We are a group of friends who have come together because we share the common bond of caring for someone who has Trisomy 21. We are here to share therapy tips, medical issues, laughs, accomplishments and yes, even frustrations. We embrace what Trisomy 21 has brought into our lives. We feel that it has taught us to appreciate the true meaning of life. We count our children as blessings! We will fiercely protect them and fight for their lives to be valued just as all other peoples' are. We share our pictures, our stories and our hearts here not only to provide friendship and support for each other, but also in the hopes that others will open their minds and their hearts to our unique children and, in turn, make a better world for everyone.

Hi< I am a mom of 3. My youngest is Kaylee and she is 16 months now. I was just wondering if anyone could let me know what the ave. walking time is and when your child started walking. Kaylee is beautiful and is everything a mom could ask for. I just want to make sure I am the best mom Kaylee could ask for. I do have an OT who comes to help every month and Kaylee is almost ready to crawl. I just hope I am doing everything right. I am just not sure when the walking will start I am thinking around two. I was just wondering what others found with their children
Thanks Karen

Hi Karen,

August 6 2007, 10:57 AM

I'm Vicki, mom to Aaron. He is 8 years old now. I don't think this part of the board is very active and didn't want you to think your post is being ignored. You might try posting on the "General Forum" part. It is the first one under T21 Forums to the left in red.

Aaron was 17 months when he walked, but that is considered pretty early for a child with Down Syndrome. From what I've heard the average age for a child with DS is 2 years, but many of our children don't walk until 3 or after. It is not a reflection of how they will learn other things, Each child just walks when they are ready. I know Aaron is very motor driven and I think thats why he was a little earlier than some.

I hope to see you more and get to know you. THis is a great community with lots of support and knowledge.

Vicki and Aaron, 7 years old

Walking

Hi Karen...It sounds like Kaylee's on track, but always remember that you can request more service delivery at times when you're feeling unsure about your child's development or at critical learning times. This may be one of those for Kaylee. Is the OT coming in through Early Intervention services? Is so, then you can ask for a review of your IFSP and request more or different service (it may be good to have a physical therapist see her too). I bet you're doing amazing things at home with her to motivate her - Therapists are there to give you tips and strategies for those times when they're not there but if you need more reinforcement then call them in.
