Forum problems

A couple of problems have been reported on Network54 (the company that hosts our forums) recently:

1. Posts are inexplicably deleted, forums cannot be accessed, the order of posts in a thread are rearranged, etc. Apparently one of the Network54 servers has been acting up. Network54 support advises that "the problem with the server should be corrected shortly" (translated, that usually means that the problem will be solved shortly but based on prior experience there is an outside chance that the problem will persist for a week or two). If some of posts on our forums disappear, it is likely due to the known problem with the server. Moderators do not delete posts without explanation.

2. Some members have received emails from network54 asking them to "verify" their email address and/or passwords. If you receive such an email, my suggestion is to simply follow the instructions. If you run into problems, Network54 advises:

**************

Two points here:

1. Make sure you a logged into the account you are attempting to verify prior to clicking on the verification email.

2. Make sure that the link is not split by your email program. For example, if there are numbers and/or letters following the link that make no other sense than if they are part of the link, they are. You will need to reunite them and paste it into a browser window.

**************

Please post here to report any other problems with the forums and/or Network54

One of my posts was deleted. I can't remember what thread it was on or what the date was or what it said, but could you get it back for me?

you two

August 4 2005, 3:45 PM

If you two don't cut this shenanigans out immediately I will (a) go AWOL for a couple of months or (b) hold my breath until I turn blue.

You wouldn't want that to happen now would you?

Well?

Would you?

(On second thought, don't answer that).

I'd like to see you turn ochre with purple spots.

Don't blame me, blame GT, or the sun. It's gonna be 97 degrees here. All the banana slugs have shriveled up.

AWOL - Absent Without Leggings?

What shade of blue? Some shades of blue are really attractive on a man.

What IS a banana slug? Have you been hitting the watermelon wine again?

Shades of Blue

August 4 2005, 8:41 PM

What does ochre (the color, not the vegetable) look like? Is it anything like burnt umber?

>>What shade of blue?<<

Blue Meanie shade of blue. I know, I know. You and MM are waaay too young to remember the Blue Meanies. Suffice it to say that they were a group of senile delinquents who were very, very blue.

(Didn't Miles Davis record an album called Shades of Blue? If he didn't, he should have.)

forum problems - new ISP

August 13 2005, 2:32 AM

From: Steven Roussey   (Premier Login sroussey)
Network54 Employee
On Network54 Admin Help Forum

Last week we changed ISPs. It went well. For a while we were running on both ISPs. In a sense, we still are. But the new one has bad problems with the routing tables setup across to other ISPs as I understand it. Yesterday and today. The new ISP is much faster has very low latency. However, if it continues to have problems we will revert back or find another.

So far, I have only talked to the support department. I have not talked to their boss yet -- but I will.

Adding salt to the wound, I think Chris thought it was one of the webservers I was reconfiguring yesterday and he restarted it (though I put it down for a reason...) late last night. That just caused more problems, and masked the real culprit.

N54/Steven Roussey/My Weblog

Update: It seems that some of the time people were still being directed to the down server, and that was my fault. I just don't get how it happened, but it did. We think it may have been one of our 'health' scripts that tries to fix broken servers automagically. Did the opposite. On the plus side, some people never noticed! Another server decided who went to which server and it has its preferences. Of course, it really should have noticed that the downed server wasn't working right, so I'm looking at that now...

posts disappearing?

August 13 2005, 2:36 AM

On Affair Recovery and Discovery, people continue to report that some of their posts have gone missing, for no apparent reason. I'm guessing it has something to do with the problems (above) associated with changeover to the new ISP.

Network54 staff is aware of technical problems. Hopefully they will be solved soon.

logging on

August 26 2005, 11:02 AM

Apparently, Network54 is continuing to have problems with one of their servers. Difficulty logging on to Network54 is one of the symptoms but I gather there are others. Tech support continues to reassure people that some hardware will be replaced and that the problem should be fixed "soon".

You know the same thing happened to me. My whole thread got eaten and it took me 5 hours to write the first post. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure it was on R & D. Can this be fixed?

Hey, I'll bet Donny looks good in blue and I'm surprised no one else pointed this out yet.

>>My whole thread got eaten and it took me 5 hours to write the first post. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure it was on R & D. Can this be fixed?<<

What? A whole thread disappeared?

As far as I know, there is no way to recover a post if it disappears in the middle or writing it. The problem is that the forum doesn't allow us to save the post while we are writing it. The only solution (AFAIK) is to write long posts using a text editor (such as Windows Notepad, Windows WordPad, or Microsoft Word) and then copy and paste it into the box on the forum in your web browser. Save often.

>>Any reports on problems with Network 54 again?<<

A couple of posters are complaining about various kinds of weird behavior on their forums. So far, the tech support people have responded by saying that they are being told by the other (main?) tech support people that the problem with the server was temporary and has been solved. Still, this afternoon I've had some problems logging in, posting, etc.

Well I am certainly noticing some problems. A new post is showing up on the Home Page but doesn't show up when you go to that particular forum to view it. I've had a few posts just flat disappear. Maybe it's someone up there trying to tell me something.

Charlie

I'm lost, what does Donny looking good in blue have to do with any of this?  BTW, Donny looks good in anything.

Yes, there is a capacity issue. A new server goes in tomorrow that should relieve the problem, and another that arrives in two weeks as a cushion. There won't be any downtime, it will just suddently get better.

That total made me laugh. LOL I don't ever write 5 hour posts and was only joking about the thread disappearing.

I'm just being a pest!

November 5 2005, 11:53 PM

... I quit .... as forum administrator. No more forum problems for me. To paraphrase Richard Nixon, they won't have old Quinn to kick around anymore. It's been fun. I've enjoyed helping to set up this site. I plan to keep posting but it's time to move on to another project. Chris has agreed to take over. Thanks, Chris and many thanks to the team of moderators and administrators for getting this board up off the ground. The pay may not be that great but the rewards are many.

Problem with home page appearing in very tiny font and I am not able to access Chat, it says I need a system 4 browser. Hmmmm. The rest of everything appears fine, just slow.

Judy

Now I see some posts of mine are removed. Crazy stuff in cyber space?.

I just saw your quitting post. How did I miss that post?

Thanks for all your hard work. There wouldn't have been a site had it not been for you. You've made a difference in lots of lives by providing this space for folks to come and get help.

I won't get all sappy on you but I want you to know I'm proud of you. You're a good guy.

Chris is taking over, huh? Does that mean this will now be a "thinking" forum instead of a "feeling one?
