I want your idea about it : the top 10 of the greatest hockey cards between 1909 and 1989. If you have any cards in your top 10 feel free to share your scan
thx
I think that's a little hard to answer because people have personal preferences. I would love to have high grade rookie cards of all of the BIG rookie cards of the greats. Taylor, Lalonde, Ross, Vezina, Morenz, Orr, Howe, etc. There is too much out there since our sport has MANY superstars. I think there are many cards that we would all choose and there will be a few that we would differ on. The great thing is that even second or third year cards of some pre-war players are as in demand as their rookie cards. A perfect example would be the C57 Vezina vereus the C55 Vezina. I think the C57 would outsell the C55 if they were in the same grade.
This is also when rarity comes into play. I would love to have the Bert Corbeau because it's so expensive, but I would turn around and sell to obtain many high grade Superstars.
I can't give you my top ten list, but I would love to start with a high grade Vezina and Morenz.
Pat, you really got me thinking about what my top 10 would be, but there is so much out there that I just cannot put a list together.
Very interesting that you picked until 1989 as your end date. For me, extending it to the present would not offer any potential top 10, or even top 100 cards. Then again, my bent is pre-war vintage hockey. My list:
1910-11 C56 Newsy Lalonde
1911-12 C55 Georges Vezina
1912-13 C57 Georges Vezina
1924-25 Champ's Cigarette Howie Morenz
1951-52 Parkhurst Gordie Howe
1951-52 Parkhurst Maurice Richard
1954-55 Topps Gordie Howe
1958-59 Topps Bobby Hull
1966-67 Topps Bobby Orr
1979-80 OPC Wayne Gretzky
thx john for your top 10. Can you explain to me your first choice? why do you have placed C56 lalonde in first instead of the majority first choice c55 or 57 vezina.
thx
Pat, I'm sure John put them in order of years (not looking to hi-jack your post John), but I was wondering why you don't have Howie Morenz in your list? He was the biggest star of his era and I would see him and Vezina on everyone's list.
I supposed its a personal thing pointing out the greatest hockey cards, doesn't mean ten greatest stars, so I think these are my 3 greatest prewar cards to me and why I think so.
I did list the Champ's Cigarette Morenz. The Champ's Cigarette set has long been viewed as one of the toughest pre-war hockey sets to put together. There are several cards which I have never come across in any shape (almost 10 years of looking). I find it visually more appealing than the V145-1's. To me, that the V145-1's are a year earlier has no increased significance. I've seen about 3:1 ratio of V145-1 to Champ's Cigarette Morenz. The recent Mastro sell of the high-grade Champ's Cigarette set places it rightfully in the upper echelon of hockey and sportscards. The short answer is that I did place a Morenz on the list, just a different one than most people pick.
Pat, I didn't list the cards in any order other than chronologically.
Mr. Orlando should stick to every other sport except Hockey. I'm amazed that he didn't put a single pre-war card in his book. I bought the book for $3.00 online and I think I still got ripped off after going through it. Don't forget he updates his book every now and then, so when he learns about pre-war cards I'm sure he'll include them in his next edition. Looking at the SMR Hockey prices that they print should tell you their knowledge of Hockey card collecting. Thanks.
