Brush with fame

June 26 2005 at 4:39 PM
Sandy  (Login sandy6957)

Following on from Kath's "I'm bored - 20 questions" thread. Has anyone met a famous person? How famous? What happened?
I'll start:
In 1963, when I was 6 (no, really - for those that saw my photo!) my sister was on TV in Canberra - which is the capital of Australia!!! She started off doing news and weather, and then she had her own programme - a children's programme, which I can't remember the name of (I was only 6!!) but anyway, I went on it one time! I was the guest of honour!! ME!! She had about 10 kids on the show (live) every day, who sat on the floor in front of her, but I got to sit next to her (you have to know that she's 20 years older than me!) and get cuddled. Well, 6 year old Sandy was a bit of a tomboy - so I'm really gonna want to get cuddled by my big sister live on TV - NOT!! She had her arm round me while she introduced me, and I was whispering to her "stop cuddling me, get off!" of course, I didn't realise that every word I said was being picked up by microphones (!!!) Then they brought on a box of puppies from the local kennels for the other kids to play with - and Sandy's gone!! Off to play with the puppies. I always have loved dogs......
And that's all I can remember about my claim to fame!

Well, I admit to being older than 6 in 63, so in some year after that, when John Denver was my idol, and I was living in North Dakota, and married, and bored, in January in North Dakota (you get the idea), my H and I accompanied another couple to see a JD concert (nope, didn't meet him...darn) in Bismarck. The interesting part is that we FLEW in a 4-seater plane and it was 24 degrees (F, honest) below zero, and we only had a snow runway for take-off and landing from our home town of 2,000.

After the concert we did not know if the plane would start or not, but JD was with us in spirit and it did start, hesitantly, but the windows were all frozen over. We made it back ok, singing JD's songs all the while and the pilot kept scraping a peep-hole in the frost to fly by. And the sky overhead was dancing with a million stars. Never have I felt more spiritual.

I suppose I should mention that the pilot had only one eye.

Since then JD has been my spirit guide.

This is good! I have never (knowingly) been in a plane when the pilot had only one eye, sorry Cory, but it is a bit scary, huh?
I was, however, in a little plane once in Belize, when the luggage was too heavy, and the pilot got us all to move the luggage forward because the tail of the plane was resting on the runway. We moved all the luggage (you guessed it, we weren't exactly first class!!) but the tail was still resting on the tarmac, but this wasn't a problem! The pilot just got a few guys from the airfield to lift the tail and run with it until he got up enough speed....... fine, I think. Until we're up in the sky. Then I start wondering who's gonna catch it when we land??? Landing was even funnier. There was a sleeping dog (I swear to God this is the truth) on the runway, so the pilot didn't want to hurt the dog, no worries: he just landed it on a bit of grass next to the runway.
And she lived to tell the tale........!!!

Fame ?

June 26 2005, 6:09 PM

Well just brushes really but not sure if any of these really count:>)

Well I hung out with the Brooks and Dunn band and Trick Pony one night in a restricted area in a bar around here after their concert. I didn't really talk to Brooks and Dunn but was leaning up against the two back to back for a bit - in hindsight, I should have talked to them. LOL I met all the band members of Trick Pony (if any of you know who they are) and hung out with them for a bit in their big motorhome/moving house or whateveryacallit. Their manager (and Kenney Chesney's manager) is married piece of crap who could not leave any of us 3 gals alone even though he knew we were all married (at the time anyway). Damn, I could have had back stage passes to Kenny too ugh!

Many years ago I was in line at a little Jewish eatery in Los Angeles and was in line and behind me walked up Nicholas Cage (skinny) and Charlie Sheen (he's short). They were standing in line behind me. Of course I didn't say a word and they got in before me. LOL

I talked to one of the Andretti's (Mario? can't remember which? or his son) when I was working for a catering company in CA and we catered the Laguna Seca races.

Met the fiddle player in Brad Paisley's band a few years ago - nice guy.

Does having dinner with the Mayer of Ft. Lauderdale a couple years ago count?

How about being in Marcus Allen's condo in Brentwood, CA years ago? He wasn't there though. Had some real nice cars in the garage though.

I lead an exciting life, ha ha

Pretty good!

But, can anyone beat my having dinner with Princess Diana? Kensington Palace was so beautiful, but not a patch on the Princess, of course. She was witty, attentive and great fun.
By the way - this is a lie. I wish I'd met her, but I never did!!
xxxx
Edit to add: Night night, I'm off to bed. Look forward to reading your fame claims tomorrow xxx

Never....

