Selling my 71/72 opc nhl set perhaps........

Guys...I need your professional and serious opinion here.....as some of you know, I have been working and building
on a 71/72 opc nhl set with the goal of having the highest rated set....I own 17 PSA 10's from this set alone including
the Ken Dryden PSA 10 Rookie Card one of one...indeed, I have about 70 cards here that are one of one's and highest
rated...

Here is the url for the set....

http://www.psacard.com/set_registry/display_cards.chtml?rsetid=58530&alltime=no&rank=5&tied=0&requesttimeout=9999

I have I think 184 Graded cards...

I have been offered 32 000 US for these 184 cards...I was asking a little more...

My question to you guys is, should I sell....take into account I do not have a huge
sentimental attachment to these cards....

Let's look at it as a financial transaction....Should I hold onto them knowing that this set
is only going to go up...especially the PSA 10 Ken Dryden Card alone....Or do I look at this
and say to myself...Wow...this is a good deal for me?

I want some of your expertise here....

Thanks

Looks like a great deal to me. Take the money and run! With that money you can buy a PSA 9 Dryden and invest in pre-war hockey!

To keep or not to keep.

You certainly have a superb 71-72' OPC set.

Many of these cards you own would make nice additions to other sets.

Personally, I would continue to build it slowly because you have what it
takes to bring it to #1 by a large margin.
Moneywise, if you don't need the money right now, what's the purpose of
selling it? Tired on spending evenings in front of your screen bidding
on cards? Take a break for a while and see if the motivation that has
taken you to such a challenge is still there. I know more than a few
people who were collectors at a younger age, stop for years and
rediscovered the pleasures of the hobby!

Just my thoughts,

Gilles

71/72 OPC set

Devon,

It truly depends on why you're selling.

(1) If it's because you've lost the zeal for this set and especially if you are needing the money for other things (cards or otherwise), then sell now.

(2) If it's because you've hit a financial roadblock or difficulty in finding the remaining cards and upgrades, then please understand that the great thing about collecting is that you can just leave them alone for months or even years before returning to them.

Once you've decided to sell, the current offer you have on the table is the proverbial "one bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." I've been there before holding out for a higher offer, even to the point of being a little greedy. Sometimes it works, but sometimes you end up losing money. Remember that a lot of the people who can pay 5 digits for cards do not scour Ebay. They are more likely to deal with the big auction houses. Selling the 1st or 2nd or 3rd finest set brings in additional buyers and money. However, you lose a lot of autonomy in deciding the layout, payments accepted, descriptions, etc. Good luck regardless of your decision.

sell!!!!!!!!

devon,in my opinion i would sell-why? the biggest reason is that maybe a lot of your one of one cards will no longer be one of one cards in the near future. with the popularity of graded cards growing every day and more and more dealers submitting high grade cards maybe that dryden rc and your other psa 10's may have another psa 10 come up one day. if it happens it would probably make your 10's go down in value. i say take advantage of the situation now and cash in, i also get the feeling you lost your zest in completing this set so sell it while you have a lot of one of ones. you can always build a nice solid psa 8 set in the future if you want that year back and it will cost you a fraction of the price. just my 2 cents worth.

71-72 Set

Devon,

I agree with Dan. Sell if the price is fair and you have made a healthy return. IMO.

71-72 OPC Set

Devon,

I agree with one of the earlier comments--it depends on why you want to sell.

I was a comic book collector back in high school. Besides new comics, I had put together a nice collection of older comics too. Eventually I became low on money and started to lose interest. I sold my entire collection in a hurry and didn't get as much as I should have. I didn't really need the money, but I sold them anyway. Now I wish that I had kept them! Even if I didn't continue to collect, I was really fond of some of those comics!

But, if you need the money or feel like you are getting a great price that will make you happy, then go ahead and sell!

I feel that the value of those cards will continue to increase, so you have nothing to lose by keeping the cards. Also, it's OK to take a break from the hobby without selling your cards. If you still don't have the same desire to collect in a year, then selling is probably a good idea!

Good Luck!

Guys, It really isn't that I am lacking for the cash...or impatient in buidling this set as I have about 60 high grade cards waiting to be sent in for gradin and I need only 19 cards more to complete the set...

The person that is buying this set is obviously rich because they throw their money around on ebay like their is no tomorrow....

I do have the concern that down the road, their will be more high grades to match mine....though hopefully NEVER a PSA 10 Dryden....

PLEASE give me your honest estimation if I were to complete the set and it largely works out to PSA 9 overall (my goal) and THEN were to put it on the Auction houses!!

What do you think I could get for such a set?

Thanks

Well I dont ever post on here but felt I had to chime in having had the #1 set on the psa registry all time for 1971. Strictly from a money standpoint take the money and run. Thats alot of cash for 189 cards. When I sold my set it was complete and again keep in mind it was and still is #1 all time it sold for $14,000 with the juice if memory serves me correct. I am 19 cards away from completeing my second 71 set all psa with nm7 as a minimum and to be honest other then bragging rights I find my second set just as appealing as the first set only alot less costly.

I agree 100%!!! Sell the set and get the money! That is alot of money on the table and I woould take it in a heart-beat!

I also agree that the set is very nice in PSA 7 & 8 - very reasonable grades. I think PSA 9's and especially 10's are over rated and cost way too much.
