Ok, so my fourteen month old just had a speech therapist come out and decided that for right now he dosen't need speech. She said that He is where a "normal" 15 month old would be right now, and then some. Soooo, I was talking about it to another T21 mom, and she was just appaled by that. She said that it was horrible, and that they all need speech so why not start now. He has a very large vocabulary, Mama, Dada, Mwhahahahaha(from halloween, his brother was a monster and was always doing that to him), baba, no, and the latest HO HO HO, so what do you think, should I push for speech? He dosen't have any problems with a big tounge, tonsils, adnoids, or tounge thrusting...everything is good there...look forward to some opinions!!!Pam and Rhett
is that it sounds like he is doing great!! My child was by no means saying those at 15 months. Emma is my first child, but the one thing I have learned is to follow my gut. If it really is just a friend or acquaintice who is insisting, and you think he is doing fine, then I would keep it as is. Have you read Libby Kumin's work? She has some really good books on speech and Down syndrome.
Hi,
My daugther Molli went thorough the same thing, although for her they did'nt start until her second bithday. And when I asked about it thorough the Dr.'s office the case worker told me,that dr.'s ,parents and theripests all think differently, and to wait it out
Garrett was similar. He was making the sounds when he was younger, but then he just kept making those same sounds, even with ST coming out here to our house for 3 years. We truly did not see a big difference until he started preschool at 3 (last year) he's 4 now. He has speech 2 times a week at school, and they are working really hard with him. So many words he can say fine, but there are certain combos that he just can't yet. He must say at least 150 words now; we did find that signing with him helped a ton. Now he's pretty much dropped the signs, unless he sees we are having trouble understanding him.
I must be on a signing push tonight- but I would recommend that you sign nw to your baby to improve general communication- I just wrote a longer post on the general forum re this-and our experiences wht out two year old.
well my daughter is only 2 months old but i know when the time comes regardless if she needs it or not i am going to put her through all the therapy available for a child with down syndrome.. i look at it this way whether she needs it or not at least it will benefit her even more and prevent issues that could possibly arise..