June 26 2005, 8:30 PM

Never met anyone famous. But in true Canadian fashion I have SEEN or been near to alot of famous people but never went up to them to ask for an autograph or anything for fear of "bothering them". I guess that's why celebs like Toronto so much.

Mostly I've seen famous people at events, on airplanes, in the airport or in trendy restaurants.

In airplanes and airports its been either sports figures like hockey players (the goalie for our beloved Maple Leafs was sitting in the Montreal airport just a few weeks ago waiting for the same plane I was on) or its been politicians. I won't bore you with names you don't know but its been alot of MP's or such the most famous of whom was Joe Clark who was a former prime minister (a very brief one who got kicked out of a minority government).

The coolest guy I saw but didn't meet in a restaurant was a very, very handsome John Stamos. Don't know if many people outside North America would know of him but he's quite good looking and in person even more so. Couldn't help but keep glancing at him as I ate dinner with some friends. My HINO actually met Robert DeNiro and Chazz Palmienteri who were in Toronto once for the Toronto Film Festival. HINO and friends were eating out really late one night in Greektown and DeNiro and pals were at a table nearby. HINO introduced himself.

But then again HINO having been a bartender for alot of years and recently having done a stint as a limo driver has met alot of famous people. He drove Aerosmith around for a day. He got to watch their concert from backstage. He also spent a whole day chauffeuring a famous actor who's name now escapes me including picking up Shania Twain for a business lunch with him. He said Shania Twain was pretty and gracious and very tiny...

HINO also did a stint as a stuntman and film extra and got to meet the likes of Burt Reynolds during a filming--just one of HINO's many numerous occupations...

I've met quite a few people in the world of metal. Years ago, I had a friend who worked for a small, now-defunct metal magazine. I accompanied her to some shows, carried her camera equipment, got to sit in on the interviews, etc. Anyways, here's the list...

Bruce Dickinson, lead singer from Iron Maiden

Don Dokken (singer) & George Lynch (guitarist), Dokken

Frankie Banali (drummer) & Kevin Dubrow (singer), Quiet Riot

Metallica, before they were huge, about 2 months before their original bassist, Cliff Burton, died in the bus crash.

The one and only, the legend, Ozzy

I also met and partied with two people in martial arts who went on to become semi-famous. It was back in 1982, at the after tournament party for the J. Parks East Coast Nationals. I partied with Cynthia Rothrock and Billy Blanks.

And one of the highlights of my life: I had dinner with Buffalo Bob!

Sandy: Great story about the dog on the runway!!!

A few years ago I was doing some trail work in Colorado and the brother-in-law to Tommy Hilfiger was on my crew. I would have never known except that he wore these really swell clothes to do trail work and the rest of us looked like hobos. I remarked on his nice clothes and he told me he got all of them free from Tommy.

I have some writer friends who are pretty famous. Peter Leschek (Nat Geog), Jim-dale Vickery (Backpacker mag), Mary Blocksma (check her website, she is also a breast cancer survivor). Nice folks, all.

Well as I was coming out of the washroom at the Daytona 500 I ran smack dab into John Travolta. He was looking for the restroom and I pointed the way. He asked me how I was liking the race and I responded it was great. We chit chatted for another couple seconds and off he went. It wasn't till I got back to my seat that I thought hey this guy looks familiar. Sure enough I realized that it was him!! He was the grand marshal that year.

If any of you know who Honeymoon Suite is...........when I was 17 I went back to their hotel room and partied so I met all of them.

I met and shook hands with Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Hmmmm yep not bad for a small town girl from Canada

Re: Brush with fame

June 27 2005, 1:47 PM

Where do I start, lol. Growing up in So. Calif. I have actually seen and met a few celebrities and I have seen many films being made on location.

HITS:
One year at the Hollywood Christmas parade (before the baracades) I met Leif Garret and Robby Benson, who were big teens stars at the time. They were both really nice. I saw an episode of CHiP's being filmed and met most of the cast, including Erik Estrada & Larry Wilson (Ponch & Jon). The entire cast was very friendly, and joked around with each other a lot. A few years ago I went back to So. Calif. for a vacation and I met Dennis Rodman at a shoe store in Huntington Beach. He was not very friendly and wouldnt even speak to us, but his girlfriend got him to pose for a picture with my sister and the kids. And I met Larry King, along with his wife and two little boys at LegoLand. My youngest son actually played with them in line for a couple of minutes. They were really nice and seemed like a pretty normal family. I live near the Nazareth Speedway and I met Mario Andretti (He used to live in Nazareth, but moved to No. Calif.. He was a guest speaker at my sister-in-laws college graduation. I also saw (not met) Joe Pesci at JFK airport. We were getting on the same plane to Italy. So he was on the plane, we got off in Paris to switch planes, and I was right behind him (he is very short). He was with his mom! I didnt have the nerve to bother him, but I did take a picture of him from afar, lol. Anyway, he got on a plane going to Milan from there and we were going to Naples.

