Undergraded Gems?

If you read this forum I'm sure your also part of the phenomenon of "it was undergraded". We've all heard it and read it from sellers, eBay, shows, auctions...everywhere in our hobby its tossed around!

Just curious out there has anyone purchased something that was a 5 that "will regrade a 6" or anything like this that has ACTUALLY regraded HIGHER like the seller claimed?

Andrew

Andrew,

I have never bought a card from a seller on eBay or off eBay thinking that if I send it back to PSA to get regraded that it will come back higher. I always buy a card in the grade I want.

BUT - having said that - I have sent back some of my own cards to get regraded and sometimes they have come back higher. I sent down two PSA 6's and they both came back 7's. I knew they would as the card was NOT a PSA 6.

Thanks,
Paul

Re-grading

Ahhhhhh......the old inconsistency LOL! Just as I was saying in the SGC thread and was getting jumped all over by one member. Oh I see it was Paul? How can a card regrade a whole point higher??? There is only one answer....inconsistent. IMO

I've done it once. I bought a card from a friend, a PSA 7, and said to myself, " I have tons of 8's that don't look as nice" and sure enuf it came back an 8. More than likely though, I'm buying a KSA card, expecting it to be a grade lower.

Here is a card that I think should be an 9...

gorgeous, fresh Detroit Red

It "should" grade higher!

Andrew's original question wasn't just about regrading cards that we think should grade higher. It really had to deal with dealers who sell a card for a premium and tell you that it really should grade higher than the grade given by PSA.

I do know of at least one dealer who makes a habit of this. He submits a card, expecting a PSA 8, but gets a PSA 7. Then he sells the card and asks for close to the price of a PSA 8 and says, "The card is really an 8, but PSA made a mistake." So the question is, has anyone ever bought a card that the seller claimed should grade higher, and then actually resubmitted it and received a higher grade?

I agree with Paul, if I buy a PSA graded card, I leave it as it is. I have submitted SGC cards for crossover grading though.

I did submit a 1951 Parkhurst Stanley rookie to SGC a few years back and it came back SGC 70. I really thought that it looked more like a 7 to me. About a year later, I cracked it open and sent it to PSA--it came back a 7. Honestly, I believe that there is inconsistency with all grading companies. It's a subjective business and the number of cards being submitted is rising all the time.
I don't see the problem getting any better.

marketing b.s.

yes, I've heard that bs from dealers involving coins too....I say, "well get it regraded and I'll pay you a PSA 8 price for it, rather than trying to attach a premium to a PSA 7 card!"

Some dealers also have an enhanced view of their own grading talents.

So I've heard the line, but I have never bought a card from a dealer under this pretence.

The funniest thing is when sellers on eBay list cards like this: PSA 6, ExMt+ or PSA 6+
No matter how many times they use "+", a PSA 6 card won't become "PSA 6.5" or PSA 7

Elmer,

Unless you re-summit the card! Then its got a chance at a 7. LOL
