Hi, i was just wondering if anyone else has this problem with their young ponys, mine was 3 im may, when i bring him in to take in the school for some work he really click on one of his back legs or maybe both back legs im not sure, a lady said to me its normal for young horses to click and maybe i should give him a little oil to help supple his joints, im a little worried now as some one else said today that maybe i should get he vet out, he is sound and it doesnt seem to bother him.

Just after some suggestions really.

My forester also has this. He was 3 in June and his back joints click. I have been giving him cod liver oil and this seems to help.

Not sure about clicking joints but i used to have a young horse who sufferd from a locking stifle, now that was really scary, first time it happened i thought she had a broken leg, would literally drag it along behind her, after about five minutes it would unlock itself and she would be fine! By the time she was about three and a half it had stopped happening, it's apparently not that uncommon in young horses, so maybe the clicking thing is just something similar?
Cod liver oil won't heat him up at all, any oil is a slow release energy source and shouldn't cause any adverse side affects at all, hope that helps happy.gif

Hi, my 9 yr old forester suffers from sticky/locking stifle which clicks he is sound & it doesnt bother him but the vets advice was to watch his weight & work & work him which does seem to pretty much cure it. I do know it is alot more common in youngsters & they should grow out of it, I wouldnt worry about your boy if he seems happy & sound then keep the work steady but regular & im sure it will improve.

I did once hear someone say clicking joints is a symptom of clacium deficiency. She was a very old, slightly (very!) dotty lady, so I dont know if this holds any truth.
