Paying Steiner's Yankee Prices

June 19 2005, 12:18 PM

Jon,

You bet there are people who are paying those prices. There was a post on this forum in which someone stated that they bought a jersey from the Steiner website. I also know of a couple of other people who have purchased items from Steiner/their website. I am certain that there are several big Yankees collectors with a lot of money who will buy the better items. Will some of the items fail to sell at those prices? Yes, I am equally certain of that. Some of the items will come down in price. Others will be found on eBay for less than the Steiner prices and this makes one think that Steiner sold them for less than the prices posted on their website. I'm sure there are card companies that will buy some of these items at the Steiner prices in order to cut the items up and put them in cards (and account for this type of purchase at tax time). If you are interested in those items and you don't live in a money forest, then my advice to you would be: Be patient. The prices they are asking for are mind-boggling...but if they get the prices, then that tells you something about the Yankees game used market.

Re: Paying Steiner's Yankee Prices

The problem with waiting for the prices on these items to stabilize is that while sales do not appear to be brisk through the online store, the prices achieved from their online auction seem to be consistent to say the least, and unfortunately they are consistently high. Some of their game-issued jerseys appear to get more than other teams' gamers. A helpful bit of advice is to check other auction houses which should soon be peddling Yankee gamers with the Yankee-Steiner hologram and hope for a bargain

My theory on Yankees-Steiner

June 19 2005, 9:19 PM

Here's my theory on Yankees-Steiner. I think they're not selling as much as they would have hoped.

The reason I say that is, they have been consigning many items with American Memorabilia and Grey Flannel, risking getting lower buy prices than the Yankees-Steiner website. If the stuff was selling at their prices, then they would make Yankees-Steiner the only place to buy them and you'd have to pay the high prices.

Any thoughts on this theory?

Steiner Yankees

That sounds reasonable. I have subjected to the Steiner plea to buy an $800 signed Jeter jersey, the same one you can buy on Ebay for $400. As with many sports memorabilia marketers, they have tried to create a market through additional inscriptions ("First jersey of Spring Training," "First Home-run of the year, etc." and they are finding that the goose can lay only so many golden eggs.

Still, you CAN buy some unique Steiner items if you want them badly enough.

I'm sure you're right, Dan.

Dan,

It just cannot be the case that they are selling as many as they would have liked to at those prices, I agree. But they are definitely selling some of them. The prices are outrageous...and even selling just "some" at those prices is impressive to me!
