Owen-
I subscribed to it for a couple of years, however, could not stomach reading it and allowed my subscription to laps.
Not only is his information a smattering of subjects, it is basically a one page Xerox of old newspaper clippings, baseball cards and articles from other publications. It appears Dave does not own a computer, as he hand writes most of his info, making it even a more difficult read. Likewise, he sends the newsletter in old, recycled envelopes with the original return address crossed out and his hand written return added.
As most collectors know, Dave was dismissed by SCD, and enjoys filling his newsletter with shots at this publication. Likewise, he was taking shots at Busing and Knoll for years, until recently. He indicated he was now teaming with them and would be assisting in writing letters of authenticity. Combine this hypocritical stance with his amateurish newsletter that looks like it was produced on a broken Xerox at the local A&P (many of the photos are completely black, and you have no idea what was suppose to be shown), and I would suggest saving your $12.00 and pass on a subscription. Or better yet, send Dave the $12.00 and suggest he enter the year 2005 and purchase a computer.
I think you will find this is what Dave wrote in his newsletter with respect to his role with MEARS:
..."The role of yours truly with the company will continue, at this time, to be as a researcher and supports staff member compiling data for the MEARS game-used database, ever-growing and currently approaching 13,000 photo entries... far more than any other total publicized by any other private or corporate authenticator. I will continue to sit in on some (not all) authentication sessions, though, again, my role will be to research, and not to sign off on any LOA's as an official authenticator... that will still be the province of Messrs. Bushing and Knoll, among others. Even in a research role, some of the items viewed can be intriguing, and research can be a tool that helps the authenticators accept or reject an item..."
The other thing I like and have liked about Dave, is he has not been above taking some of our folks to task on issues in public and he certainly does not have an issue with doing it in private. As I have said before, I seldom if ever, am on site when work is being done. I like the fact that we have someone working with us who is not affraid the voice a difference of opinion to either an internal or external audiances.
Dave-
I just read your response to my post and can't stop shaking my head and laughing!
Any response to my information about Miedema's rag-tag "newsletter"?
Miedema has written and spoken at length about how Bushing's letters are a joke, and also provided numerous examples in his newsletter about how an item with a Bushing letter is fake, or incorrectly identified (i.e., a shirt may be from 1980, but the letter reads 1988). Take a look at his past issues of Uniformity if you need additional examples of the "Bushing Bashing".
You continue to defend Bushing/MEARS, even when he has been proven to provide letters that are not accurate or factual. Now, Miedema joins up with you and you have an instant love for him. How can you possibly write that you "like the fact that you have someone working with us who is not afraid the voice (sic) a difference of opinion.."? We all enjoy a difference of opinion, but befriending a person who was on a one-man crusade against SCD Authentic and in particular, Bushing? What can you be thinking, Dave Grob? What color is the sky in your world? Not only does the hobby consider Miedema a complete hypocrite for joining up with you, one must also now include you with him.

Gridiron Greats (gridirongreats.net) is a quartlerly print magazine about vintage football history and memorabilia (cards, autographs, autographs, bios of old timers). It is a small magazine but with a strong reputation amongst football fans-- MastroNet recommended it and subsribers and contributers include more than one Hall of Famer. While it has not yet had articles of game used, it has had nice articles on early equipment. I bring this up because if a board memeber wanted to submit a good article on vintage game used football material, the publisher would likely publish it. Frank Rose (publisher/editor) is always looking for a good general interest article.
If I had wished to comment on Dave's newsletter I would have. "Befriending or loving" someone has nothing to do with why Dave is with us in the capacity he is.
I also think, in an objective business sense, if you are having problems with a certain aspect of your business, why not leverage the knowledge of the person is pointing it out? Just so we are clear, I think you will find that some of the errors that Dave M. attributed to Dave Bushing, were actually made by another authenticator working under his own company and name. For me it was not a matter of who was making the error, but was catching it.
I am curious, since you have stated that "hobby" must now include me as well as being hypocritical as well, please explain? I have never had anything bad to say about Dave M so how could supporting him be hypocritical?
I subscribed for one year, then dropped out. "Fanzines" of this type were great in the seventies, when we were writing about our favorite punk band, and xerox art was all the rage, but in the 21st century, there is, in my mind, SIMPLY NO EXCUSE to not deliver this type of product electronically. If "Uniformity" was a digital mag, I might still be a subscriber.
