Hi there, thanks to all those who posted on my introductory message.
here i went and bought my first graded vintage card.
but i might have overpaid for it. i am not sure. Because i was checking the SMR guide, cards from C55 sells for way over the guide price. While this is way below. So pls let me know if this is the going rate.
Because i simply have no way at the moment if i should or should not follow the SMR price guide when i buy these cards. Since i am a rookie
Dave, don't even use the SMR for pricing. Their prices are WAY off for vintage hockey. Maybe someone who collects that set can chime in as to whether you paid too much for it, but I believe that it is the right price if you are happy paying for it. Thanks
The Clancy card lists in the Annual Beckett for $1000. I don't collect this set, but I know that many cards of pre war hall of famers sell fairly high on a regular basis. I can't see how the price you paid would be called too high.
I think you made a good deal on a sweet looking card.
That is a very strong purchase for your entry into graded vintage. Trust me, there is no going back now..
That is actually a very nice PSA 5. It is also IMO the best colour combination ( blue and white ) for the Clancy. I actually have a couple of 33 OPC's from this same submission of AJ's, they are both 4's. I have had them for at least 2 yr's if not longer. They as well look to be strong for their given grades aside from some wax staining on the backs.
Also, it looks like AJ's is becoming a little more flexible on their prices and may actually be ready to sell some cards.
Here is a scan of one of mine from the same submission.
i think you over paid. patience will save you a lot of money. i suggest always looking for an open auction rather to buy it straight out with a dealer. i know through experience that if that card was on ebay as an open 'no reserve' auction you would have gotten that card for a lot less. sometimes luck is a big part of scoring good deals too and timing could make or break a deal (example if there are a lot of guys wanting the same card on the auction that week,it will drive the card up,if not-it could be bought for a deal). what i do is keep a percentage in mind for a certain grade and then bid accordingly for the vintage card with the auction open and bid always near the end of the auction so you do not drive the price of the card up. these opinions would be especially great for starters. hope this helps and all the best in your collection!!!
Dave,
You shouldn't have any regrets. You bought, you paid, you got, and are happy. Period. We all had good and bad deals. Probably you should follow this forum, not SMR.
Like Albie said, Tom got his cards very cheap but that's the history.
Ask Tom, how much he would want for his Clancy or Shore now...Everything is $$$$
Earl, even Ice Kings, look at the recent eBay sales
James,
Just out of drunk man curiosity - what are you studying?
Black humor? You have done nothing wrong - what are you apologizing for?
To tell you the honest truth, I never really took much interest in my education throughout my life and slacked off a lot during my high school years. Being 23 years of age (young I guess you could say), I realized what a big mistake I made but don't consider it too late to make-up for it. I am upgrading in college now(I did get my high school diploma, but got very low marks) and hopefully one day I'll be able to do something productive in life.
I'm not sure if James was being serious when he stated he is at Harvard Medical School. However, if he is, it certainly is impressive. Actually, I was rejected for admission to Harvard Medical School, but got in at Columbia University and Washington University (St Louis). I chose the latter school, met my wife, and now I am a physician, happily stuck in St Louis!
Was only joking about Harvard , folks. Earl, do you think it makes any sense to attend Harvard Medical School after performing poorly in high school? lol
I wrote above that I am currently in College - Seneca College. Not University.
