What would you rather have a c55 cyclone taylor or a c55 newsy lalonde. Both are the same grade. And dare I ask which one is worth more,at mid to high grade levels. Of course which one is more desirable.
I have always been a fan of Cyclone Taylor. I recently acquired on of his rookie cards and it is one of my all time favorite cards in my collection!
That being said, Newsy Lalonde was an amazing player, who got a lot of respect from Taylor. I think that they both played the same position, and both were prolific scorers in their day.
The only thing that can be said for the Lalonde RC over the Taylor, is that the Lalonde is the last card in the set, so it is extremely tough to find in nice shape.
I just know that Cyclone Taylor has been called hockey's first superstar, if that makes a difference.
Earl,my question was about the c55 not c56 cards for lalonde vs. taylor. I dont think it makes any difference to you does it? What do you think about the rarity of the lalonde vs. taylor.
If I really desired both cards equally but had funds for only one, I would buy the Lalonde.
When I am faced with this dilemma, I look at the POP reports. ( I will assume you are buying PSA cards )
Current POP reports
Taylor: PSA 5 x 8, PSA 6 x 11, PSA 7 x 1, PSA 8 x 1. 42 total graded.
Lalonde: PSA 5 x 17 and PSA 6 x 6. none higher. 50 total graded.
I would bet some of those 5's have been cracked out looking for the 6.
With nearly twice as many Taylor's in 6 out there, the chances of one hitting the market down the road
are far greater than a Lalonde, unless the pop's have been skewed by cards being cracked out.
Also, the Lalonde is the highest graded example with none higher.
While the SMR is only a guide, both cards are listed with the same values for the grade.
PSA 5 $925 and PSA 6 $1400
1) Rarity: push
2) Availability: Lalonde
3) Kick-Ass jersey: push (I love those old Canadiens jerseys, but the Renfrew Millionaires are quite distinctive)
4) Price: Taylor
5) Historical significance: push
6) Haunting face that almost looks like a painting/artwork: Lalonde
7) Coolness of the nickname: "Cyclone" Taylor
For me, I consider Taylor #1 and Lalonde #1A (but it changes on any given day).
John--Nice analysis of the Taylor vs. Lalonde question.
I think I now have my answer: neither.
If I had the money I would buy a C55 Joe Malone RC and a C55 Joe Hall RC. I would rather have those 2 rookies than either of the other 2nd year cards. I do like the look of the C55 Lalonde and Taylor, but I'm more into rookie cards myself.
