>>Why is Janice Wolf of USA famous?<<

Who?

>>American flag: how many stars, how many stripes, what do they represent?<<

50 stars, 13 stripes. Since the mid-1800's, the 13 stripes have represented the original 13 states and the stars have been the same number as the states in the Union.

>>Why are the stripes alternating colours and what is the blue rectangle in the upper hoist side corner for and what does it contain and why? <<

The blue field represents the night sky and it contains "a new constellation". I seem to remember that red was chosen to represent the blood of the patriots.

>>And what were the 13 original colonies known as?<<

(smartass answer) "British North America"

The 13 original STATES were: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia.

>>How many American presidents have there been and name them. Clue: One was Ronald Reagan, but what was his middle name?<<

42 men have served as president. We consider George W. Bush the 43rd president because Grover Cleveland is counted twice (he counts as the 22nd AND 24th president, serving two separate 4-year terms; he lost his first re-election bid to Benjamin Harrison, then defeated Harrison four years later in the rematch).

Ronald Reagan's middle name was "Wilson", the last name of the 28th president. (It is possible that his parents chose his middle name after the sitting president. That was a common practice in this country. One of my ancestors was named "George Washington Xxxxxxx".)

There have been two "father and son" presidential combinations. John Adams, the second president, was the father of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president (both were ambassadors to the Court of St. James); George Bush, the 41st president, is the father of George W. Bush, the 43rd president. There was one grandfather-and-grandson combination. Wm. Henry Harrison (the first president to die in office, I think he was 8th president) was the grandfather of Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president.

>>What is Ursus Americanus?<<

Isn't that the gray wolf?

>>What were Christopher Columbus's ships called?<<

Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.

>>What food did Christopher Columbus bring back?<<

Tomatoes? Fish? No...had to be pork.

>>What live animals did they have on board the ship?<<

Sailors.

>>Where was Christopher Columbus born?<<

Italy.

>>In what year did he set sail on his voyage of
discovery?<<

1492.

Re: Questions

July 14 2005, 10:53 PM

Omigod, I get to correct Chris!!

Chris, Massachusetts never was, and never will be, a state. It's a Commonwealth. I think there's a couple of other "states" that are really Commonwealths as well.

I think Christopher Colombus brought back maize, better known as corn.

Now, let's throw it back: What state was the FIRST to officially ratify the constitution and become a state?

Who was the Father of the Constitution?

What was Paul Revere's occupation?

A famous person who died at the Alamo invented a weapon that is used by hunters (and others) to this day. Name the man and the weapon he invented.

How many American civilians were killed on US soil in WW2 by enemy attacks?

What was John Wayne's real name?

What was Marilyn Monroe's real name?

What famous Elvis Presley song uses the melody of the Italian love song, "O Solo Mio"?

What is Ozzy Osbournes real name?

What was Elton John's given name, and what is his legal name now? Include the middle name in both answers.

Well well well said the man as he came across a waterhole in the desert

July 15 2005, 5:15 AM

Sandy gets to tell you guys some stuff about America!!!!

Janice Wolf owned an african watusi steer name Lurch who had a horn circumference of 35.6 inches. Can't believe you didn't know that!!

Also, you've never heard of Old Glory? Here's what I found out:
There are 50 stars representing the 50 states and there are 13 stripes representing the 13 original states.

Flag: thirteen equal horizontal stripes of red (top and bottom) alternating with white; there is a blue rectangle in the upper hoist-side corner bearing 50 small white five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating with rows of five stars; the 50 stars represent the 50 states, the 13 stripes represent the 13 original colonies; known as Old Glory; the design and colors have been the basis for a number of other flags including Chile, Liberia, Malaysia, and Puerto Rico

I think you're right with the Presidents, so I'm not going to paste them all on here.

Ursus Americanus? Black bear

Someone back there got the ships right, but it wasn't Kath!!
He brought back avocados
He carried hens along with the sailors I expect
Yes, born in Italy, I was looking for Genoa though
And yes 1492

Think you need to do some homework before I set the next exam xxxx

Re: Questions

July 15 2005, 6:46 AM

Sandy, if you re-read Chris' post, he explained more about the flag than you did...

I'm not sure WHY my home state is a Commonwealth as opposed to a state. My guess is that some ancestor of the Kennedy family decided that we were going to be too liberal to be a state... Maybe he was looking ahead to Prohibition times, where it would make it easier to import the illegal whiskey from Ireland and get it shipped to Al Capone.... LOL

Now you know how the Kennedy clan in High-Anus got so rich...

Seriously, I think it had to with arguments about states right vs. federal rights vs. commonwealth rights, and the leaders of this colony came down on the side of commonwealth rights.

Now Sandy, can you attempt MY questions without looking up the answers on the Internet?

