That gunk

That gunk is pine tar and they probably don't want it cleaned because they are superstious. Especailly with Vladi because he doesn't wear batting gloves.

How about Biggio? My favorite, though, is Orlando Cabrera. When the Red Sox picked him up last season, it wasn't but a day or two before his helmet looked that way. After two days, and you can't even see the B on the helmet? Now that is pine tar fanaticism. Actually, the Red Sox, as a team, are known for this.

Reid, You beat me to it!

October 5 2005, 9:14 AM

Reid,

You beat me to my man Biggio. Believe it or not, Biggio wore the same helmet from 1994 to 1999. THE SAME HELMET! The only reason he changed was because the team changed logos and colors. The helmet had 2 cracks, one in the left hear flap and one near the back, but he is so superstitous he couldn't change. I have heard a lot of stories about other players hiding the helmet. Apparently, it got left in Houston on a 6 game road trip sometime in 1997. Biggio went like 1 for 19 in the series.

The helmet was auctioned off at the 2000 Astros Wives Gala. I left with a silent bid of over $8,000 for the piece. I was expecting a phone call the next day. No phone call! The Helmet went for over $10,000. It is probably sitting in some lawyers office closet. Oh well!

Has anyone heard about Jay Buhner and his pine tar pants???
