I have a SGC 96 Gordie Howe RC. This is the only mint 9 in SGC and PSA has one 9 in a tightly held collection. What do you think its worth? I'm not thinking of selling it but if I was were would be the best place to do it?

Howe RC

My experience is somewhat limited, but I have sent a few SGC cards to PSA and they all crossed over at the same grade. You could submit your card to PSA to see if you can get a 9. (You could state that PSA 9 is your minimum grade, then in case it doesn't get a PSA 9 you will still get it back in the SGC holder.)

I would imagine that a Howe RC in the SGC holder would still draw a lot of attention from bidders. I don't know much about the auction houses myself, but they seem to bring in the real high bidders for the highest grade cards. The Howe rookie is still one of the more popular hockey cards, and I'm sure that yours would attract a lot of attention.

SGC 9 Howe

The 51-52 Parkhurst Howe appeals to not only the rookie card collectors, but also to the post-war vintage collectors and to those who are trying to put that set together. Moreover, most of us would consider it (see previous thread) one of the top 10 important cards in hockey. The tricky thing with high-graded cards (especially with the small segment of vintage hockey collectors) is that depending on the day and avenue of selling, I would suspect that a PSA/SGC 9 would go for about $25,000-$40,000. This is based on the going rate for a PSA 8 of $5,000-$7,000 with a multiplier of 4-5X for top end material. Also remember, that there are less high-end vintage hockey collectors and thus a smaller pool of combatants. Of course, it only takes 2 passionate (i.e. idiot) collectors to push the price up. If I were considering selling such a card, I would think about Robert Edward Auctions, Mastronet, Memory Lane, or Mile High Card to maximize the potential. The other route is to put it out (B/S/T thread or ebay) in order to see what the prospective interest would be. Great card no matter what happens to it.

do you really don't know what it is worth?

YOu own the 1/2 PSA/SGC 9 and you don't know what it's worth? Did you buy it once or was it at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box?

What I paid for the gordie howe

November 26 2006, 8:59 PM

I paid 15k from BMW for the SGC 9 gordie howe SMR price is 11250 and SGC price before they took it down was 15k. The PSA 9 Gordie Howe is in tight hands from what I understand. However I asked the question because price guides are not always good and everyone on this board seems to know more than I do. Signed Greg