AND MISSES:
They also filmed parts of the "Karate Kid" at the arcade near my house, parts of "Grease" at a local high school, parts of "Corvette Summer" at a local car wash, and parts of the TV show "Square Pegs" (Sarah Jessica Parker) at the same high school, but I didnt meet any of the stars. I do have a friend who was in the Drama Club at school and he was used as an extra in "High School USA" and met Michael J. Fox.

That's all I can think of at the moment, LOL.
Carol~

Re: Brush with fame

June 27 2005, 2:35 PM

These aren't my brushes with fame, but a couple of friends of mine.

I have a friend who lives in Pacific Palisades Ca. She helped produce Barbra Streisand's world tour several years ago. She travelled all over the world with Babs. She also worked for Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond and too many others to count. She also helped prodcue the Presidential innauguration for Bill Clinton several years ago. I love to hear her stories.

Her second husband had an affair. My girlfriend went to the house and took all his clothes and threw them all over the front yard from a second story balcony. His clothes were all over the trees, shrubs and drive-way. Then she released the emergency brake from his red Jag and let it roll into the pool.

I told her she should produce a story about that.

A family member of mine who thinks he is a big-shot Republican, donates $$$), so he gets invited to some innaugurations. He dated my girlfriend who is a die-hard Irish Catholic DEMOCRAT.

It's rather ironic to see the photo of her with this fam member and a few Republican presidents and their wives. My girlfriend hides the picture from her brother.

I'm going to see the Rolling Stones Nov. 1st. I'm going to make a sign and walk in front of the stage-

"Mick, I'm available, and I'm ONLY 51 years old!"

Are we all impressive!!

June 27 2005, 3:02 PM

First of all, Jane in the sky! - so your HINO has met Shania Twain? That don't impress me much!!!!!.......
Actually, I am impressed, cos I just love dancing to her music!
A couple more from me, you may not have heard of, so I'll just list them:

Dessie (Desert Orchid) the racehorse
Red Rum the racehorse - I walked him down the street
Trevor Brooking - soccer
Glenn Hoddle - soccer
Franki Dettori - jockey
Laura Davies - golf
Touched the Queen's car (THE Queen, not Freddie Mercury)
Was in the crowd at royal weddings: Charles and Diana and Andrew and Fergie.
Got a letter back from Fergie after I wrote to her when Diana died.
Tears for Fears singer, Roland Orzabal - in my taxi

That's all I can think of!

Um.

Roseann Cash. Johnny Cash was a few feet away. Big man. Booming voice.

The Eagles Band. They got me in trouble at my job. Poop heads.

John F Kennedy waved at me and my friend Debbie when I was around 7 or 8. He was in a convertable in a local parade. We held a sign that said, "Say HI to Caroline". He liked that.

I met Grace Slick about 3 years ago.

Ram Dass gave me a hug once.

Lynn Andrews. She signed her book.

Jim Brandenburg--famous photographer for National Geographic.

Jessica Lang's sister.

MM, Kid, H2c, Night Mary, Chris, Cory, Quinn, Jbean, and Kat.

Re: Brush with fame

June 27 2005, 6:28 PM

Does anyone want to guess which celebrity I've met the most?

I've met Donny in person a few times now. The first was on the talk show he and Marie had a few years back.  They both came up to the audience after the taping was finished. We have a video of the show and you can see Donny talking to us and giving me a hug as the credits are rolling. We also got to talk to Marie that day. They are just as you would imagine they would be, very nice and down to earth. Donny is very handsome in person and looks much younger than he is. Marie is very pretty and smaller than she looks on screen.

I laugh about that particular meeting because my husband mentioned (before the show) that he didn't want me to embarrass him if Donny came up to us. I was quite composed and calm, but my husband couldn't get two straight sentences out of his mouth to save his life. He'll never live that one down. LOL

Another time I had a backstage pass and the whole family got to meet Donny after a Christmas concert. We were the last one's there and he talked with us for quite some time. Again, he was very down to earth and has quite a sense of humor.

