"those sappy love songs...."

I'm gonna scream if I hear one more sappy love song!! Songs I USED to love...now make me wanna just curl up & die. Does anyone have any suggestions of GOOD songs that'll give me hope & not rip my heart (what's left of it...LOL!) out of my chest?? I love most all music...I always have. But now it's become an escape for me....EXCEPT when I hear those horrible songs of broken hearts and lost loves. I'm 35, so I'm a big '80's music fan (blush)...I love the "hair bands" & even today's "new rock". C'mon...give me some suggestions, y'all. I really need a lift!! Some lyrics I can really relate to right now in my "on-going anger stage" are Warrant's "I Saw Red" (a heart wrencher), Jimmy Eat World's "Kill" (my thoughts exactly), & Nickelback's "Just For"(really rocks...full of rage/hurt...just like me!! ) off their "Silver Side Up" cd.

_____________________________________________

"I Saw Red" by Warrant

Ooh, it must be magic
How inside your eyes, I see my destiny
And every time we kiss, I feel you
Breathe your love so deep inside of me
If the moon and stars should fall
They'd be easy to replace
I would lift you up to heaven
And you would take their place
(Chorus): And I saw red when I opened up the door
I saw red, my heart just spilled onto the floor
And I didn't need to see his face...
Cause I saw yours
I saw red and then I closed the door
And I don't think I'm gonna love you anymore
And every day I wake up
I thank God that you are still a part of me
We've opened up the door to it
So many people never find the key
And if the sun should ever fail to send its light
We would burn a thousand candles
And make everything alright
Chorus
I've been hurt, I've been blind
I'm not sure that I'll be fine
I never thought it would end this way
Cause I saw red when I opened up the door
I saw red, my heart just spilled onto the floor
And I didn't need to see his face
Oh, I saw yours
I saw red and then I closed the door
And I don't think I'm gonna love you anymore...

"Kill" by Jimmy Eat World

Well you're just across the street,
Looks a mile to my feet,
I wanna go to you.

Funny how I'm nervous still,
I've always been the easy kill
I guess I always will

Could it be that everything goes round by chance (Chance) Or only one way that it was always meant to be (be)
You kill me you always know the perfect thing to say, hey hey, hey hey
I know what I should do but I just can't walk away

I can picture your face well
from the bar in my hotel
I wish I could leave you
I pick up put down the phone
Like your favorite heatmiser song goes:
"It's just like being alone"

Oh god please don't tell me this has been in vain (Vain)
I need answers for what all the waiting I've done means(means)
You kill me you've got some nerve but can't face your mistakes hey hey, hey hey
I know what I should do but i just can't turn away

So go on love
Leave while there's still hope for escape
Gotta take what you can these days
There's so much ahead and so much regret

I know what you wanna say
I know but I can't help feeling differently
I loved you and I sure said it--but tell me just what has it ever meant

I can't help it baby this is who I am (am)
I'm sorry but I can't just go turn off how i feel (feel)
You kill me up you build me up but just to watch me break hey hey, hey hey
I know what I should do but I just can't walk away.

___________________________________________________

"Just For" by Nickelback

I want take his eyes out
Just for looking at you
Yes I do
I want to take his hands off
Just for touching you
Yes I do
And I want to rip his heart out
Just for hurting you
And I want to break his mind down
Yes I do
And I want to make him
Regret life since the day he met you
Yes I do
And I want to make him
Take back all that he took from you
Yes I do
And I want to rip his heart out
Just for hurting you
And I want to break his mind down
Yes I do

Re: "those sappy love songs...."

I'm a classic rock guy myself, so the 80's and 90's music I know is just recent stuff by my favorite artists and groups.

Don Henley's non-Eagles stuff really speaks to me, as does the John Mellencamp self-titled CD from 1998.

Then there's the whole "screw you" genre. Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" and "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding". Most of Pat Benatar's stuff, just because of the kickass guitar work and her incredible voice. The Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac stuff like "Landslide" and "Go Your Own Way". Billy Joel's "My Life", preferably loud enough to blow the windows out of your car or house so you can scream along with it "...I don't care any more what you say, this is MY LIFE, go ahead with your own life, leave me alone".

