With some lots closed already and others into extended bidding, who got what? What was the big suprise? What went for higher than you thought and lower than you would have ever guessed?? I hate to say but my guess of $28,444 for the Orr wasn't to bad and my $30-40,000 for the PSA 10 Gretzky was pretty damn close as well. I thought the C55 lot would have gone higher, 1st on the PSA registry doesn't mean much I guess!!
well andrew the bidding is not over yet on the orr rc or gretzky rc but it looks like the gretzky has done better than the orr(who would have thought). we'll have to wait until the wee hours of the morning to find out. i have been pulling for the orr rc to do well since i have a hi grade vezina rc but the orr just hasn't shown a bidding war yet. signed greg
You never think of putting the Vezina up with a reserve to protect your investment, just to see what it sells for?! If not when do you plan on turning it around for a profit, any set time frame?
I am surprised the Action Comics #1 sold for $47,681. I know it's in low grade, but I mean it hasn't been restored or anything. Was thinking it was going to hit much higher than that. And the 1951 Bowman Mantle in SGC 96 is currently at $111,346 with a day to go. That's pretty high considering BMW sold a beautiful copy in the same grade (SGC 96) on eBay like 3 years back for $75,100. It just goes to show you what a great investment baseball cards are.
andrew the vezina to me is more than an investment. i want to enjoy it for a while. normally i hold a collectible for 5 to 10 years and try to sell it privately(although with the terms they give high end cards in auction i may try the auction route). with the vezina i may try 3 to 5 years but probably not. the action on the orr rc in the mastro auction does not bode well for high end hockey cards at this time. unless there is a bidding war in the final hours this card's action is a disappointment to me and the vezina cards price. signed greg
There's still time, but the Orr auction is definitely shaping up to be a major letdown. As for my own personal letdown, it's looking like I'll finish as the bridesmaid on the SGC C56 set.
Forgot about the difference between the extended period and the 30-minute rule - guess there's still hope.
I actually put in a decent initial bid on that set, Albie. My interest has grown since then and put in a bid earlier today to top the then-current max but I've since been topped by one increment. With the BP, I'm not sure if it's worth making another bid or not.
The Orr was won by the #2 guy on the PSA registry (he already has the card added to his set). I can only assume that the #1 guy did not bid on the card as he never ever loses on ANY Orr card that he bids on.
Steve / Albie,
We should touch base next time as there were a few cards from that set that I was very interested in, but just couldn't see getting the whole set for them.
jim the orr rc price was a major disappointment for guys like me in high grade hockey cards. even the gretzky 10 at 30k(with juice) was below my expectations. the only thing i can figure is there are a lot of 8's out there and the 9 was just not worth spending a tremendous amount of money on. i have to say though that if that's the only orr 9 in the future the card was a bargain. hey did you guys get your c56 set? i looked at it when i say the messages and i really liked the cards. signed greg
SO Joe from Minnesota won that PSA 9 Orr rc. And 40k plus the 20% bp for a total near 48k. It s lower than some of us were thinking at first but if you consider what you could get from that Mastro auction with 50k, you could obtain a lot of nice stuff.
For example, That 53-54 Parkie set went for 20k which i beleive is quite a deal. That s only 200$ per card and considering that a Richard psa 9 (only 1/2), Lumley psa 8 (only 1/5), Béliveau rc psa 7, and 77 other psa 8, i would have tought that this set could reach at least 25k-30k. You could also obtain a FULL set 66-67 topps with a Orr rc psa 8 included for 15k. You could also put 2 other full set, 67-68 and 68-69 topps included some psa 9 Orr (allstar and second year regular card) for another 7k. With those four set, you re at 42k. So there is still 6k to spend to get the 1910-1911 c56 full set. For me, if i had 50k to spend, i would have prefer the whole 5 set instead of the Orr rc psa9. And what about that Gretzky psa 10 Topps...At 30k (with bp), I beleive its a great auction for the seller but not as nice for the buyer.....
It would probably be most accurate to compare your vintage hockey holdings with auction lots from roughly the same time period. In the case of your C55 Vezina, a comparison could be made to other pre-war hockey in the auction such as the 1924/25 C144 Champ's Cigarettes Near Set, which ended at $60,746.40 (including the buyer's premium). After viewing this lot in person, I estimated the total retail value to be $27,800 versus a book value of $20,000 in EM.
For the 1951-52 Parkhurst Howe, a comparison might be made to the high-grade 1951-52 Parkhurst set which realized an astounding $43,167.60.
Several of the key cards in both sets were in lesser condition.
Book value is not anywhere close to the going rate for pre-war vintage hockey, especially in high grades. I priced the set at around $82,000. PSA 8's go for $3500-$5000 (even higher for HOFer's), PSA 7's for $2000-$3000, PSA 6's for $750-$1500 and so forth. There are 9 PSA 8's in the set x $4250/card (average of $3500-$5000) = $38,250. Anyone expecting this set to go close to book is not in-tune with the current market for pre-war vintage hockey. I'm glad for seller that it sold for this, but of course lamenting on missing out. My sentiments are the same for the #5 C57 set. Congratulations to the winners of these. Again, I would be interested in buying the Champ's that the winner is not keeping for him (or her) self.