Anyone remember Ray Stevens and the song The Streak? Several years back when our children were small we were eating breakfast at a restaurant and he walked in and sat at the booth behind us. He started making goofy faces at our son which led to a conversation with us. He was very funny, and a very nice man.

I recently met Bart/Quinn, H2C and his wife NM from the boards. That meant as much (or more) to me as meeting Donny.

GT

Edited to add: A few weeks back I was busy doing household chores and my cell phone rang. It was Cory. He's not a celebrity, but he should have been. He has this beautiful "radio voice" and could have chosen that as a career. Made my day.

Edited this time for typos and to let Tex know I was thinking of him.

There's not gonna be any Bart/Quinn, H2C, or NM shrines or scrap books added to the house is there?

All kidding aside, meeting you and H was way more important than the hug that Louise Mandrel gave me even after I warned her that I had a bad cold. She said "Oh Honey, come here."

Nope, never been streaking.  At least not out in public.

However, I once talked my husband into going skinny dipping out in a lake. It was dark and we were at a  pretty secluded spot. It took me forever to convince him that no one would be out that late at night. We hadn't been in the water more than 5 minutes when the park rangers drove up and started shining these huge spotlights over the water where we were. My husband was not happy with me.  LOL

Re: Brush with fame

June 29 2005, 9:56 AM

This seems a really good time to post these lyrics.

"The Stranger", Billy Joel

Well, we all have a face that we hide away forever
And we take them out and show ourselves when everyone has gone.
Some are satin, some are steel,
Some are silk and some are leather.
They're the faces of a stranger,
But we'd love to try them on.

Well, we all fall in love,
But we disregard the danger,
Though we share so many secrets,
There are some we never tell.
Why were you so surprised that you never saw the stranger?
Did you ever let your lover see the stranger in yourself?

Don't be afraid to try again.
Everyone goes south every now and then.
You've done it.
Why can't someone else?
You should know by now.
You've been there yourself.

Once I used to believe I was such a great romancer.
Then I came home to a woman that I could not recognize.
When I pressed her for a reason,
She refused to even answer.
It was then I felt the stranger kick me right between the eyes.

Well, we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised that you never saw the stranger
Did you ever let your lover see the stranger in yourself.

Don't be afraid to try again.
Everyone goes south every now and then.
You've done it.
Why can't someone else?
You should know by now.
You've been there yourself.

You may never understand how the stranger is inspired.
But he isn't always evil and he is not always wrong.
Though you drown in good intentions,
You will never quench the fire.
You'll give in to your desire when the stranger comes along.

Streaking

June 29 2005, 11:51 AM

GT,

> That song came out when I was in Jr. High and
> streaking was a big deal in our small town.

I was probably 9 to 11 years old at the time. I remember sitting in McDonalds in our town one day and a whole group of "streakers" came running through the McDonalds. My formative years, and I thought it was kind of cool...

> Anyone ever go streaking?

I've never gone streaking, but my wife and I spent a lot of time at nude beaches and "clothing optional" hot springs when we were first married. It's great to get an all over tan, and feel the fresh air on our skin. Sure beats a wet and sandy swim suit stuck to your body...

The first time we got nude in public, I was really worried that "nature" would rise to the occasion and embarass me big time. But, it's amazing how quickly you forget that everyone around you is naked. Besides, most of the folks at nude beaches are far from playmates and GQ.

> I once talked my husband into going skinny
> dipping out in a lake.

Sounds like fun! I miss having the time and opportunity to do those things...

mooning in Stillwater

June 29 2005, 11:56 AM

I was 17, my girlfriend was 18. We were driving in the afternoon. A blue van full of 'dudes' passed us on the highway. Two of them mooned us as they
s l o w l y passed, by sticking EVERYTHING out the windows. There was loud hooting coming from the van, and we both said something like, "eeewwww!".

We were on our way to my cousin's house outside of town.

We turned off the road and headed down the dirt driveway. Parked there at my cousin's house was the blue van. They were trapped. Of course my cousin didn't know that his buddies had done this, and he proceeded to introduce us to his wide-eyed friends. I felt like we already knew so much about them!

Never mooned anyone....but awhile back my son had some friends over for the night. Boys will be boys I suppose. One of them decided it would be fun to drop his pants and fart on the boy sitting behind him.  My mother in law and I opened the door to the game room just as he pulled his pants down. Being the wise women that we are, we just quietly backed out of the room and shut the door. I heard my son say......Dude, you just mooned my mother and grandmother.  LOL

I was all set to name my celebrity list and I see the thread has now changed to skinny dipping, streaking and farting on friends laps. So I'll toss aside my "B" celebrity list(sorry Linda Blair) for now.

