Which Hall of Famer averaged a hat trick a game in his 45 regular season and playoff games and did not register even 1 assist over his short career? Jim.

This must be a trick question....did he get into the HOF as a builder or coach?

He got in as a player. Here's a clue. He played pre-NHL. Jim.

Not Joe Malone. Another clue. Holds the record for most goals in a Stanley Cup game. Jim.

Pre-War Hockey

Thusfar, this is what my research has shown:

(1) Most playoff goals in one NHL: 5 (Lalonde, Richard, Sittler, Leach, Lemieux)

(2) Most playoff goals in single playoff game: 9 (Joe Malone) vs. Sydney Millionaires 1913

(3) Closest that I can come up with is Marty Walsh with 84 total goals in 45 total games (playoffs and regular season) in NHA games only (no assists)

"One Eyed" Frank McGee of the Ottawa Silver Seven is correct. 14 goals in a Stanley Cup game against the Dawson City Nuggets.

I've been reading up on a few Hall of Famers lately and noticed his goals per game total and that he did not have 1 assist in 45 games. Did they keep track of assists back then? Jim.

Assists

Weren't forward passes against the rules back then ? Maybe it was only in the offensive zone. Perhaps they didn't count assists at all.

Assists

While reading the Cyclone Taylor biography, I read that assists were not recorded when he started around 1907 or 08. This continued through most of his career. That was why you didn't see any assists recorded.

It's true that long forward passes were illegal in the early days also, but obviously there was plenty of passing that led to goals. I'm not sure when assists were eventually counted.

Great trivia question, Jim. It would have taken a while to find that answer.

Earl

Assists weren't recorded until 1918-19, the second NHL season.
Newsy Lalonde was assists leader, had 9 of them in 17 games.