Who, me? An ATTYTOOOD (as we used to say in Philly)?

And of course, there's the song that should have been the anthem of my generation, the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want".

Chris.

Leah,

> I'm gonna scream if I hear one more sappy love song!!

Personally, I really enjoy sappy love songs, but that's just me...

> Does anyone have any suggestions of GOOD songs that'll
> give me hope & not rip my heart
> I love most all music...
> I'm a big '80's music fan

Well, then, here's an oldie but goodie...

Don't Worry, Be Happy (Bobby McFerrin)

Here's a little song I wrote
You might want to sing it note for note
Don't worry be happy
In every life we have some trouble
When you worry you make it double
Don't worry, be happy......

Ain't got no place to lay your head
Somebody came and took your bed
Don't worry, be happy
The land lord say your rent is late
He may have to litigate
Don't worry, be happy
Look at me I am happy
Don't worry, be happy
Here I give you my phone number
When you worry call me
I make you happy
Don't worry, be happy
Ain't got no cash, ain't got no style
Ain't got not girl to make you smile
But don't worry be happy
Cause when you worry
Your face will frown
And that will bring everybody down
So don't worry, be happy (now).....

There is this little song I wrote
I hope you learn it note for note
Like good little children
Don't worry, be happy
Listen to what I say
In your life expect some trouble
But when you worry
You make it double
Don't worry, be happy......
Don't worry don't do it, be happy
Put a smile on your face
Don't bring everybody down like this
Don't worry, it will soon pass
Whatever it is
Don't worry, be happy

This is the one that I sing over and over and OVER:

Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take

I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay

I'll be watching you

O can't you see
You belong to me
My poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

I'll be watching you

Since you've geen gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please
O can't you see
You belong to me
My poor heart aches
With every breath you take
Every move you
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

I'll be watching you

Every move you make
Every step you take

I'll be watching you

So, anyone want to tell me who sang it and when? I know I'm in England, but I bet you all know this one...

Yep Police/Sting and it was an 80's tune called "Every breath you take".

Try my favorite by Gloria Gaynor "I will survive!"

or maybe "Since you been gone" by Kelly Clarkson

I'll have a search, see if I can find him. In the meantime, here's a good ol classic...

You walked into the party
Like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror
As you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed
That they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and....

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave

But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams
They were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee and....

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga
And your horse naturally won
Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun

Well, you're where you should be all of the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy
Or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and....

You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?

Name of song, artist and year, anyone?

Rumor has it it was written about Warren Beatty(notice I didn't say Donny O) although both deny it.

"Every Breath You Take" was played to death on American radio in the 80's and 90's. We've all heard it more than once, I'd wager. It's currently played on stations with 70's-80's formats. (I listen to one.)

Lyrics to John Mellencamp's "Your Life is Now" (this has to be at least the tenth time I've posted them, and I'll throw in the bonus feature, Don Henley's "Heart of the Matter")

Mellencamp, "Your Life Is Now", 1998

See the moon roll across the stars
See the seasons turn like a heart
Your father's days are lost to you
This is your time here to do what you will do

CHORUS:
Your life is now your life is now your life is now
In this undiscovered moment
Lift your head up above the crowd
We could shake this world
If you would only show us how
Your life is now

Would you teach your children to tell the truth
Would you take the high road if you could choose
Do you believe you're a victim of a great compromise
'Cause I believe you could change your mind and change our lives

CHORUS

Would you teach your children to tell the truth
This is your time here to do what you will do

CHORUS

Your life is now your life is now your life is now
In this undiscovered moment
Lift your head up above the crowd
We could shake this world
If you would only show us how
Your life is now

***

Henley, "Heart of the Matter", 1989

I got the call today, I didn't wanna hear
But I knew that it would come
An old true friend of ours was talkin' on the phone
She said you found someone
And I thought of all the bad luck,
And the struggles we went through
And how I lost me and you lost you
What are these voices outside love's open door
Make us throw off our contentment
And beg for something more?

