Clemens Jersey in Bricol

May 12 2005, 10:06 AM

Someone didn't do their research! "22" on front is too small for Astros Gamers. It doesn't matter if it is 0062 or 6200 tag, the numbers are too small!

Thanks,

Chris Boyd

Bricol-bad shirt

May 12 2005, 10:30 AM

Chris-
I have dealt with Brian at Bricol, and he is a solid individual and would not knowingly sell a bad shirt. I sent him an email earlier today and informed him of the same concerns you surfaced, along with my concerns about the 6200 tag (retail) and size 52 (retail). This is simply a retail jersey being offered as a gamer. These size 52, 6200 Clemens are being offered on Ebay for $225.

Given Brian's reputation, I doubt he will allow this item to stay in the auction. I'll update this site with his response to me.

I have a different opinion of Brian

May 13 2005, 11:26 AM

My opinion of of Bricol Sports Auctions and Brian Collard in particular aren't too high. I was high bidder on his auction about two years ago or so and won a 1954 Wilson Franks card that was in awsome conditon except for a very slight cut at the bottom. I ended up getting it for just over $300. I also won a autographed Hideo Nomo Japaneze jersey that was supposed to have been game used with the autograph rating a 10 as well as a vintage store model Joe Jackson LS bat.

Well, I paid for the auction and asked to have the items overnighted to me. They told me it would be and extra $15 shipping to have them overnighted to which I paid. Well the next day came and went and then another. I called after waiting two days on a package that should have been overnighted. I was told that they suddenly could not find the 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams card and that it was lost. I was very unhappy because I got it at a great deal. In my opinion, it was suddenly lost due to the fact of the selling price and Bricol or the consigner was not happy about it. Well, I finally received the other two items and that was an experience in itself. The Nomo autographed jersey ended up having some red stain all over it and the autograph which was never mentioned in the auction description. The vintage store model Joe Jackson bat turned out to be a reproduction model that looked like it was made within the last 10 years. I hope that is not what they refer to as vintage.

I was able to return both items and get my money back, but I am still steamed over the Ted Williams card and needless to say I just don't trust them or the items in thier auction.

Sosa glove

May 13 2005, 6:18 PM

Potential Collectors,

Please do further due diligence on the Sammy Sosa glove in this auction. Rawlings Sosa gloves of that era usually had a Dominican Flag, not an American Flag on them. The model # is correct, but from photo you cannot see if his name is embroidered in the glove.

Proceed at your own risk. Investiage further if you are interested.

"CARLOS BELTRAN AUTOGRAPHED 2004 HOUSTON ASTROS SPRING TRAINING GAME USED BAT"

Funny, Carlos wasn't an Astro until mid-season 2004.

May 14 2005, 11:12 AM

Has anyone contacted Brian Collard about the alleged mistakes? - - - - - The Schilling glove, Sosa glove, and now Beltran bat? - - - - - He should be notified that these posts are up on this website so that he can respond to these observations/alleged mistakes.

Brian Colliard

May 14 2005, 11:27 AM

I contacted Brian 2 days ago about the bad red Astros Clemens jersey in his auction. This is a retail jersey being sold as a gamer (6200 retail tagging, size 50, incorrect size #'s). I have not heard back from him.

Fake Clemens removed from Bricol auction

May 16 2005, 12:54 PM

As noted in my previous post, Bricol had a Clemens alternate Astros jersey that was a retail jersey, i.e., size 50, 6200 tagging, incorrect tackle twill numbers. I informed Brian about this, and his response is below. Brian should be congratulated on his integrity.

As a side note, what is the feeling on Lampson's letters?
Howard Wolf

Howard,

Thank you for your e-mail. The game used authenticators have varying opinions on the Majestic 0062/6200 tagging. Lou Lampson feels four teams have used the 6200 tagging and a detailed article in the 4/29/05 SCD page 72 stated the same. Others feel the 6200’s have never been used. Nevertheless, until all are in agreement we won’t be featuring any. Thank you for your feedback.

