The hockey, like everything else in Mastro, did quite well. I thought the $30,000+ price tag for the C55 Mastro set was extremely high. That is almost $750 a card. The Vezina was "only" a 5. The set is not even the best one out there.
A little while ago an SGC 10 sold for $375 for the Vezina rookie, Last night a card even worse with a corner missing sold for $200+, If I remember a while back on eBay a PSA 3 I believe sold for $1100USD so I'd guess a 5 could bring in close to $2000USD.
Ray,
You should talk to Mark. I know he used to track prices of C55's and might have a list of PSA 5 Vezina's that might have sold. SMR on a 4 is 1900 and I picked up my Vezina PSA 4 for a decent amount under SMR which, if I recall, Mark and others thought was a very good deal. I think Andrew's price of $2000 is probably a little light for a 5. I would guess if you could get one for around $2500 you should be happy.
I'm still keeping track of c55 prices although I've just about got my set the way I want it. There has not been a PSA5 Vezina on ebay in the last 2+ years. Hear are the hgh end cards that have been on and their prices:
SGC70 - $3339.99 - 9/30/04
SGC60 - $3400 - 9/18/05
PSA3 - $1525 - 8/21/04
SGC40 - $1600 - 4/14/06
Raw - looked VG-EX by the scan - $1725.00 - 6/21/05
PSA2 - $711 - 5/19/05
PSA1 - $504 - 9/12/04
8 additional raw cards none better than good ranging from $1055 to $255 (it was obviously trimmed).
I bought a raw one last year from Dolloff for $1650 that graded a 4 - the scan is on my registry set (#6 and sinking fast).
A five would bring serious bidding and go for over $3000 IMO.
Many of us who collect vintage hockey, like any other collectors, ultimately wonder what our collection is worth on the open market. The Mastro C55 set gave us a glimpse of this. We all know that a set, although the time and cumulative value is worth more, will ultimately sell for less than the sum of its parts (due to time and effort to sell individually, difficulty in selling commons vs. HOFers and stars, etc.). The question then is $30,000+ too much for the current finest C55 set? If you break down the cards, here's what I come up with:
7 PSA 7's: current market is $1200-$1500 per card; assuming an average of $1350/card, total is $9450
1 GAI 7 (Art Ross): about $2500 (assuming it would crossover to a PSA 7)
10 PSA 6 HOFers: about $750/card, total is $7500
9 PSA 6 commons: about $500/card, total is $4500
7 PSA 5 commons/semi-stars: about $300/card, total is $2100
PSA 5 Joe Malone: $600
PSA 5 Geores Vezina: $3000
PSA 5 Newsy Lalonde: $900
The total thusfar is $30,550. I still haven't included the off-centered cards, the GAI 5 Dunderdale, or any PSA 4 or below card. Although this amount to be paid at one time is prohibitive for most collectors, ultimately I think that the buyer did well. I would love to upgrade my set with a bunch of those PSA 7's if I had that buying power at one time. I'm sure that some will see my estimates and either go "huh? That's way too much" or "I would buy that card if someone would sell it to me at that price!"
