I was wondering if Bobby or anyone else had any new info on this issue. For cards that are "only" 35 years old, I gather that there is much more to learn about this series. Beckett and Charlton list this series as having 10 unnumbered cards (????). Bobby's book notes 51 numbered cards in the series, featuring several cards for each of 10 different players, plus a few prize cards. Just wondering, do we know anything more about this series now? Bobby's book lists many of the cards, but several numbered cards in the series are not listed in his book (2,3,10,15,18,etc), ?short prints.
Does anyone know more about the "missing" cards in the set, or how one participated in the contest for which cash prizes were awarded?
David, although nothing new has come to light on these, I can extend more information about what I know of the set. There is only so much you can write in the book.
The Breakaway contest was based on a combination of particular numbered cards and related cash prizes.
The short printed cards are just that, short printed due to lessen the larger prize $$ redemptions. Although we don't have the exact details, it would seem that picture cards that are missing are more than likely shortprints as I collaborated with a few other collectors to create the list but that is not to say that one or more cards documented on the list could be short prints that someone with some luck had found.
I had contacted Frito Lay way back and sure enough, they had no idea what I was talking about, like most of the other companies I have contacted, they just never saved promotional history documentation.
If we could one day find an empty bag, that would definately put the whole set in perspective!! One day....
