hi geo vezina, the book is not anything like the beckett.the beckett is ok for pricing for individual cards but the vintage hockey collector reflects on important information/photos and the history of each product. it also does give general pricing on most items but not every individual card. i know you would love the book as it was produced for hard core vintage guys like you. believe me you will not be dissapointed if you get one. and yes of course it is a real book,it was released in november 2006 at the toronto expo show. i think the author of the book sold about close to a 1000 copies so far,so they are around.
hi brad, that is the book i am talking about buy one you will enjoy it. great info, unbelievable photos and history on every card issue like topps-opc-parkhurst and tobacco cards/food/premiums/wrappers/display boxes/packs and a lot of oddball stuff.
I'm through the first 30 or so pages, just got it. It's organized chronologically and covers more than just cards. So far it's great, I love the fact that every page is full-color glossy, and what an amazing amount of great pics ! I don't think it is or was intended primarily as a price guide, (especially since it catalogues a lot of stuff that would be next to impossible to price), although estimates/opinion of prices are given. I am not overly familiar with the pre-war stuff so soaking up every page so far. Nice work Bobby.
I'm pretty sure it's considered a disease when I am constantly searching for books on what I collect. There's not much out there when it comes to pre-war hockey cards. Therefore, Bobby's book along with his vintage wax guide are bibles to me. If vintage hockey continues to grow in popularity, I would point to Bobby and this book as pioneers in the cataloging and dissemination of its history. Lots of the information and pictures can't be found anywhere else. To me, it's worth a lot more than $50 (but don't tell Bobby that, it'll just make future editions stratospheric in issue price). I would agree that its worth is far more in its information and pics than as a price guide. However, for many, many things that are in it, there's no other place to find a ballpark figure in case you're buying or selling. I highly, highly, highly recommend it!! Bobby obviously pours his heart and soul into it. Thanks, Bobby.
