For pre-war there are to few cards for the market to be all that consistent since you don't see many of the same cards come up in the same time period.
A low SMR usually helpful for buyers in my experience because ....to be frank ....many dabblers in this hobby use that price guide to set their ceiling bids.
When I first heard about the SMR a number of years ago, the prices were overly high. Dealers were quoting SMR prices since they were so much higher than Beckett. (This was for 50's and 60's cards.) Over the past 10 years prices have incresed, but SMR prices haven't. You don't hear dealers quoting SMR prices as often today since it doesn't serve their interests.
Most of the time SMR prices for vintage cards are way too low. If you can buy vintage cards at those prices, jump at it. But don't expect to win a lot of auctions at that price!
Most Roy PSA 9 OPC rookies have sold between $198 and $230 the past four or five months. One actually sold for $400 with the third high bidder being at $330. I cannot figure that sale out.
A PSA 10 84-85 Gretzky sold for $600 in early January.
