The hockey card that has always eluded me...

Hi guys

My first post on the hockey board. I've been a member of the net 54 baseball board since its infancy in 2001. I just found the hockey section recently though! I grew up collecting hockey in Edmonton Alberta, and was lucky enough to witness the Oilers glory years in the 80's. My uncle had seasons tix so I went to plenty a regular season and playoff game during the Gretzky/Messier/Coffey/Fuhr/Kurri (etc) days. It was awesome. While my collecting habits started out as mostly hockey related, I branched out in the late 90's into vintage baseball and eventually into pre-1920 baseball cards.

ANYWAYS that's enough about me. I wanted to post about the hockey card that has always eluded me: the 1925 Dominion Chocolates Vezina. I had an opportunity to buy a vg/ex version of this card in the late 90's WITH the coupon intact for $150, but that was alot of money for me to spend on a card at that time, and I passed. Needless to say I've always regretted that. I've been looking for this card on ebay for a while now and they never show up. But alas, one did recently and it seems a little overpriced to me:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=260143943926&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=016

$900 with the coupon trimmed off and a bunch of horizontal creases. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind low grade cards, but the price seems a little crazy. Or am I not up to speed with today's market? What do you think a reasonable offer for this card would be?

Glad to have found this place.

Ben

Dominion Chocolate

you may not like this answer, but they don't come up often enought so that prices can be gauged, so value is in the eye of the beholder.

Tough card as I have only ever seen a couple...this is one of my favorite sets too!

Ben, I don't know Glen Chaytor well, but I can vouch for Mark927 to be one of the nicest guys in the hobby. Glad to see you back in the hobby.

Thanks Elliot. Welcome Ben....I agree with Bobby - the Dominion stars just don't show up often enough to determine a 'fair' price. If you really are interested in the card try a counter offer. As an aside, I don't know Glen but have bought from him with no problems.

Dominion Chocolate Vezina

I've been active in vintage hockey for about 10 years. I've seen 3 Dominion Chocolate Vezina's (including Glen's) during this time. So, yes it definitely is fairly rare. It is difficult to gauge a fair price. By the same token, this is not the bus that leaves and the next one will come by shortly. When you are selling something like this, you don't want to think that you sold it for way underprice. So, you set an amount at which you could walk away and feel like you did well with minimal regrets. I agree with all of the comments about making a counteroffer and at least getting the dialogue started. Good luck.

collecting hockey in Edmonton Alberta

Hi Glen,

Welcome to the site! Do you still live in Edmonton as I also reside in Edmonton. Did not grow up here but settled here after College. Maybe our paths have crossed at some of the local shows?

Regards,

Rob

Thanks guys. Rob, I moved out of Edmonton in 1992, so it has been a while. There were many great card shops in the city at the time, most of which I'm sure have folded over the years. I remember my first "major" card purchase was at my favorite shop, a '81 OPC Jari Kurri RC for $30, and it was way O/C with a fuzzy cut. What a deal!

Regarding the Vezina, I'm considering making an offer, but given that my target price would be at about 50% of what he's asking, I'm fairly certain it would be rejected.

Elliot - thanks. It's good to be back. I'm on the outside looking in though, as I still have a while to go on my teaching contract out here in Seoul, Korea. I'm looking forward to making a pickup or two when I return. This forum looks like a nice little place to talk hockey cards, so I'll continue to visit and post from time to time!

Ben