I'm learning to live without you now
But I miss you sometimes
The more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought I knew, I'm learning again
I've been tryin' to get down to the Heart of the Matter
But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think it's about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me anymore

These times are so uncertain
There's a yearning undefined
...People filled with rage
We all need a little tenderness
How can love survive in such a graceless age
The trust and self-assurance that can lead to happiness
They're the very things we kill, I guess
Pride and competition cannot fill these empty arms
And the work I put between us,
Doesn't keep me warm

I'm learning to live without you now
But I miss you, Baby
The more I know, the less I understand
All the things I thought I figured out, I have to learn again
I've been tryin' to get down to the Heart of the Matter
But everything changes
And my friends seem to scatter
But I think it's about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me anymore

There are people in your life who've come and gone
They let you down and hurt your pride
Better put it all behind you; life goes on
You keep carrin' that anger, it'll eat you inside

I've been tryin' to get down to the Heart of the Matter
But my will gets weak
And my thoughts seem to scatter
But I think it's about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me anymore

I've been tryin' to get down to the Heart of the Matter
Because the flesh will get weak
And the ashes will scatter
So I'm thinkin' about forgiveness
Forgiveness
Even if, even if you don't love me anymore

The song that gets me up and dancing no matter what my mood is "Breakin'" by "The Music".....(Most of the words are hard to figure out but don't worry, you'll be too busy jumping around the room to worry about it...CRANK IT UP!)

My favorite optimistic song -
"Better Days" by the Kinks - circa 82 or 83?...
I recently posted the lyrics here under a thread called something like "A Song for All of US"

Rob Thomas music

July 1 2005, 2:11 AM

I love his new CD...these are my favorite songs on it at the moment...love the sounds of each one.

Song: Lonely No More

Artist name: Rob Thomas

Now it seems to me
That you know just what to say
But words are only words
Can you show me something else
Can you swear to me
That you'll always feel this way
Show me how you feel
More than ever, baby
(Chorus)
I don't wanna be lonely no more
I don't wanna have to pay for this
I don't wanna know the lover at my door
Is just another heartache on my list
I don't wanna be angry no more
You know I could never stand for this
When you tell me that you love me
Know for sure
I don't wanna be lonely anymore

It's hard for me
With my heart still on the mend
Open up to me
Like you do your girlfriends
You sing to me
And it's harmony
Girl what you do to me is everything
Make me say anything
Just to get you back again
Why can't we just try
(Chorus)
What if I was good to you
What if you were good to me
What if I could hold you
'Til I feel you move inside of me
What if it was paradise
What if we were symphonies
What if I gave all my life to
Find some way to stand beside you
(Chorus)

Artist: Rob Thomas
Album : Something To Be
Song: Something To Be

Hey man
I don't wanna hear about love no more
I don't wanna talk about how I feel
I don't really wanna be me no more

Dress down now I look a little too
Boy next door
Maybe I should try to find a downtown whore
That'll make me look hardcore
I need you to tell me what to stand for

I've been looking for something
Something I've never seen
We're all looking for something
Something to be

Hey man
Play another one of those heartbreak songs
Tell another story how things go wrong
And they never get back
My pain is a platinum stack
Take that shit back
You don't wanna be me when it all goes wrong
You don't wanna see me with the houselights on
I'm a little too headstrong
Stand tall
I don't wanna get walked on

I can't stand what I'm starting to be
I can't stand the people that I'm starting to need
There's so much now
That can go wrong
And I don't need somebody
Trying to help it along
It's the same old song
Everybody says you've been away too long
Everybody wanna take you what went wrong
Wanna make you like an icon
Till you believe that they're right

Artist: Rob Thomas
Album : Something To Be
Song: This Is How A Heart Breaks

Lyrics :

Don't you wanna go for a ride
Just keep your hands inside
And make the most out of life
Now don't you take it for granted

Life is like a mean machine
It made a mess outta me
It left me caught between
Like an angry dream I was stranded

And I'm steady but I'm starting to shake
And I don't know how much more I can take

This is it now
Everybody get down
This is all I can take
This is how a heart breaks
You take a hit now you feel it break down
Make you stay wide awake
This is how a heart breaks

