Hello. Longtime browser finally decided to join. I collect only vintage hockey with the exception of high end Gretzky cards. Looking forward to joining the wonderful conversations here. I'm 31 yrs. old but have been collecting cards since 7th grade without interruption. I mainly collected baseball when I first started but have been drawn to vintage hockey over the last 3 or 4 years and that's all I collect. Here's the jewel of my collection. Thanks.
Welcome to this forum. I'm a pre-war collector myself, but I would definitely swing the other way for a card like your PSA 10 Dryden rookie. I hope that you gain as much knowledge as you contribute.
Damir,
I joined this forum back in the summer, and it has really been growing at a steady rate for a while now. It's great to add more people so that the opinions will remain diverse and interesting.
I can't say that I have ever seen a PSA 10 Dryden rookie. That's really an amazing card!
Thanks Earl. There is only 1 PSA 10 Dryden from each of the Topps and OPC series. Thare are over 500 submissions of my Topps version which should tell you how hard these are in Gem Mint grade. Definitely something worth holding on to for a very long time.
yes amazing card but i have questions. How much is the value of your topps 10 dryden? and the opc dryden psa 10 ? according to you how much is the value of this 2 amazing card?
thx
I'm sure that there isn't any way to say what the value of either of these cards since there is only 1 of each and there won't be many, if any, sales to check against. I would say that these cards are worth as much as someone is willing to pay. That may be a coward's answer, but I could say $10,000 and someone would say that it's way too low.
Does anyone have an estimate? (Not that it matters, since they probably aren't for sale!)
Well......regarding my opc gem mint dryden card, it all depends if I can get a couple of montreal millionaire canadian fans bidding on it at the same time ..... well the sky's the limit...the price I paid for it I beleive was a steal.......I was prepared to go MUCH higher for this card...happily I didn't have to....
Bob, the Dryden is not for sale. It is part of my personal collection with some of my pre-war stuff. I mainly collect to keep, rather than selling for a profit the first chance I get. I love the history of the sport and the cards that come with it. The great thing about vintage is that it hardly ever goes down (great for the seller, bad for the buyer). I STRONGLY believe vintage hockey will go to another level in the years ahead. Just looking at the sales of high grade commons tells you we are moving ahead nicely. I remember the OPC Dryden on Mastro and couldn't believe what a deal it was when it closed. The Bobby Orr 1971 Topps PSA 10 (population 2) just sold for $3000+ earlier tonight on Ebay. I know my Topps issue is worth alot, but the OPC version would probably double it. This is the great thing about high-end 1 of 1 cards, you should never be surprised at the final sale. Thanks.
Damir I strongly agree with what your saying...when I got that Dryden for only 3550 US I was astounded??? I really thought it would go double that and then some???
And yes you are right...whenever you buy classic cards, the only way they will go is up......all I buy is ever old stuff.....though I have not yet delved into pre war stuff at this point....
<<I mainly collected baseball when I first started but have been drawn to vintage hockey over the last 3 or 4 years and that's all I collect. Here's the jewel of my collection. Thanks.>>
<<And I have the PSA 10 OPC Ken Dryden rookie....>>
No James I didn't mean it like that and I hope it didn't come off as oneupmanship.........Just kinda cool to see both 10's from each set on the same thread....
Welcome Damir. I've only been around here for a couple of months but can vouch for the quality of the content here; not so much the quantity but I think that can be attributed to the fact that if your favorite player is Howie Morenz or Cyclone Taylor (or Milt Schmidt ?!?) you are probably at that stage in life where you don't make it much past 9:00 PM most nights. Nice Dryden(s) (you'll have to take my word for it that for me to say anything remotely nice about that sob (see my login id) is high praise indeed). But I must say my jaw dropped when I saw that report on the Orr card; that is absolutely unbelievable, how a $40 card can be worth 100X that because someone has (arbitrarily ?) assigned it a number. I agree with you that the market looks strong and those high grade commons are good indicators but I wonder if these other one-of-a-kinds (or maybe "extremely low pop") should even be considered when assessing the strength of the hobby. I mean, do the people that are buying these things not take into consideration the fact that they suddently might NOT own the highest graded example of a given card ? I understand that in both of your cases you are passionate collectors and have no intention of selling (and that you apparently paid reasonable amounts for them) but for someone who is maybe leaning more to the investment side of things, don't you think it is a huge risk ? Maybe that's a better question for Greg - you seem confident that that Vezina will only appreciate but what happens if the SGC100 or PSA10 suddenly shows up ? Or another 96 or two. Unlikely yes, and yours is probably a bad example because of it's extreme rarity, but at least in the case of that Orr, for example, I think it's reasonable to assume that over time we will see more of those (especially given the run on shoe boxes that will no doubt occur once people see those prices being realized); and who is going to pay $3500 for one when there are 10 or 12 of them ? Maybe I am off base, but it seems to me that someone putting out that kind of money is not doing it because they are (at least primarily) a Bobby Orr fan; they are doing it because they believe that the (contrived ?) rarity of that card will ensure that it will at least maintain that value and probably appreciate. I would think that is a very risky proposition, maybe not so much for the Vezina, but definitely for a card like that.
