Do the New Forest stud barns have organised visits to the area to view ponies?
We will soon be looking for a broke pony for my older daughter to attend the local Pony Club as she is quite competitive.
Any suggestions as to where to look would be appreciated. She would like a very good allrounder as we recently also saw some hunter jumper classes which she would like to enter. And she enjoys dressage.
A registered New Forest would be our preference as we know the breed is very versatile.

Thats the problem - we are trying to find out how to see
top-class ponies from the best studs or private owners with proven ponies, all in one or two visits, as we are not based in the area. The girls are at school and are involved in many other activities also.
Obviously not done this way in the UK.
We have quite a few Welsh pony studs near us - but we really would
have preferred a New Forest pony to join our other two. We are now being assisted by the Dressage group in our area - but sadly, no New Forests.
Just appears to be difficult to find a New Forest for our very talented daughter.

farriers stud/wayland stud or haywards stud
they all do alot of dressage as well as doing well in the show ring
i have a farriers pony and he has fantastic movement.
There's a nice looking 5 year old gelding on the Forest Bred Offered list - he looks like he's had a good start to his ridden career.

Forest bred ponies also do well in competition. Foresters do extremely well in both dressage and jumping. I suggest that you try contacting the New Forest Pony Enthusiasts Club through their link on this site. They may well know of proven performance ponies that their owners are thinking of selling on. A lot of people still like to move on to horses as they get a bit older, although on this site you will find many adult enthusiasts for the forest breed - me included. If you are thinking of bringing on a youngster for the future the prices for colts this year selling through Beaulieu Road sales is severely depressed and some breeders may be selling privately (and inexpensively)to ensure that the boys get a fair chance at life. Or arrange your visits down here on sale days, the next Beaulieu Road sale with a foal show is on Thursday 1 October. Forest bred foals may not look good just after coming off their mums but on good grazing and properly done they grow into superb ponies (we have 2 that we love to bits. So much heart, fast as you would want and with stunning height to size jumping ability). so have a think about picking up a colt as well as a riding pony!

Just been looking through sites - Suzanne Kempe has email address on home page of NFPEC. Also go through the NF Pony publicity group home site to their Forest bred ponies for sale list - some corkers on there!! Contact owners to try and arrange a viewing day (publicity group might be up for helping with this) also many of them will be able to email you video footage of their stock to help you make a short list.
You sound as though you have a USA background. Where in this country are you based? THe New Forest Pony Publicity Group will have a stand at the Horse of the Year Show and 'Your Horse Live' with lots of stud and Forest bred info.

Canada not U.S. Big difference altho both North America. Most of our family are in the UK.
Thanks to all for the suggestions. Unfortunately, we have not seen anything yet in the ads that seem to suit our requirements. Will have to be very experienced as daughters ages will not permit time to bring on youngsters.
Thanks again - have been reading through many posts on here and forums do seem to be fun. We are on the Horse and Hound forum also and learning a lot about the UK way of doing things around horses.
I am sure we will find something over the winter.

My daughter and I started our first forest baby when she (daughter) was 14. So now at almost 19(the daughter) the pony(5) is starting to muscle up and begin to work at higher levels. so don't be frightened of starting a baby as well as finding your schoolmaster. for me it has been the most exciting process having only ever ridden other peoples ponies to go to buying a five month foal off the forest (followed 3 months later) with a gelding rising 3 off the forest 4 months later. I don't regret a single minute of it and I know these ponies inside out instead of having to try and work out what may have set up a pattern of behaviour in the past. The foals and daughters grow up together - very cool!! also this is the time of year when the depastured forest bred foals are brought in from the Forest and sold, hence so mnay babies. In a couple of months the for sale lists will contract dramatically. We bought our boy in February when only 2 young boys were available!! Over here autumn is the main trading time for people to buy and sell, with a flutter in the spring. good luck.

Unfortunately, we already have inherited two NFs who are reasonable allrounders.
My daughter was in the teams in Canada and we urgently need a really good 14.2 team standard pony now.
Obviously, we just do not know the 'right' people to find a suitable New Forest, so we are going to have to widen our search.
Thanks for all the advice.

Have you tried the New forest pony breed society website there are some competitive ponies advertised there.
There are also some on the horsequest website - but for a proven competitive pony you will be expected to pay ££££ and you might have to travel as well.

There's also studs listed on the breed society website. I've contacted a few of them recently asking to visit to view prospective "husbands" for my mare, and they've all been really helpful.

Problem solved short term. Have an awesome loan for six months - but they want him back for the summer. Gives us time to look around and he is very successful in the Pony Club world and they have already been asked to be on the team.
My younger daughter is happy to play around with the other two and we can now all go out trail riding together.
We will start looking again in the spring - money is not a problem for the right pony. We have a second daughter to come onto a larger pony, so it will be worth its weight in gold if we find the right one.
Thanks everyone - will keep reading this and glean whatever we can about the New Forest world.
