EMDR

I had my 1st EMDR therapy on Tuesday. I'm amazed with how much better I feel. I hadn't even heard of this type of therapy, but when my new therapist suggested we try it, I started reading up on it.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. I'll briefly explain it, but go to the website for more details. My therapist asked me to bring to mind the incident causing me pain(my H in our bed in our Florida beach house with the OW), the negative thinking caused by this image, and the new thoughts I want to have. Then she moved her fingers rapidly back and forth in front of my eyes. After doing this a few times, I really did start to feel better, and more at peace than I have felt for almost 2 years.

The theory is this process links the left side of the brain with the right side and the traumatic memory can finally be processed and healing can begin. I know it sounds crazy, but remember I'm the logical math teacher, and I'm going back for more!

So, for Angela, Linda, Marie, Jordan, and everyone else who is still struggling, please look into this therapy.

My wife printed something out on that, but I just dismissed it as hypnotism type garbage.

Chrisy,

I never had it but have heard very intriguing things about that therapy.

There's info on what they know about it on this web site.

http://www.brianjwhelan.googlepages.com/emdr

They claim it can treat:

depression
childhood trauma
physical abuse
sexual abuse
obsessive-compulsive disorders
complicated grief
episodic rage
panic attacks
low self-esteem
relationship problems
performance anxiety
insomnia

I'm glad to hear this is helping you!

I'm in the field of clinical psychology and I can tell you that there are (as with anything) proponents and opponents of EMDR therapy. Research shows that the beneficial effect is primarily (if not entirely) based on the time spent talking about and envisioning the traumatic event. In psychology we call this "exposure." There is a TON of evidence that exposure is extremely effective. Essentially, the more you talk about it with a qualified professional, the better you get!

Thank you for sharing your success with this therapy!
