The phrase "Mo Cuishle" loosely translates to "pulse of my heart" or "My darling".
Personally, I don't think that she was his real daughter, but rather he was needing her as a psychological replacement for his biological daughter who had disowned him. He wanted to be more of a father figure to her than her real father.
She grew-up with her biological father. He died when she was a teen. She was very close with him as she grew-up.
Also, it would mean that he and Maggie's mother would know each other. There was no indication or recognition that they knew each other.
