Article: Game-Used Catcher's Gear

Hi everyone,

This is a great new site! I write a monthly column for Canadian Sports Collector magazine called Game Gear. I'm working on an upcoming article on game-worn catcher's equipment. I wondered if there might be any collector's out there who collect catcher's gear or at least have some in their collection?

You can e-mail me or respond to my post here.

Thanks
Kevin

Catching Equipment

Kevin,

Great topic..as an aside to the catchers gear, you may want to address what impacts all of this has on the jerseys wore under them.. I try to tell folks, when you are evaluating game wear, you have to take into account the position played.

Had a potential bidder on a 1951 Yogi Berra road jersey ask me about the jersey. He was concerned that the sleeve and arm area was much more soiled than the body. In addition, the "NEW YORK" on the chest was smooth, but rather clean by comparision. I pointed out the the chest protector would have kept the body of the jersey somewhat less exposed to dirt, but would feature wear from contact.

I also showed him where he could expect to see wear and in some cases mild rust from the straps and buckles..

Best of Luck with your feature..

Dave
