I've been meaning to ask about this. Would you mind giving us a run down of how you get listed on search engines? And which one's the site will most likely be listed on?
There are entire websites (and no doubt books) devoted to the subject of how to get listed on the web. I'm a rank amateur but here are a few tidbits that I picked up recently.
The big difference one the web in this regard is the difference between a true "search engine" (which actually scours the web for new sites, eg. Google) and "directories" in which someone simply adds the address of a website to their list (sometimes for a hefty fee). Most sites that "search the web", are actually simply searching their own, in-house list. Google is an exception.
Here's what's happened with this site so far:
Each of our forums is listed (with a description) on Network54's directory. As James mentioned somewhere else, if you search Network54's directory for terms like "affair", "infidelity", "extramarital affair", "cheating" etc., our forums will show up.
This site has also been registered with Yahoo but "free registration" takes 8 months before Yahoo will even look at the application.
The site has also been registered with the "Open Directory Project". It shows up in their listings already. www.dmoz.org. This is a truly global directory operated by volunteers.
Google's "web crawler" is picking up our site now, probably because of the listings on Network54 but maybe also on the Open Directory Project.
I suspect that it will just take some time for true "search engines" like Google to pick us up but there remains a need to investigate what more could be done to increase the visibility of the site. There are other "search engines" (I think they are actually directories) like Lycos, AltaVista, and Infoseek - I've looked into a couple of'm but didn't get very far. I'm not sure why. Most of them seem to use the "Open Directory Project" as a way of adding non-commercial listings to their sites.
Businesses that want to increase their visibility have other options. Of course, there are always other options if you have plenty of money. Some websites do nothing else but find ways of getting YOUR website noticed (for a fee of course). I'm not convinced that if we spent a coupla thousand bucks, it would make much difference to the traffic here though. But if anyone has that kinda cash lying around, it might be worth a shot.
