Leather and Patina

As we all know, finding the perfect shade of tan is difficult. And even when you find the perfect colour hide, as it ages, it will darken from sunlight, the oils from your skin, water and whatever else you throw at it.

I've made a few straps recently and this pic shows an interesting tale...

These three straps are made from the same hide, believe it or not. The one on the left is brand new and never worn (not even had the holes punched). It is about as virgin as you can get.

The strap next to it was made over the last weekend. I rubbed some dubbin into it (two coats) and removed the excess and wore it for the first time yesterday.

The strap on the right was made a month ago, two coats of dubbin but a full month of daily wear.

Pretty amazing how the environment (and a bit of help) can change a strap.

And then there's the Horween strap I finished up yesterday to the right here. Even as it ages, we won't be able to tell cuz it's a dark burgundy colour.
