The REALLY scary part is that, no matter how nice they are, I've still yet to see any picture, or video for that matter, that really does justice to the magnificence of the Grand Canyon.

My son did the Appalachian trail a few years ago right after he broke up in a 4 year relationship. He walked over 2200 miles from Georgia to Maine in about 5 months. (His girfriend told him to take a hike. Bad joke.) NM went up to Maine to meet him at the end of the trail. He was a different person when he came home, to say the least.
I bet he was a different person. Probably lots of long hair, a beard?...and maybe he even had to do a rain dance, huh?

Thanks for sharing those pics. I'm still mad at my ex b/c we went within 20 minutes of the Grand Canyon when we first got married traveling out to live in CA and he wouldn't stop. Accckkk!! Okay, time to let that go. LOL
I can top that. I lived in Tucson for approx 6 yrs. & only made it out of Tucson 4 or 5 times. Never did make it to the Grand Canyon or anywhere else in AZ. Stupid Me!I wannna be a desert dweller again!
3 miles down and three back up; THAT is a hike for sure.
What a magnificent place.
Every day I think about my upcoming trip. It makes me smile and I get excited. My son and I will do a short Mt. Fuji hike and then hit the hot springs. WEE HAAA.
RW, the second picture is just amazing, with the trail - or road - on the right side. I bet the "back up" part of the hike was not as nice as the way down the trail!!
Wow, that sure looks a little more picturesque than Illinois!!

I'm interested in that Appalachian trail. What's the scoop on that hike--a shorter version?
The Grand Canyon hikes to the bottom of the gorge are very serious adventures due to heat and extreme exertion. We left on those day hikes at 4:30am in order to get off the trail by 10:00am to avoid the high temperatures and complete lack of shade.
Harney Peak on the other hand involved a heavy hail storm, soaking cold rain, and we froze so that our hands didn't work for a few hours.
Moral of the story:
Be prepared.

I'll put you in touch with my son and he can tell you what sections are good for shorter hikes. He goes to the reunions every year with all the people who have finished the trail.
The hiking and trailer gig were very physical. The driving was long-ish too....4000mi. I do feel more fit, and lucky to be able to be so active with my teenaged son.
When are you out of your brace MM? Quinn always seems to be in and out of foot braces too. Is it a new style trend?
Wow, I want to see the rest of the pics. Looks like a fabulous trip. Was that your son with the long hair. I haven't seen him in a while. I will be home on the 4th. I hope we can get together soon and look at pics and eat salad.
See ya,

RW, if you do the Appalachian Trail, it passes by within a 1/2 hour drive of the Cory homestead as it makes its way through the Berkshires. Where it crosses Rte 90, it's only about 20 minutes from the Norman Rockwell Museum, Tanglewood, and tons of traditional picturesque New England towns. Alice's Restaurant is still there, in Stockbridge, and the church where they lived is now called the Guthrie Center. Arlo bought it and turned it into a performing arts center. And yes, he still lives there too, as does ol' Alice... And the railroad tracks are MUCH less than 1/2 mile away.. More like 50 yards.
And you thought the song was made up, didn't ya? LOL

I don't know. I have to go back to orthopedic man next mo. But I'm not letting this stop me from nothin. I just had my first Flamenco dance class from a beautiful Puerto Rican woman named Martita.
Boy was it a challenge. I'm doing more stuff now that I'm single than I ever thought possible.
My son and his buddy had hiked about 300 miles (I think they were in North Carolina at the time.) and they were way away from civilization. Out pops a dozen or so FBI agents out of the trees dressed in camo with automatic weapons. They were trying to capture the guy that had bombed the abortion clinics down in Florida. (I forgot his name) The FBI had gotten word that the guy was hiding out on the trail and people (relatives and friends) were giving him supplies. Anyway my son's buddy sorta fit the description of the guy. That's why they got checked. As quickly as they appeared, the FBI disappeared back into the tree tops.
I just wanted to say what great pictures! I have been to Az many, many times, when I was a kids...stayed for the summer with my aunt in Phoenix almost evey year. Not once have I been to the Grand Canyon. Maybe one day
those are great photos, RW. Reminds me of the traveling I got to do as a child. I remember the dunes, Mesa Verde, Pikes Peak, all that, -- vast, beautiful places -- but I haven't been to the Grand Canyon yet.
What wonderful memories you made with your son. SOMEDAY, I hope to get my kids out there before they leave the nest. We are so blessed to live in this country.