Clemens jersey

May 16 2005, 1:20 PM

So what!!??? They pulled the Clemens jersey after fairly overwhelming evidence that it wasn't game worn. What else would you expect them to do? I don't think this indicates a high level of integrity. Judging by high number of bogus items in this auction I'd say these guys are not someone I'd do business with. If they had integrity this stuff would've been verified before it went up for auction and never put on the site.

Re: Clemens jersey

May 16 2005, 1:34 PM

Paul-
Brian never claimed to be an expert in game used equipment.
As such, he depends on the so called "Experts" and he sends all of his items to either Bushing or Lampson for an inspection and letter. He is depending on their letters of authenticity and "expertise". In this case, he was contacted about a bad item and has pulled the jersey. How often have we seen bogus items in other auctions, and the item remains and is sold. In this case, what more do you want Brian to do? Remember, it had the all-important "letter of authenticity" !!!!!!

Howard is right...

May 16 2005, 1:41 PM

Brian did the right thing by pulling the Clemens shirt. What more can he do? The problem lies with the fact that a football guy is rendering his opinion on modern baseball jerseys. This underlines the importance of utilizing niche experts instead of guys who write on anything and everything. No disrespect to Lou Lampson, but I have lost count on the number of modern baseball shirts this guy has missed the ball on.

Lou Lampson's letters

May 16 2005, 1:50 PM

Rob-
My point, EXACTLY!

Brian Collard never claimed to be an expert. You will never get a "Brian Collard" letter of authenticity, rather a Lou Lampson "letter of opinion". Brian depends on Lou, as does American Memorabila, and they pay Lou for his "expertise". Rob, I too have seen handfuls of bad baseball jerseys that Lampson has written letters on. Lou may know footabll, but his knowledge of baseball is greatly lacking.

Collectors simply can't, and never should base a decision on a letter of opinion. DO YOUR HOMEWORK and spend the needed time to research the desired item.

Re: Fake Clemens removed from Bricol auction

May 16 2005, 1:30 PM

Since Brian referenced my article in SCD, I thought I should add my two cents...

It is important to reiterate that the issue with this Clemens jersey was with the wrong size numbers, not the 6200 coded wash tag. As Chris Boyd will likely confirm, there have been instances where 6200 coded Astros jerseys have shown up from both stars AND common players. 6200 or 0062, the jersey still has the wrong size numbers - that's what makes it bad.

This Clemens discussion is good for collectors to read, because there seem to be several Majestic jerseys floating around with BOTH 6200 and 0062 codes that are lettered and numbered incorrectly. This likely happens when someone finds a blank pro-coded (0062) jersey on a retail rack and letters it up using a star player's name and number. Most local shops that letter these jerseys up don't have access to the proper dimensions of the lettering and numbering of MLB teams.

The moral? Don't assume anything. Just because you see a 0062 coded wash tag doesn't mean your jersey is automatically legit - and just because you see a 6200 coded wash tag doesn't mean your jersey is automatically bad. The odds favor 0062 coded jerseys, but there some good 6200's out there. This Clemens shirt obviously wasn't one of them!

New name for this forum!!

The posts about questionable items and short-sighted authenticators out-number any other topic on this board.
I suggest a new name for this website.

Clemens in Vintage Authentics

May 16 2005, 8:20 PM

I lost a lot of respect for Vintage Authentics when I informed them about the Red Clemens jerseys with black lettering. Any on that ever watched Clemens pitch on Sunday would know the jersey was lettered bad. When I asked them about it, they asked if I was "qualified" to authenticate Astros jerseys. They obviously didn't pull it! If someone knows more of an Astros expert then me, please give them my contact info!

Thanks,

A question for Brian Collard

May 17 2005, 8:25 AM

I would like to know if the 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams card that I won in your auction that was supposedly lost was ever found? I would appreciate a response and explanation on this.
