From my experience at past Expo's, larger dealers of PSA cards at the show are always quoting their prices in
$US. For example, if a card had a $100 sticker on it, they would say, "those are $US dollar prices" and it was usually $110 - $125,reflecting whatever the exchange was at the time. Well, this year I am wondering whether I will get a 5% - 7% discount from these same dealers when I pay with Canadian dollars. I'm sure most will feel they are doing us a favor by taking Canadian $$ at par.
Not a chance. The exchange rate is great now, and we Canadians are finally catching a break, but I'm sure dealers will be offering up some creative excuses for holding back savings to us.
I'm going to the Expo for the first time. Any dealers I should look for when trying to find older parkhurst and opc besides the usual suspects? I know the big guns will be there, so I'm not inquiring about Gerry's Sportscards or Platinum promotions.
If I was a u.s dealer and you came up to me and asked me if i would take 5 percent off a $10 dollar card I would rather rip it up and feed it to my dog this is why there is no shows in canada exepet for the expo pepole walk in and the first thing they say is WILL YOU TAKE $$$ FOR THIS?? NO NO NO!!! thats why the shows in the u.s.a are still around not as strong as befor but at least pepole respect the dealers asking price.. fine if your buying something for 100$ or 200$ you may ask for a few bucks off NOT 80 PERCENT OFF sorry if I come across rude.. its fine to make an offer just dont make an INSULT
Actually, 5% off of the $10 card would just be .50 off! If I was a dealer with a $10 card and someone offered me $9.50 for it, I would likely take it! I can't imagine destroying the card rather than take a .50 cut!
Personally, I like to haggle at shows, especially if I find a few cards that I want to buy from the same dealer. That is part of the fun of going to the show. Many dealers expect you to ask for a discount and they include that into their prices at shows. The dealer can always say "No" in a polite way. If I really want the card bad enough, I may not worry about getting a discount, unless the asking price is ridiculously high!
(Not to imply that any dealer would ask an outrageous price for their card!)
I respect the fact that sometimes a dealer has a certain amount he has to make on a card to see any profit, but most collectors have a limit on what they can spend!

Frank's response almost made me fall out of my chair laughing. Seriously though, I would listen to any sensible offer. I remember when the Canadian dollar was in bad shape many years ago and actually wish that both dollars would stay on an equal footing from now on.
What if I offered $5.00 for the card AND a 5lb. bag of Dog Food! Now that's a good deal!
Seriously, a 5lb. bag of dog food will keep that dog fed and healthy for a lot longer than that card! My dogs eat quite a bit, but thankfully they haven't ever eaten any of my cards! Maybe if I sprinkled it with some steak sauce they would...