Don't you wanna go for a ride
Down to the other side
Feels so good you could cry
Now won't you do what I told you
I remember when you used to be shy
Yeah, once we were so fine
You and I why you gotta make it so hard on me

And I'm sorry but it's not a mistake
And I'm running but you're getting away

You're not the best thing that I knew
Never was never cared too much
For all this hanging around
It's just the same thing all the time
Never get what I want
Never get too close to the end of the line
You're just the same thing that I knew back before the time
When I was only for you

I looked up "You're So Vain "on the internet. It was in '73 and it seems that Ms Simon still won't reveal who it was really about. Most say it was Warren Beatty, but apparently she wants to keep the mystery surrounding that song going. (interesting bit of trivia there  )

I was always a big James Taylor fan and have recently pulled out some of his music.

My teenagers are big into the Eagles right now, so I'm listening to that as well. I'd forgotten how many really good songs they had. "Wasted Time" brought back some memories from high school. It's hard to beat their music when you just want to crank something up.

Hello all,

I love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. My favorite is "you got lucky"

You better watch what you say, you better watch what you do to me. Don't get carried away. Girl, if you can do better than me GO yeah GO but remember

Good love is hard to find. Good love is hard to find.
You got lucky babe, you got lucky babe when I found you.

You put a hand to my cheek and then you turn your eyes away. If you don't feel complete, if I don't take you all of the way then GO yeah GO but remember

Good love is hard to find. Good love is hard to find,
You got luck babe, you got lucky babe when I found you.

Plus if you wanna hear a pissed off female singing, check out Alanis Morisette. "You learn" and "you oughta know" to name a few. All her songs are gritty and some what vulgar. I find her entertaining and I promise you won't be crying or sad listening to her. O

I love that Tom Petty song

July 9 2005, 12:02 AM

I remember it came on the radio a few weeks after Dday, and I told my wife that it was how I felt then. she agreed it was apropriate.

Alanis...she never impressed me with singing ability but she did have alot of energy. But then that song came out, cant remember the name - this was around my Dday also in 02 and I HATED this song - because - the song talked about her real-life love affair with her older married producer when she was an underage pop star in Canada. Kind of sheds a different light on You Oughta Know, or maybe thats a reason for it.

Anyway heres a few of many kick-ass pick me up songs that I crank up regularly....

Ring of Fire - Social Distortion
In a Big Country-Big Country
Alice in chains - Man in the box
Disturbed - Remember
Evanesence - Bring me to life
Fight the good fight-Triumph
Running on empty-Jackson brown
You got another think coming-Judas Priest
Little fighter-White lion
Matthew good-Hello time bomb

and of course

Weathered - Creed

Hey Kenny,

I didn't say Alanis was a good girl, I just said her music was gritty and for me highly entertaining. Now if I knew the message behind some of her music... thats a different subject. She's just a pissed off woman for one reason or another.... I'm a bit of a pissed off woman too. I really like alot of the classic rock. But Tom really rocks. Wish you and your W all the best. O

"sappy love songs"

July 9 2005, 7:00 PM

Anybody follow Lucinda Williams? Quite the songwriter. If you weren't thinking about cryin' you sure would after a few of her songs. That woman has sure been there and done that. Great therapy songs for me. And Jason Moraz? Wonderful young artist with messages galore. And my all-around favorite Van Morrison. And the lyrics of Leonard Cohen....here's a famous song.

Bird on the Wire

Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in an old midnight choir,
I have tried in my way to be free.
Like a worm on a hook,
like a knight bent down
in some old fashioned book
it was the shape of our
love that twisted me.

And if I have been unkind,
I hope you can find a way
to let it all go right on by.
If I have been untrue,
it's just that I thought
a lover had to be
some kind of liar too.

Like a babe stillborn,
like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who
reached out to me.
But I swear by this song
and by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to you.

Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry
no more.
It's over now, it's over babe
don't cry no more, I say don't cry
anymore.

Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in some old midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

>>Anybody follow Lucinda Williams?<<

Yup. She writes a few love songs but they are rarely sappy. For example, take "Those Three Days":

You say there's always gonna be this thing
Between us days are filled with dreams
Scorpions crawl across my screen
Make their home beneath my skin
Underneath my dress stick their tongues
Bite through the flesh down to the bone
And I have been so fuckin' alone
Since those three days

Did you only want me for those three days?
Did you only need me for those three days?
Did you love me forever just for those three days?

You built a nest inside my soul
You rest your head on leaves of gold
You managed to crawl inside my brain
You found a hole and in you came
You sleep like a baby breathing
Comfortably between truth and pain
But the truth is nothing's been the same
Since those three days

Did you only want me for those three days?
Did you only need me for those three days?
Did you love me forever just for those three days?

Here's another one from Leonard Cohen

I never knew
(until you walked away)
you had the perfect ass.

Forgive me,
for not falling in love
with your face

Actually you did post them about halfway up. Middle age's a bitch aint it. Memory's first to go. At least thats what Ive heard. Cant remember what is second.....

Yep charlie thats where rustedandweathered came from. And by the way, whats up with 5 edits for a 4 line 25 word post? Sheesh I though I was anal about getting the post just right.

Anyway heres the Creed lyrics, I sure related to feeling this way the first two years or so. still do far too often really....

WEATHERED - Creed

I lie awake on a long, dark night
I can’t seem to tame my mind
Slings and arrows are killing me inside
Maybe I can’t accept the life that’s mine
No I can’t accept the life that’s mine

Simple living is my desperate cry
Been trading love with indifference
yeah it suits me just fine
I try to hold on but I’m calloused to the bone
Maybe that’s why I feel alone
Maybe that’s why I feel so alone

Me…I’m rusted and weathered
Barely holding together
I’m covered with skin that peels and
it just won’t heal

The sun shines and I can’t avoid the light
I think I’m holding on to life too tight
Ashes to ashes and dust to dust
Sometimes I feel like giving up
Sometimes I feel like giving up

Me…I’m rusted and weathered
Barely holding together
I’m covered with skin that peels
and it just won’t heal

The day reminds me of you
The night hides your truth
The earth is a voice
Speaking to you
Take all this pride
And leave it behind
Because one day it ends
One day we die
Believe what you will
That is your right
But I choose to win
So I choose to fight
To fight

I'm trying to keep up with GT and? Ah, who the hell was that, I know it is a guy? See I'm losing that memory thing too.

I believe you are referring to Tex. He and I hold the record for most edits on our posts.

I once edited a two word post four times. I'm not sure if Tex can beat that one or not.  LOL

RE: those sappy love songs

This is an "attitude" blues song by Chris Smither. He is a genius with lyrics, an awesome guitarist, and fun to watch perform. Whenever I have heard him do this song, all the jilted and betrayed audience members almost bring the house down with their knowing cheers.

Winsome Smile

Stop thinkin' now, quit second guessing all your failed relations,
with your would've, could've, should've, maybe, might-a-beens.
I'll show you how, send your feelings out for lubrication,
lose those blues and screw your head on tight again.

She cut you bad, your heart is just a scar.
if you could just get mad you would be better off by far.
What you want is taken, what you need is better circulation.
Work that heavy heart and get it light again.

Listen to me now, you suffer from a sad misapprehension,
that if she could read your mind she'd see just how it oughta be.
But, she's read it all by now, and your style don't get a grip on her attention,
she ain't in your state of mind and she don't wanna' be.

You think if she'd just talk you could explain it all,
she'd be polite, but all night she's been hoping you won't call.
She'll say it's all her fault, she'll always be your friend, plus loads of
shit to dumb to mention.
I been that road, it's paved with good intentions.

It's hard to believe, but I'm tellin you your heart will soon recover,
but you don't want it to, you love this aching agony.
It's noble and it's true, you won't forsake this pain for other lovers,
cause happiness would fill your mind with misery.

But time will wound all heels and it ain't pretty, with any luck at all she'll
find some dope that you can pity.
Your loss is measured in illusions, your gain is all in bitter sweet intelligence.
and your winsome smile will lose some of its innocence.
Your winsome smile will lose some of its innocence.
