We are a group of friends who have come together because we share the common bond of caring for someone who has Trisomy 21. We are here to share therapy tips, medical issues, laughs, accomplishments and yes, even frustrations. We embrace what Trisomy 21 has brought into our lives. We feel that it has taught us to appreciate the true meaning of life. We count our children as blessings! We will fiercely protect them and fight for their lives to be valued just as all other peoples' are. We share our pictures, our stories and our hearts here not only to provide friendship and support for each other, but also in the hopes that others will open their minds and their hearts to our unique children and, in turn, make a better world for everyone.

Reading Levels Chart

December 6 2007 at 5:47 PM

As so many different schools have different reading levels/books, even in Nash's class they are using two different systems, so I found this chart that I love and thought I would share. It helps me know where the goals should be set reading level wise for IEP's and where he should be next month as we have the IEP leveled at 8 week intervels.

so FYI

Is anyone else using Rigby in addition to the FP levels?

How are you setting reading goals?

February 9 2008, 5:56 AM

We just had a discussion about this at Shawen's IEP. They've been using dibels, but we had a discussion about that - it's fluency, not comprehension. Anyway, Shawen's dibels score went from 22 at a 2.2 grade level to 46 at a 2.2 grade level in December, but they dropped back down to 26 in January, but he was reading text at a 2.5 grade level.

How are you writing Nash's reading goals?

Tamara

Re: Reading Levels Chart

I think the Rigby scale is what they use for Kallie as well. Like I get papers that say she is reading at a 1st grade student in the 10th month of school, something like that.

Her goal reads like this....

When given a grade level appropriate reading passage, Kallie will be able to answer comprehension questions at a 6 months progression of skill level with 75% accuracy. It is broken down into 4 short term goals as well.

Kallie is still mostly reading by site words and I am still pressing the issue of her reading phonetically, I hope she makes that transition soon!

Reading

February 13 2008, 8:50 AM

My son Joe is 7 and in 1st Grade. We are using a phonics based program called Reading Mastery. It is incredible! This is our 2nd full year in the program and
Joe has improved not only in his reading but in speech and writing as well!
Many schools use this as their only reading program.
It is a McGraw-Hill program.

As our IEP approaches next month I am in need of some IEP goals that support his work in the typical classroom. Any ideas?
