Okay, I have not looked anything up, which should be obvious when you read the answers...

1. Name the TV show with the character Sergeant Bilko

Car (some number), Where Are You?

2. How many grooves are on one side of an LP record

One very long groove.

3. Enzo the Baker had the first dialogue in which Oscar winning film

Fiddler On The Roof?

4. Which musician played the part of Curtis in The Blues Brothers

Which one was Curtis?

5. In which film does Morgan Freeman play an inmate called Red
6. Who wrote the book 'Taken on Trust' about his time as a hostage
7. Which series of books have text by Goscinny and drawings by Uderzo

No clue on the above

8. Which 1980's pope star's autobiography is entitled 'Take it like a man'

Um, George Michaels? LOL

9. Which artist is responsible for 'Self portrait with bandaged ear'

Vincent Van Gogh

10. Who created Inspector Morse

Mr. Code

11. Which artist shot and killed himself while painting 'Wheatfield with Crows'
12. Which fictional character had a dog named Jip and a pig named Gub Gub

No clue on the above

13. How many loaves and how many fish did Jesus use to feed 5,000

3 loaves, 5 fish

14. How many times can a volleyball be touched by one team before it crosses the net

Trick question: It CAN be touched only once before going over the net. You're ALLOWED to have 3 touches maximum before the ball crosses the net. So, the way you worded the question, the answer is 1, 2 OR 3.

15. What is the sum of all the numbers round a dart board

210 (Added in my head!)

16. Which country won the cricket world cup in 1996

Aren't they still playing the final? LOL
I'll guess Jamaica

17. Who was the first professional footballer (soccer to you USians) to be knighted

I'm thinking it's NOT Franz Beckenbauer...

18. In which years of the 20th century were the Olympics cancelled due to war

1940 & '44?

19. Whats my middle name

Helga

20. Whats my budgies name AND NO CHEATING!!!

Hazel

How'd I do?

So, you like volleyball?

Okay, without looking it up, WHERE was volleyball invented?

What are the EXACT heights of the men's and women's nets?

How wide are the lines? What are the dimensions of the court?

How can a ball be ruled "in" if it lands outside the lines?

What is the "hitting zone" and what are the dimensions?

How high must the roof be from ground level to be considered official for an indoor game?

How wide WAS the serving area (before the rule changed) and where was it located?

What's the difference between a "give block" and a "take block"?

What are restrictions that govern a legal serve?

Oh by the way, in my younger days, I was a USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) sanctioned official in volleyball. And yes, I can still answer all the above questions quite easily.

Cory,

When my H was younger, his nickname was "Showers" - he like hard spikes and swan dives. In his older days, I don't see any verticals but many sprain figures and bruised ribs.

You know when you should quit.....

> 2. How many grooves are on one side of an LP record
> One very long groove.

Ahh... See I'd have been there trying to count...

Of course, who actually owns a record these days anyway? I replaced all of mine with 8-tracks, which later got replaced with cassette tapes, which later got replaced with CD's. Now we save our favorite songs from old CD's as MP3's we can play on the computer...

Also, judging from the pops and skips my old records had, there was a heck of lot more than one groove on them things...

> 13. How many loaves and how many fish did Jesus
> use to feed 5,000
> 3 loaves, 5 fish

Ah yes, I've heard the story many times. But, I'd like to know just how BIG those loaves and fishes were! I mean, just the other day I saw a world record omelet on the news that fed a whole lot of people too. And last night I watched a show on 21 foot sharks. Sounds like a feast to me.

The bible gives detailed measurements for the Ark, so I'd like to see some facts on them thar fishies. I've heard a lot of good ole boy fish stories claiming they caught a fish that could feed thousands. More like a guppy held too close to the camera.

> 15. What is the sum of all the numbers round a dart board

They have numbers? I always just aimed for the little circle in the middle (and usually hit the wall instead).

> 17. Who was the first professional footballer
> (soccer to you USians) to be knighted

"Sir" Elton John or "Sir" Mick Jagger, right?

> WHERE was volleyball invented?

I would guess some beach in southern California, or else a nudist resort...

> What are the EXACT heights of the men's and
> women's nets?

Uhh... All the volleyball nets I have seen kind of droop in the middle. Maybe 8 feet on the ends and 6 feet in the middle?

> How high must the roof be from ground level to
> be considered official for an indoor game?

Higher than the net?

I obviously know nothin about nothin...

Gina, I knew it was time to quit playing volleyball when I started losing the damn thing and it would drop on my head. I was a setter/back court specialist. No glory, just made all the other guys look good. When setting, you have to run towards the net as the ball goes over your head, then turn and find the ball that's already been passed by a teammate to your general area. Now, do that while looking through straws, and you'll see why I stopped.... MAN, I miss it!!!!

Retiring from officiating followed a little later..

Anthony, a beach in California isn't even CLOSE to being in the right part of the country.

You WERE close with 8 feet...

Re: Quiz time -

July 20 2005, 9:25 AM

Okay, Sandy posted the answers to her quiz, so here's your volleyball trivia answers...

Okay, without looking it up, WHERE was volleyball invented?

The Holyokd Boys Club, Holyoke Massachusetts. About a 20 minute drive from the place where basketball was invented (East Gym, campus of Springfield College). I've played volleyball in that historic gymnasium.

What are the EXACT heights of the men's and women's nets?

Men - 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches
Women - 7 feet, 4 3/8 inches

How wide are the lines? What are the dimensions of the court?

All line are 2 inches wide, and the dimensions are 60 feet by 30 feet.

How can a ball be ruled "in" if it lands outside the lines?

A ball is in if ANY PART of the ball is on or over the line. Therefore, a ball can LAND out of bounds as long as some part of it is hanging over the line. VERY tough to make that call when a ball is traveling at 80 - 90 miles an hour.

What is the "hitting zone" and what are the dimensions?

If you watch a game, you'll see a line 10 feet from the center line. Inside this line is the hitting zone, where ONLY front court players can attack. A back court player can jump in the air BEFORE crossing the line, spike the ball and land inside the zone. If they take off inside that zone, it's a dead ball and the opposing team gets the point. The dimensions are 10 feet by 30 feet.

How high must the roof be from ground level to be considered official for an indoor game?

25 feet

How wide WAS the serving area (before the rule changed) and where was it located?

It was 10 feet wide and located in the left corner. The serving area is now anywhere along that 30 foot back line. Wish that rule was in place when I played!

What's the difference between a "give block" and a "take block"?

A give block is when you block a spike and the ball rebounds back to your opponents side. A take block is the opposite. You can tell the intent of the blocker by the depth of the penetration over the net on the block.

What are restrictions that govern a legal serve?

A) The ball must be clearly struck with one hand.
B) If your feet are on the ground, you must be within the legal serving area. On a spike serve, you can be within the playing area when you strike the ball, as long as you are still in the air.
C) You must clearly release the ball before striking it.
D) The ball cannot be touched by a teammate before going over the net.
E) The ball IS allowed to touch the net while it passes over. That's another new rule that I wish was in place when I played...

And this doesn't even get into things like jousting, tooling a block, play off the net, the only time a "double hit" is legal, etc... LOTS of stuff to learn!
