I would agree that someone got a great buy...I am asked frequently about where a person could consign an item..while I do have some opinions on what items seems to do better in certain venues, let me offer this..
The May's bat was actually up against two other premium May's items..The Minor League jersey and the 1969 home uniform. Too many items that run in the same catagory, appealing to same focus group tends to lower prices. You most often see this when a player or his heirs sell off his estate..
If I were going to consign a "top shelf" item, I would want to know from the auction house if they planned to run any others in the same vein. As a consigner, you should be entitled to that information...

I see the bat has the #24 written on the knob with a black marker. Does anyone know what year black sharpie style markers were first used to mark the knobs?
Yes - that bat sold for a reasonable price given the time period of the bat. Even crazier than that sale is the sale of a 1961 Mays Adirondack All Star Bat from the February Hunt Auction that sold for $7500 before the hammer. Now that's a steal! Check it out at www.huntauctions.com
