Hi there new member on here, turning out to be a really useful forum!

I have a New Forest pony called Ashdene Thumper and was wondering if anyone else has got a pony related to him, along the ashdene, monkshorn, burton starlight roots?

Would love to see some pics if you do, i have never met another pony closely related to him. He's 17 years old and 13.3hh

Charlsxx: Freddie's passport name is ashdene thumper and he has monkshorn blood on his dam's side being: monkshorn black beauty and monkshorn black bess, maybe their related?

Freddie also has prescott philip, setley springtime and burton starlight blood in him. happy.gif

Ashdene Ponies

Hello again, Poppets dam was Ashdene Phoebe, I don't
know if she was related to your pony, maybe someone on
this site will know? What is your ponies temperament like,
Poppet was a dream, so easy to handle. I still own a
Forester, she is by Buckland Dragonslayer and she also is
very easy going.

Re: New Member & Ashdene/Monkshorn bloodlines?

Freddie has the best temperment ever, he is very quite and lets me do anything with him. We bought him from the pony sales a year ago. He went through the sales once and nobody bought him because he had a reputation in this area for being a very difficult & dangerous pony. He then went through the sales again in the afternoon and a meat man bought him and so freddie as destined for the lions at longleat. The meat man was really nice and let us buy freddie off him before he went to the lions. When freddie arrived at our yard he was a nervous wreck, but thanks to a year's hard work and help from Sarah Simmons teaching me parelli/natural horsemanship he is now the perfect, calm first pony he is to me. I am now riding out on the forest bareback and jumping what we can! We did a few shows this summer and qualified for Royal London show, which i am so proud of him for because he has come on such a long way this year and now even my parents trust me to ride him out on the forest on my own. I think this honest, calm temperment is passed through all ashdene ponies and will deffinatly be buying a close relative to Freddie when im older. The breeder of the ashdene breedline only live's round the corner from me! I see him at the drift with the other ponies he runs on the forest.

Ah, I know who Freddie is now! I knew him very well in his past home and am so glad he's fallen on his hooves with you guys - and a new name for a fresh start is a great idea! happy.gif I saw you qualify him for RL at Cadnam back in the summer and you looked to be getting on well with him - already looking like a 'new' pony. I was horrified to hear how close he came to meeting his end, and so thrilled AJ gave him the chance of a new life. Good luck and I hope you and he have many happy years of hacking and having fun! happy.gif

Wow, it's nice to meet someone who knew him before we had him. How did you know him? I used to ride him in 2006 for his previous owner and competed him in shows. Then this time last year he suddenley came back into my life! happy.gif As soon as we got him we looked through his passport and picked a new name for him, Freddie - because his dad was Pilley Hill Fred. He's had every aspect of his life changed to help him forget about the past, his name, colour of tack, routine - which is the most important for him as his best friend is food! I know AJ very well, i helped her with her other horses all last year and now go down there after school and at weekends to ride freddie and look after her other ponies. I have Freddie on full loan off her, she lives just around the corner from me. When i see her today i will tell her that im in contact with you Tina. Would love to hear any stories/experiences with freddie before we got him. happy.gif

If you'd like to fill in Freddie's grandparents names on allbreedspedigree: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/ashdene+thumper then we can see if our ponies are related. I have 2 ponies with Monkshorn breeding.

My 5 year old Glenbeech Tibby is descended from Monkshorn Black Beauty, Monkshorn Rocket, Monkshorn Favour, Frank of Crabbswood, Goodenough, Burton Starlight. She also has an Ashdene pony way back - Strawberry of Ashdene - but not related.

My 2 year old Rowdown Luna has Monkshorn Rocket and Goodenough.

My foal Oakapple Daisy Mae is a great great great granddaughter of Prescott Philip. She also has Frank of Crabbswood, Burton Starlight and Goodenough.

They're all related somewhere if you go back far enough!

I was thinking Ashdene Thumper - I know that name, how do I know it? Now I have remembered, thanks to a bit of a literal prod from Tina above, I wish you all the best with him, and so far you seem to be doing really well together. I was at Beaulieu Road last year when he went through the ring...

wow, its nice to meet someone who was there when he was sold. i have one picture of when he went through the sales - makes me very upset to think such a brilliant pony was destined for meat sad.gif
He went throught the sales twice that day, first time round he didn't meet his reserve price and the second time he was sold to a meat man but then Alison Jeffries bought him off the meat man and i now fully loan him off her. I would have loved to have been at the sales when he went through, but unfortuantly i was at school sad.gif

Judy & Amylou91:
Great to hear that you both have ponies related to me - i will deffinatly be buying an ashdene pony when im older. happy.gif
Amylou91: your mare is lovely, i've always wanted a dun pony! How did you manage to put a photo on their because i can't seem to do it - i know i did it at the very beginning of this thread but it won't let me do it again sad.gif

Re: New Member & Ashdene/Monkshorn bloodlines?

Hiya,

I don't want to go into too much detail on a public forum, its not fair - lets just say Freddie had a very different life before and he and his previous owner didn't always seem to see eye-to-eye. He was perhaps 'misunderstood' and thus acquired the reputation for being difficult: with the farrier, clipping, loading, under saddle...

He was also aimed at fairly high level (county standard) showing and unfortunately, sweet chap though he is, his confirmation and performance didn't really match his owners ambitions which perhaps led to frustrations on both sides.

I'm very pleased he's landed in a home where he is loved and valued for himself and not what he can win - and I'm sure he is happier for having less pressure, and ironically will probably perform better as a result, as you found when you showed him succesfully happy.gif

Ahhhh, I hadnt noticed this thread.............I too know Ashdene Thumper and also knew him by different name...............my daughter (who was 11 at the time) rode him for a short while for his previous owner, who had a bad back, about 6 1/2 years ago and he was an absolute poppet for her and never did a thing wrong..........very well mannered and respectful if he liked you happy.gif I also used to feed him when i fed mine and yes, he loves his grub and always was a good doer wink.gif
Am really glad he has landed on his feet and has a caring owner who loves him for who he is and not who she wants him to be happy.gif It broke my hear to see him go through to sales and I am so pleased it all had a happy ending happy.gif
Would love to see some pics of him happy.gif

Re: New Member & Ashdene/Monkshorn bloodlines?

Wow it seems like a lot of people round here know who Freddie is. Yes he was called Wizzy before we got him - but thought that this name suggested he was 'wizzy' which he isn't and we also wanted to start him over again so choosing a new name seeemed like a good idea. I met Wizzy about 3 years ago, i was 12, when i started riding for the previous owner, he was already a bit 'fragile' then, after a year of riding him the woman decided that he was too dangerous - although he had never done anything with me on him! He kept appearing in my life there after but i too, was horrified to hear he had gone to the sales - !?!?!?
Did your daughter enjoy riding him? What type of activities did she do - i'm hoping to start a bit a jumping and hunting on him, the previous owner rufused to jump him, but he can jump perfectly! Would love to see some photo's of Wizzy before! Freddie is now 17 going on 35 - he's such an old man - never ever put'S a foot wrong! [linked image] [linked image] [linked image]
