Here's something I was thinking about.

I just read a story in Sports Illustrated about players who have their nicknames printed on their bats.

Do you have a piece in your collection that has something unique about it? It can be anything- a piece with an unusual alteration, odd tagging, a strange detail about it, a piece with a story- anything that makes it different- post a photo and tell us about it.

I always like to see what people have in their collections.
Eric

Hey Maddux......pass the relish, please!!!!

June 13 2005, 10:34 AM

A good friend was doing some catering work for the Braves back in 1996/97. Being aware of my collection of game used equipment, he inquired to several employess about the possibility of obtaining any type of game used item(s) for me. He was told about an odd habit and possible one of a kind item “used” by Greg Maddux that would definitely be unique to any collection. Thinking it was a bat, jersey or possibly a pair of shoes, he had an opportunity to see this item first hand, hanging inside of Maddux’s locker. A towel, with what appeared to be small green pieces of hamburger relish or similar substance. After inquiring, he was informed that is was known as “Greg Maddux’s Booger Towel”-basically, Maddux had a habit of picking his nose and wiping it on this towel. A simply disgusting practice, but one that was known to his teammates and those involved with the locker room activities. Needless to say, a unique item, however, one that will not be finding its way to my collection.

A Special Jersey

June 13 2005, 3:46 PM

I collect mostly MLB starting pitcher's game worn jerseys and other memorabilia and have a 2004, signed, Matt Morris home game worn jersey. Due to photomatches (looking at 15-20 photos), I am pretty sure this was the jersey Morris wore when he gave up Ken Griffey, Jr.'s 500th home run last year. A very special piece to say the least, one which I hope to post a picture of on here soon.

Clemens Jersey

June 13 2005, 4:46 PM

I know a lot of you have seen or heard this, but my Clemens 2004 Home PinStripe Jersey is probably my top piece. Anyone who hasn't seen it can view it along with a few of the photo matches at my website http://www.eGameUsed.com and then click on the "The HSI Personal Collection" at the bottom of the intro page. The jersey is signed "Roger Clemens Rocket Cy 7 2004" on the back numbers. I have found 68 photos to date of Roger wearing this piece including the following:

- 2004 All-Star Game (1 of 2 Jerseys he wore, his Mother has the 2nd)
- May 5th, 2004 Game in which Clemens passes Steve Carlton's 4137 K Mark
- Photo Session at Clemens Home in Houston, TX in which Clemens displays his 7th Cy Young Award (after season, and before I obtained the jersey)

I love sharing this info!

Thanks,

Chris Boyd

Is that relish on Bruce Hurst's jock?

June 13 2005, 6:19 PM

I’ve been collecting jersey’s for over 25 year now and I have always set out to find certain jerseys. Not necessarily stars, something unique. Here are a few of my favorites:

1) 1977 Oscar Gamble blue White Sox. Tough being that he only played one year on the Southside. Lucky enough to pick it up in 1989 at the National in Chicago (also caught a game at old Comiskey). Missed out on a white Richie Zisk a few months back. Would have been a nice pair.

2) 1987 Buddy Bell home Cincinnati Reds. Thought a Reds jersey would be nice being that his father played for them. Found it.

3) 1982 Ron Jackson home California Angels. We’ve seen baseball jersey’s with first names on the back, VIDA, ICHIRO. Remember “BOO” on Johnnie LeMaster’s Giants jersey? How about the full name on the back? It took me about ten years, but I finally found my “RON JACKSON”. I suppose he thought he would be mistaken for Reggie.

Would have posted pictures. Couldn’t’ find the link.

Picking “relish” . . . I took a tour of the “Q” in San Diego in the early 90’s. Went into the small Padres clubhouse and as you walked in, right at eye level, a jockstrap was staring at you hanging from the locker of Bruce Hurst. No doubt a joke played on us visitors by the clubhouse people. I could have swiped it and put it in my pocket I was that close.

I guess I could have sent it in to Lou Lampson to see how it would compare to other jockstraps he has inspected?

R.C.

Wade Boggs Award

June 13 2005, 8:11 PM

In 1985 I was the winner of the Wade Boggs Award. It was the only year it was ever awarded because of the Margo Adams incident in 1986. I would never sell it but it must be worth a pretty penny with Wade going into the Hall 20 years later.

Boggs Award

June 13 2005, 8:13 PM

Emil:

What was the idea behind the Wade Boggs award? Did it honor a specific area of service or something?

Can you post a picture?

Re: Boggs Award

June 14 2005, 11:19 AM

The award was given for 100% Effort. I have to look for it and I can put up a picture but it was nothing fancy. Just a trophy with a ball holder on top and a autograph ball from Wade.
The trophy was inscribed. Wade Boggs Award and underneath it said "100% Effort" If you give me your email I'll send you over a picture when I dig it out of the attic.

Huge repair

June 14 2005, 11:50 AM

This is something I posted before in a different thread. Figured it fits in here too
Eric

Just wanted to post some photos about an incredible item I just picked up from a recent American Memorabilia auction. It's a 1980s Fred Dean 49ers jersey. (I got it because he was a monster for my beloved chargers in the late 70s/early 80s.) But there is something very special about this jersey. It was cut off his body after Dean fractured his collar bone in a game. I guess the 49ers might have been cheap because it has the largest repair I have seen. It goes from the left sleeve across to the center of the shirt where it makes a right turn to the collar. Then from the collar straight down to the bottom of the shirt is one solid repair. The photos don't even illustrate how amazing this piece is. But check it out
