MLB Authentication - Does it help our hobby?

General Question for Comments

Does the MLB authentication process help or hinder the game used hobby? The question pertains to game used items - balls, jerseys, bases, line up cards, etc. versus the authentication of autographs.

Have you ever found errors in the database? Would you pay a premium for an MLB hologrammed item?

I've found a number of errors on items authenticated by MLB, especially on jerseys. There are at least a dozen throwback jerseys that I've seen authenticated as "game worn" that were issued to players that weren't even on the active roster at the time the game was played. Generally speaking, I think game used items authenticated by MLB should command a premium, but like anything - you better do your homework!

MLB Authentication

MLB uses Deloitte & Touche now to authenticate for them. They used to use Arthur Anderson & Co. and there were some issues.

The MLB system saved us some major issues on some jerseys we purchased. The dealer sold them as game used and we used the MLB #'d holograms to check online only to find out some of the jerseys were game issued! The dealer apologized and refunded our money.

In my opinion, the MLB Authenticated is probably the best out there, but as anything else---there can be errors.

That's ironic. MLB uses Deloitte and Touche and my wife says my collection's worth detoilet and douche.
