Yo, Larry:Out on the street you go to jail for what these guys did. McSorley didn't want to fight Donald Brashears so he attempted to decapitate him. Simon was right on the verge of receiving a lifetime suspension for his last caper and Bertuzzi will most likely be making financial payments to Moore for the rest of his life. You ought to be a big fan of the Wild, now, for sure. They can put Simon, Todd Fedoruk and Boogeard all on the ice. Those guys won't score many goals but will certainly maim a few skaters. Those who can play do, those who can't make it up as they go along.

They might have gone a little too far in their tactics. But action like that is what makes hockey exciting. They should change the rules to accomodate these types of players and alter a game a little, to make it more exciting..more in the style of the movie "Rollerball".
I guarantee attendance would jump dramatically, increasing team revenue.
I was a fan of McSorley in his younger days, but unfortunately he will forever be remembered by the mistake he made at the end of his career. That being said, I don't think the NHL needs to alter the rules to make the game of hockey more violent just for the sake of violence.
Too many people who don't really follow hockey still believe that it's a game played by goons who get paid to fight with some skating thrown in for good measure.
For hockey to remain a legitimate sport, it needs to concentrate on the speed and skill of the game. The goons will have their place in minor league hockey, but they are not the ones to represent the NHL on national television. A league that alters its rules to allow more violence and fighting will attract the same kind of people who love the "sport" of wrestling! The NHL has a proud history. I would hate to see the accomplishments of those great players forgotten so that we could "entertain" the people who would attend the games just to see the fights!

You may be right about the type of crowd it attracts and it would be bad for children to watch. But there could be a big difference between pro wrestling (which is fake) and a real NHL bloodsport. They could pay a hazardous duty premium to the players and reward tripping and hard checking that doesn't result in injury. If they result in injury or death, then the players could be sent to the penalty box or temporarily suspended without pay.
