Patrick Roy

Hockey doesn't get a lot of coverage on the news here in the U.S. but yesterday CNN showed the highlights of a minor league game. Of course the only reason to show minor league hockey is because of a fight.

But this wasn't your run of the mill fight between goons. The goons started the fight, and eventually the goalie wanted in on it. He skated the length of the ice and went after the other goalie. He literally beat the crap out of the other goalie, who seemed totally unprepared for a fight.

And the attacking goalie turns out to be the son of Patrick Roy! Playing on a team coached by Patrick Roy!

I don't know if this kid is really any good or not, but he doesn't seem to be following in his father's footsteps!

Patrick Roy....Instigator?

March 25 2008, 9:58 AM

TSN showed a clip showing Patrick what looks to be pointing for his son to go down ice and start this fight! That is why you see a relativily calm kid skating back to his own end then suddenly turning like he's on a mission and rushing to the other end. Like father like son! LOL.

"I don't know if this kid is really any good or not, but he doesn't seem to be following in his father's footsteps!"

Earl, c'mon, it sounds to me like he is making his Daddy proud.

Not sure that any other goalie fought MORE than him in recent memory. Or seemed to like to anyway.

I didn't see anything about Patrick actually telling his son to start the fight!

The video does show the kid skating off the ice and then turning around and taking off toward the other end, but he gets stopped by the ref immediately. The next shot shows him attacking the other goalie, who must be a complete pacifist, because he just takes a real beating!

I wonder how he got away from the refs, and why didn't they show that part?

Let us know what kind of punishment is dished out for this. I wonder if Patrick will be fined or suspended too?

Patrick Roy has denied encouraging the brawl.

LOL! Maybe Patrick did not start the initial fight/brawl. But he definately sent his son towards the other end of the ice!....or maybe his dog was across the ice in the stands and a rat was annoying him.

Clear as day on the TSN feed I seen as they even pronounced it with the typical white circle! His arm started by his side and then he empathically pointed towards the other end! It was like he was sicing his dog on some vermine. His son within 1/2 second got away from the ref and circled and made the bee-line. Made me sic to see this at the junior level! You would think it was an outtake from Slapshot!

I just saw the clips of this finally. I know that as a long-standing (and -suffering) Bruins fan that my objectivity regarding this guy will (and should) be questioned, but I have to say that despite his obvious accomplishments as a goaltender I've always been of the opinion that he has NO CLASS and here it is again. Nice that he has passed it on to his son. Both of them should have been tossed for a lot longer IMO. I hope we never see him back in the NHL in any capacity.

Al, I can't believe it's you...Longer suspension?

But personally I don't believe they (Roy and his son) regret and I don't believe "the last few days were painful" to Jonathan, not for a second, so Al, I agree with you on this.

Don't worry Elmar I'm not getting soft. While I enjoy a hard-hitting game and feel that pugilism is an unavoidable consequence of that and as such necessarily "part of the game", there is clearly a line that was crossed here. Plus Roy is such an arrogant SOB and it makes me sad when people like this reproduce.

Exactly Al,

We only see crossed lines where we want to see them. For instance, you didn't want to see it last year when another SOB Pronger could cause Holmstrom a serious injury by hitting from behind. Holmstrom was just much luckier than Steve Moore.

Although I am neither an advocate of hitting from behind nor a fan of Chris Pronger, I don't see where what happened in the Roy game deserves any kind of comparison to infractions, dirty or otherwise, that occur during the course of a game. The line between a clean and dirty hit is much less clear than between a hit (of any kind) and charging down the ice and beating someone up because your Daddy tells you to.

Like I said we all have different points of view and we draw lines to cross as we wish, and I don't care if something is comparable or not in someone's opinion...

What I do care is a probability for a player to get injured severely.

While we're on the subject, how about Marc Savard with a broken bone in his back courtesy of a crosscheck that wasn't called, which side of the line is that one on ? IMO the #1 problem in hockey today is the quality and consistency of officiating, not the temperament of the players. And I'm not just talking about the referees, whom one could argue can be forgiven for not knowing what the **** constitutes a penalty anymore.

For those of you who care about my opinion that is.

Well Al, like you said while back "not a lot of discussion here like some other boards but that's ok with you because you'd just end up fighting with me anyway."

I'm glad Roy took his head off. Would like to see more of that kind of action.
