Something for the pack guys

April 21 2008, 6:22 PM

Wow .. I was beginning to think that pack collecting was a taboo subject in this forum. Having jumped back into the collecting hobby after a few years away I continue to enjoy the thrill of finding a new opened pack to savour. It really brings me back to being a child and walking to the store in the early 70's with my quarter to buy 2-3 packs and eagerly rip them open to find the treasures waiting for me. Pack collecting doesn't seem to be a big hit in this forum so I enjoy my niche quietly from a distance, ready to read every clue about a new pack that has hit an auction or e-bay.

Just an observation but it appears to me that vintage hockey packs are even more rare than most sets ... I can count on one hand the vintage packs that have come available lately. Yet the interest seems non existent... curious.

I would walk through glass just to hold a 1966 Topps Hockey wax pack thinking that an Orr rookie could be moments away ...

Definetly not a taboo subject, there are many collectors that visit the forum that own some great packs and maybe someone can start a thread with some scans again. I thought I would post this one because you don't see cello's very often. Jim.

Thank you for this picture I can now die a happy man... I have seen the promised land ... I've heard of places like this but I thought it was all made up in fairy tales ... I have taken the liberty of photo copying this picture and posting it on top of my packs ...

You should charge admission just to view this shrine ...

These are not real ones, I made this up so I could display this without the worry of fading...but they do look nice.

Pack Collection

April 21 2008, 9:28 PM

Wow--I'm absolutely speechless!

When I saw this pic I actually gasped--I was completely shocked by what I was seeing. Then I had to explain to my wife what I was looking at that brought on that kind of reaction. Once I started talking about hockey cards, she just shook her head...

That's a beautiful collection, Bobby.
Thanks for sharing!

it would be a real pleasure to open all the 1964 tall boy packs to see if there was really a first and second series printing.
could you imagine opening a tall boy pack and seeing low and high numbers mixed together.that would shure change the history of that set.

has anyone ever opened a 1964 tall boy pack?

please let me know?

Bobby,it has bean a lot of fun opening packs with you in your kitchen.you have gotten a lot of fantastic packs and full boxes over the years! always more surprises coming up in the future!

It's sure nice to see these old treasures displayed. My heart jumped when I saw, what looked to be an box on unopened 1964 Topps, as well...Bobby, you have some older packs displayed as well there?

Wow.That picture makes my collection of 70's and 80's wax packs look like childs play.I feel
like throwing them all away now!!!I am guessing the value in that picture to be that of a small house???I am blown away.
How would you find any of that stuff today?
Any idea?

Wax Packs

Just curious as to why you didn't get the packs graded ? Just preference ? I would also love to hear how you put the collection together if you ever would consider writing about it, it would make an interesting read for a lot of us ... time frame, prices, locations, etc

Also can I call you dad ?

I can't speak for Bobby, but I think he said those packs are just for display, and aren't necessarily unopened packs

Collector's passion

April 24 2008, 9:30 AM

I also was salivating at Bobby's display even after he explained that it was only a display and not a hoard of unopened packs!

It just goes to show the passion of some collector's who can get caught up in the dream of it all. Kind of like the prices people pay for some of "capsports2000" run of the mill items.

OPC or Topps? Congrats!! Great pull. How many total 79-80 did you open that day?

Congrats....

Thats a nice looking Gretzky. It looks pretty well centered. You must have been thrilled
pulling that from a pack.

If you have time, I'm sure many would like to see a larger scan of the card, as well as the origins of the pack. Was it from a full box? Was in in a GAI or PSA slab?

Andrew. It is OPC as the wrapper has the 20cent and 4g markings on it.

Have a great day...

Rob...
