Real Schmidt Jacket

With all the talk of the Pete Rose jacket on lelands, I wanted to share something from my collection. It's a mid 1980s Mike Schmidt jacket. It comes with a letter from a man who did shoe repairs for Schmidt and the Phillies and got the jacket as a thank you from Mike.

I'll add photos later tonight, but it matches this...

Nice to see a real Phillies superstar jacket with photo proof

June 27 2005, 12:05 PM

Eric-
This basic style of jacket was worn from the mid 1970's through 1999. The photo you included is actually from Schmidt's final season, 1989 (it can be dated by noting the grey pants Schmidt is wearing-the Phillies introduced the grey for their road jerseys in 1989, Schmidt's final season). Also note that the name on the back of the jacket is not vertical arch, rather block letters. The Phillies switched to Rawlings knit jackets in 1987, and also went to the basic block lettering names on back.

Eric, great photo you have provided. This is the same evidence both the Forum readers and I am seeking from Josh Evans and Mike Heffner at Lelands to support their claim that the 1983 Pete Rose jacket in their auction is genuine and game worn. If indeed Rose wore a Starter brand jacket (while the other Phillies members wore Wilson brand)with a number on the breast (as opposed to the other Phillies players jackets not having numbers on the breast), there must be a photo of him in it. Where is the photo? As pospular as Rose was in 1983, and as many photos that were shot of him during the World Series season of 1983, why have we not seen a photo produced of either Rose or for that matter, any Phillies palyer wearing a Starter jacket with the number on the breast?

As a siide note, what did Lelands/Josh/Mike use to determine the Rose jacket they just sold was a team issued, game worn jacket? No doubt they must have some sort of evidence/proof to make such a claim, and sell it as a gamer?

Correction to Phillies jacket

June 27 2005, 12:07 PM

Whoops-sorry-this style was actually discontinued in 1989/1990. Not 1999 as I noted earlier. Sorry for the sloppy typing.

What a real Phillies jacket should look like

June 28 2005, 6:53 AM

Eric-
You have a PERFECT Schmidt gamer. This was in my friends collection for a few years in Cherry Hill, NJ and he decided to sell it. Everything about it is correct-name on back, size 44, etc.
The Phillies would most often strip the nameplate off the back and reissue them in the minor leagues. This particular jackat was spared!

A great item