Re: Questions

July 15 2005, 11:06 AM

I do know that John Wayne's real name is Marion Morrison. My dad was a huge Duke fan and my dad's middle name was Marion but not named after John Wayne. My first name is Wayne but I was not named after John Wayne but rather I was named after my brother's then best friend who WAS named after John Wayne.

John Wayne had a famous grand-nephew named Tommy Morrison who was a heavyweight boxer and a serious contender until he contracted HIV. Tommy Morrison was the up and coming protege seduced by the "dark side" in Rocky V who in the movie squared off with Rocky Balboa in a cool street fight at the end of the movie.

I remember Elton John's first name is Reginald but the last name escapes me which is fitting because thanks to him I only remember Marilyn Monroe's first name as Norma Jean.

The Alamo guy with the weapon has to be Bowie and the Bowie Knife, but I keep thinking Sam Bowie who was a center for the Kentucky Wildcat's basketball team in the early 80s. Then there is David Bowie, real name David Jones, who changed his name to not be confused with then mega-star Davey Jones of the Monkees. Before David Bowie came to be, David Jones was a sort of famous representative of some activist group that stood for long hair or the "Mod Movement". He had done interviews on behalf of his group and long hair on British television.

Was the number of US Soldiers killed on US soil in WWII a trick question since I do not believe, I could be wrong, that Hawaii and Pearl Harbor was part of the US yet at that time?

How is Massachusetts not a state and instead a commonwealth? What does that mean and does it then void the Red Sox' claim to last years' World Series and the Cardinals actually are the champions by default?

And was Christopher Columbus thin or pudgy like Gerard DePardeu? And considering that France hates Americans, why are the French most famous for Jerry Lewis and Lance Armstrong?

James Madison.

What was Paul Revere's Occupation?

Most commonly, silversmith.

A famous person who died at the Alamo invented a weapon that is used by hunters (and others) to this day. Name the man and the weapon he invented.

Jim Bowie, Bowie Knife.

Right

July 15 2005, 11:24 AM

I'm not cheating so will probably get em all wrong!!! And when I started, nobody had written any answers and I haven't read theirs (yet!!)
So:
First state? I'm going for Pennsylvania which brings me to the second question cos I reckon it was William Penn because here in a little town not far from me called Wells in Somerset, there's a plaque about William Penn who went to Pennsylvania
Paul Revere. I can remember something about him riding a horse and carrying news
The Alamo bloke, I can only think of a knife called Bowie so it must have been named after someone
Us civilians killed on US soil? I'm guessing none, assuming that Pearl Harbour were all military???
John Wayne - can only come up with Marion
Marilyn Monroe - Baker?
Elvis song, no idea. Heartbreak Hotel, but the tune is used over here to advertise ice creams called Cornetto's which are totally yummy
Ozzy Ozbourne? No idea! Osmond Osborne????
Elton John - is there a Dwight in there somewhere?

See, thick!!!

Re: Questions

July 15 2005, 11:29 AM

I believe there were some U.S. civilians killed on U.S. soil during WWII. (Assuming it's not a trick question, and we are talking due to Japanese or German activity....)

Hawaii was a U.S. territory at the time, and considered U.S. soil, so there would be some during the Pearl Harbor attack.

Plus, the Japanese occupied two of the Aleutian Islands (Attu, and I forget the other), so there might have been a couple there.

Plus, there was some hairbrained Japanese scheme to attach bombs to balloons, float them over the Pacific, and start forest fires. I recall reading about one of those bombs actually reaching the west coast, and an American family on a picinic discovering it and setting it off, so possibly a few more there....

Elton John - Reginald Dwight.

Marilyn Monroe - Norma Jean Baker.

The question was US Civilians and not servicemen killed during WWII. Would anybody know that?

Follow this recipe carefully. Do not overcook!

July 15 2005, 9:35 PM

Recipe for ground rat meat and chili paste:

Ingredients:

1/4 cup fish oil
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1-1/2 cups of dried red chili peppers
4 long green peppers
8 large bay leaves
1/2 cup holy basil leaf
1 tablespoon salt
4 chopped garlic cloves
4 small rats
Initial Preparation:

With a mortar and pestle place the 1-1/2 cups of dried red chili peppers, and begin to mash until a red paste is achieved. Add a tablespoon of water to make moist.
Chop garlic cloves.
Place bay leaves in a small bowl of water. Roll two bay leaves at a time and then thinly shred and place in dry dish. Do for all 8 leaves - two at a time.
Place holy basil leaves in a small bowl of water.
Dice long green peppers. Do small cross sections so look like wheels and place in dry dish.
Skin 4 small rats. Clean and place heart and liver in separate bowl.
Cooking preparations:

