stretching things

I just received this cricket buckle in the mail today and was wondering if anyone had ideas on cleaning it?

My guess is that it was some sort of award buckle meant to be worn in a web-style belt. The patent is 1859, but I've been told it's likely 1870-ish. Game-used, but not quite the same game. If you have an interest in baseball history, ancestors, and related games, be sure to pick up David Block's new book "Baseball before we knew it". Great read.

I don't think I'd even attempt to clean it. Everytime you see someone on The Antique Roadshow with something that they've polished or cleaned, they always tell them they destroyed the value. Obviously this buckle isn't a Tiffany lamp, but I wouldn't mess with it if it were mine.

I think your suggestion is wise - I'll just display "as is" with some cricket cdv's.

COOL BUCKLE!
I agree with Rob-keep the "patina" as the "Roadshow" advises...