Skinny dipping. Yup, every chance I get. Midnite moonlight swim, nice cold beer on the deck is relaxing as hell. Only problem is the skeeter bites in the ass can be...well, a pain in the ass.

The mooning and streaking I went cold turkey on as of last week. Gonna have to work on the farting thang though.

It can now be revealed...it's against the adminstrators/moderators unwritten code to lock a thread. The first one to do it would face severe sanctions, like being forced to endure a thousand huggy brackets from the others. A fate worse than death.

Amazingly enough some men can still keep it up in a cold lake long enough to use it......................my ex and I had sex twice in the water.....once at a public beach and once with my parents not far away.

As for skinny dipping.....yeppers in my early years did that many times.

Did you ever dream when you started this thread that it would veer off  to such things as skinny dipping, streaking, mooning, farting on people, men being bitten by fish or being able to "perform" in cold lakes?

I'm not sure how that all got started. I tried to keep everyone on track, I really did. Perhaps if we had a little tighter moderating around this place such things wouldn't happen.

I'd like to direct your attention about half way back up this thread to a post called "Is that you Ethel?" Let the evidence show that that is where the shameful nekkedness talk and the fishing with body parts stories started.

""""Amazingly enough some men can still keep it up in a cold lake long enough to use it""""

By long enough is that a length reference or a time reference?

Re: Brush with fame

June 30 2005, 11:58 AM

Since G.T brought us back on track now I'm a huge sci-fi/horror buff. I love to go to conventions.

If you ever find yourself in Atlanta during Labor weekend here's the place to go: http://www.dragoncon.org/ . The largest one in the states.

72 hrs of non stop mayhem and fun.

The celebrites are mainly (B) list but so what.

The nicest was definately Nichelle Nichols(original Star Trek).
Kenny Baker(R2-D2)
Peter Mayhew(Chewbacca)
Traci Lords (not sure why she was there)
Linda Blair of course. I met her again at a convention in Plano, TX.
And just a collection of other celebs from sci-fi TV shows.

Definately the scariest dude was the guy who played Jason Voorhees in a majority of the Friday the 13th flicks. He wouldn't talk or take the hockey mask off.
After alot of coaching and chants of "TAKE IT OFF" he finally removed the mask. It was scarier than anyone could imagine cause lo and behold...out popped Donny Osmond!

Running away now

I'll bet Donny never imagined that his name would be mentioned so many times on an internet affair recovery site.

Tex, your post reminded me of a movie a few years back called Galaxy Quest with Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver. It wasn't that good of a movie, but it was built around a cute concept concerning a sci-fi TV show. Sigourney's breasts were hanging out of her space suit through the entire movie, but I'd better not mention that on THIS thread.

But you did mention it on THIS thread. MODS!!!

Miss(Ms) Weaver's best scene ever was in "Alien". After everyone else is killed and she finds herself alone with the alien and she's trying to get into a flight suit.

I bet it was Donny O who played the monster in that flick too.

>>>Miss(Ms) Weaver's best scene ever was in "Alien"<<<

And I'm sure it was her "acting" that you appreciated about that scene, wasn't it?

If  Donny were to play a part in a movie he'd need to wear a mask and not talk. He can't act worth a crap. But he can sing, and even if he can't sing, he can sit there and look good.

I used to be a Kenny Rogers (almost met him one time) fan. My Dad always said.......that man can't sing worth a crap. My reply.....ah but he doesn't even have to sing, sitting there looking that good is enough.

My Mum tried to get rid of me by sticking knitting needles into 'herself' and drinking half a gallon of warm gin. I'm still here. Bad luck on them, hey? Should have said 'no' shouldn't they? This is all true, by the way, and I've no idea why it doesn't bother me. Hey? Maybe it does somewhere in my subconscious, I don't know, and I don't much care, cos it makes no difference, I'm still here. I do believe they loved me once I 'arrived', but then you love abandoned puppies, don't you, so that's not saying much. You're not so different to lots of us, Tex. Don't beat yourself up about it. My brother can get a little crude at times. That's been a running joke in my family ever since the movie Christmas Vacation came out. He never misses an opportunity to say that....or give me a hard time about Donny.

I can't blame him either Charlie. As my whole family says....most people got over their Donny obsession by the age of 12 or 13.   LOL