Now if only the centering were a little better on this one (OPC!):
I bid huge (or so I thought) on the Orr 10 last night and was astounded by the closing price. I ended up 4th highest bidder. So at least 4 of us bid to win. I figured if I won the Orr we could work out a deal on the Dryden because they both belong here:
Al, it's all a gamble. This to me is the funnest way of gambling. If another Dryden poped up a PSA 10 I'm sure mine would not lose much if anything at all. There are always many people who will pay astronomical dollars for a gem mint of a star rookie regardless of the sport. I think that many are surprised that the Gretzky OPC and Topps rookies have only one of each graded PSA 10 to date and have had thousands of submissions of each issue. The OPC saw $80.000 late last year and I wonder what the price would be if 2 or 3 more 10's popped up. To me this is the fun part of having high end 1 of 1's, you just don't know what is going to happen.
Elmar, what I meant was that I have ,as well as many others, some older stuff that was not worth alot back in the day but am getting a big dollar for now. I think if you hold on to vintage long enough you as the seller can make out like a thief on some transactions. I've noticed with a couple of my friends that they for some reason pay big money for a card or cards and months later have a sudden urge to sell for whatever reason. This is when you lose, even on vintage. I notice some of the sales for hockey in the summer is not like the sales it brings in the winter when people's minds are focused around the sport. I bought many Gretzky 1 of 1's in the summer for dirt cheap and some are going for $100-175 now.
As for as getting OWNED by the OPC Dryden, I didn't take it that way because I know the people on this forum are genuine about the hobby. I'm glad you showed it because I love looking at high end stuff. Maybe we can start a thread just for posting our favorite vintage cards so we can all see what's out there. Personaly ,I can never get enough of vintage hockey cards regardless of the grade. Thanks.
I understood what you meant. What I meant is it doesn't matter if you are the seller or buyer. If you hold on vintage cards long enough you'll sell them for a big profit anyway. Sometimes sellers also can't wait and like you said have a sudden urge to sell for whatever reason.
As for as <<Maybe we can start a thread just for posting hign end vintage>>
I have an idea. Please wait for my next thread (I hope some time tonight).
Thanks for the kind words on the set guys. Honestly I just referenced it so Damir would call me first if he ever decides to sell his Dryden.
As for my favorite card in the set I really love the Orr card. I'm extremely disappointed I didn't win the 10.
I'm also fond of a couple of the golie cards in the set. Of course the Dryden but also the Tony O and the Parent are great shots too.
Note: The Bruins seem to have whipped together an impromptu photo shoot for the 71 set. Check the Hodge, Espo, Cashman etc. cards. They all seem to be wearing #17 gloves, holding the same stick and just threw their sweater on over their street clothes.
Thanks Damir.....that Dryden is my pride and joy and I always enjoy a chance to show it to people....along with my PSA 9 71/72 opc nhl #111 checklist....indeed, the whole 71/72 opc nhl set is my fav and I am working on building the # 1 set.....I have about 80 High Grade Raw I have to still send in for grading....
The last 71 OPC Dryden in a PSA 8 went for $493.00. A 9 OPC would go for about $1500-$2000. There are only 9 9's in PSA population.
A PSA 9 Topps would be about $300-$500.
The price guides do not help much when certain cards are rarely offered for sale. Hope that helps.

thanks guy for you information. now do you know a place where i have 1 of these 2 card for sale? i am interested principaly on the opc but the topps can perhaps interest me.
These 2 cards in a 9 don't show up often. You might have to wait a while for an auction, but if you call a few places I'm sure someone will have one at a set price. I'll definitely let you know if I see any of them.

BMW has an OPC SGC 96 Dryden rookie listed in their ebay store for $3400.
I don't know if you want to spend that kind of money on this card, but I can tell you from past experience that BMW has sold me SGC cards with the stipulation that I only had to purchase them if they successfully crossed over to the same grade at PSA. This is actually how I got my Phil Esposito rookie in PSA 9 as it was originally in an SGC 96 holder from BMW.
Devon only paid $150 more for his Dryden in a PSA 10, I would rather wait as long as I have to for one to show up at auction, $3,400 for a POSSIBLE 9 is a bit risky and a bit high.
