Frequent question. Although it really doesn't matter and is not relevant to what follows in the movie, but here are my thoughts:
When the mother said that Maggie lost, I saw it as what she saw in her daughter. Her mother tried to tell her to become something else, but now that she is paralyzed, she lost. Lost in the game of life. Maggie's life was never what most girls grow up wanting and it was not what her mother wanted.
However, what probably actually happened is that the other fighter was dq'd for the illegal blow. But it really doesn't matter to Maggie does it?