Place oil in a wok over an open flame and heat
Place small rats in a grate, and lightly cook over an open flame on both sides until medium cooked. Do not cook well done.
Mix red chili paste with hot oil and stir well.
Finely chop rats on a wood chopping block over and over until makes a smooth ground meat texture. Be sure to chop all the bones well.
Add chopped rat meat to the red chili paste and oil and stir well.
Add diced green peppers and stir well. Let cook for 5 minutes.
Add 1/2 tablespoon of salt.
Add whole liver and heart and sir in.
Add holy basil leaves to mixture and stir in well and let cook for another 5 minutes. Be sure not to burn the chili paste - add a little water if necessary to keep moist but not runny.
Add chopped garlic cloves
Add shredded bay leaves and stir in and cover and let simmer for 5 minutes or more to let all the flavors mix well.
Serving:

Serve ground rat meat on an oval dish with livers and heart on the top. Circle with garnish of basil leaves and halves of lime. Serve with white rice. The flavor will be hot and tangy with a mild crunchy chew to it. It is not to be considered the main dish, but a nice hot and spicy accent to other prepared dishes. Very good on crackers, but Thais do not generally eat crackers. Recipe would not go over well in Peoria, Illinois or Davenport, Iowa.

Re: Questions

July 15 2005, 10:16 PM

So Christopher Columbus was Colonel Sanders' ancestor?

Cory's question (that others haven't answered):

>>What state was the FIRST to officially ratify the constitution and become a state?<<

Connecticut..."The Constitution State".

Regarding states and commonwealths:

Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky are officially called "commonwealth" in their state constitutions. (We won't get into the status of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico here.) There is no legal distinction, and the United States Constitution does not make any reference to the three original commonwealths as distinct from the other ten original states. (Kentucky was originally part of Virginia, and later became the 15th state, so it adopted the term "commonwealth" also. West Virginia, which was part of Virginia until the Civil War era, calls itself a state.)

One important and significant distinction between states in this country is that the legal system of Louisiana is different from the other states. It is based upon the Napoleonic Code (as opposed to the English Common Law system which forms the foundation of the other states' justice systems).

Here's the answers:

What state was the FIRST to officially ratify the constitution and become a state?

Connecticut... Perfesser Chris on the move!

Who was the Father of the Constitution?

James Madison

What was Paul Revere's occupation?

Silversmith was correct. He made many implements used by the Order of Masons in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Matter of fact, in nearby Palmer, MA, there are some original implements made by Mr. Revere on display at the local Masonic Lodge.

A famous person who died at the Alamo invented a weapon that is used by hunters (and others) to this day. Name the man and the weapon he invented.

Jim Bowie

How many American civilians were killed on US soil in WW2 by enemy attacks?

According to the History Channel special that was done on the history of the famous "Double Nickel" squad, one. The Japanese discovered the jet stream, and DID fly balloons with incendiaries across the ocean. Many more than one made it to the Northwest portion of our country, and the all African-American paratrooper firefighting squadron, aka the Double Nickels because their squad number was 55, fought the fires started by these incendiaries. The WAS a family camping in the area of a downed balloon, and the father was killed when he went to investigate it. He was the only US civilian casualty on US soil during WW2.

Pearl Harbor doesn't count. Not because it wasn't US soil, because we had not officially declared war at that point.

What was John Wayne's real name?

Double M, Marion Morrison

What was Marilyn Monroe's real name?

Norma Jean Baker

What famous Elvis Presley song uses the melody of the Italian love song, "O Solo Mio"?

It's Now Or Never. Sing along with me now. First, sing "It's Now Or Never". Then sing, "O Solo Mio". You'll get it...

What is Ozzy Osbournes real name?

James Micheal Osbourne

What was Elton John's given name, and what is his legal name now? Include the middle name in both answers.

Now I can be picky on Sandy. Notice that I wanted the MIDDLE names as well...

The answer is Reginald Kenneth Dwight and his legal name is now Elton Hercules John

I was in Australia during one of their big bush fires and a US helicopter called Elvis was brought over. He was our hero, and I got to see him a number of times, filling up with water from lagoons and even peoples swimming pools to put out the fires. Would this be the same ones?:

Elvis - king of the firefighters

The Air-Crane can bomb fires with 9,500 litres of water

Elvis is alive and well, helping to tackle bushfires sweeping the Australian state of New South Wales.
The Erickson Air-Crane Helitanker - dubbed Elvis because of its time with the US National Guard in Memphis, Tennessee - helped save almost 300 homes in Sydney's north-west suburbs, dumping thousands of gallons of water on the advancing flames.

Do you get a programme called 'Ready Steady Cook' where members of the audience bring in a bag full of food for the resident TV chefs to make a meal out of in 20 minutes? The rule is the food has to cost less than £5 but they usually allow a little leeway. So here's your chance. Remember, it has to be prepared and served in 20 minutes and you're allowed to use the usual larder stuff like salt pepper oil cream milk eggs flour red or white wine etc. Here's your bag full:
chicken breast fillets
field mushrooms (the big open flat ones)
stilton cheese or strong mature cheddar
an onion
pasta (any sort you like)
cucumber
prawns

20 minutes: ready steady go!!
