How about some predictions for the Cup. Playoffs have been excellent and some teams are pretty dominant.
Even though they are young, I'm liking the Penguins.

Stars are not my team but the way they played so far they are the best IMHO...
Pens are young but East is horrible...
Still want Wings to win it all

Red Wings

I'm a Wings fan, so I still like them this year.

I keep hoping to see the Wings in the Finals with another Original 6 team, but it hasn't happened since I've been watching!

The only team from the East that they could face is the Rangers, but they are struggling in the 2nd round!

As long as the Wings win the Cup, I'm happy!

Stanley Cup Predictions

I will make a bold prediction and say that the Rangers will do as they did last year and win games 3 and 4 but instead of blowing game 5 with 7 seconds left they will beat the Penguins and use the momentum to win the Cup over Dallas. CN

I'd like to see Montreal win it, but I really think it's still anyone's year.

Pens 7-0 in playoffs so far. I see a hell of a future for this team. Hopefully the youngsters on the Blackhawks can do the same thing for us here soon.

i say penquins all the way! it will be nice to see a young team turn into a dynasty to win many more cups down the road. i hate one off cup winners like tampa bay, anahiem and carolina. i rather see a dynasty develope like the good old days of the oilers, habs, penquins, red wings, devils etc...

as for leaf fans like myself,it is only a dream. maybe when i am 6 feet under.LOL

Dan,

It's not going to happen and I might add ever...

Forget about times when Plante, Harvey, Richard, Beliveau, and Geoffrion played in the same team. I mentioned them because they were superstars. All other players in that team were just stars...

Forget about times when someone could pick Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Anderson, Coffey, and Fuhr in 2 short years...

Forget about times when Mr. Bill Torrey could at his leisure create a team in 1972 and get Bill Harris, then get Potvin in 73, Gillies in 74, Trottier in 75, Bossy in 77, trade Harris for Goring and easily win 4 Cups in row...

This will never ever happen again. 30 teams in the league, 750 players, lot of them with no talent (I think if I could make a line of attackers with Paul and Al, have you and Bobby in defense, put Jim in goal, we could beat most of them...LOL).

Sorry, but you will see 8 Carolinas and Tampas in every upcoming decade. Thanks to the league expansion and Mr. Betman’s salary cup. Fleury, Whitney, Malkin, Crosby, Hossa are great…but wait until each of them wants to make $6M or more. Who will be able to keep them together?

Dynasty Teams

May 1 2008, 11:54 PM

I agree with Donald--it would be great to see a team of superstars who develop together and win multiple cups!

I also hate seeing teams like Tampa Bay and Carolina who have a good run and win the cup, then become mediocre the following season.

Unfortunately, Elmar makes a few good points. The Penguins really do look like a Dynasty Team in the making, but there are so many young stars on that team who all could become superstars. The money will break up that team! Teams will line up with stacks of cash to steal away half of that team as soon as they become available!

Thanks for bursting our bubble, Elmar!

By the way--is anybody else watching Detroit absolutely DESTROY the Avalanche? The 3rd Period is about to begin and the Wings are leading 7-1!

Red Wings, baby!

May 20 2008, 5:24 PM

I've been picking the Wings to win it this season and I won't change that now!

This should be an exciting series! Both of these teams have great offensive power and there should be plenty for the highlight reel each night!

I'm not surprised to see the Pens in the finals. They really have put together an impressive team with some big names. This series should be good for the NHL overall. These are actually teams with fans from all over, not just people located in their backyard.

I'm glad that neither of these teams are just mediocre with a great goalie! (Like we have seen in the past.)

Go Wings!

Stanley Cup Predictions

May 23 2008, 9:14 AM

Yo, Elmar:I've going to have to mildly disagree with you. Yes, the Canadiens were great in their time. I was reading the Detroit News Red Wings Forum last week and one of the posters in there was making remarks about how small Brian Rafalski and Brett Lebda were for the Wings. He compared them to Bobby Baun and Leo Boivin and made the comment that Baun and Boivin were much bigger. Well, I just happened to have a Parkhurst card right in front of me with Bobby Baun's stats on them. This monster was 5'9" tall and weighed 185 pounds and, although I don't have Boivin's stats handy I would imagine that he was probably not any bigger. Both Rafalski and Lebda are about the same height and slightly heavier. So many of us get enthralled with the good old days that we often leave reality behind. Back in the "good old days" the seasons were shorter and the players had to have off-season jobs to pay the bills. Now, the season is quite a bit longer, the Playoffs are a lot longer and with world tournaments it's just about a year long commitment to stay competitive. This competitiveness has required players to work out all year long. The result is that the players are bigger and faster. You talk about the talent being spread out over 30 teams now. But, back in the "good old days" even though that talent was only spread over six teams, it was almost entirely Canadian. Now, hockey is booming in the U.S. and do the names Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Hossa, Alfredsson, Malkin and Lidstrom strike a bell. The European talent is the NHL can't be sneezed at. Take a look at the names enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame. There are many great players there. But I believe that an awful lot of good players are also there who may have been admitted too easily. This shrine is supposed to be for the elite and many are not. GO WINGS!

Ted, I really didn't understand what you were disagreeing with me about
and I didn't see any contradictions to what I said.

All I said is in the past every single player was a star, even 4th liners.
These days players in 3rd or 4th line are mediocre or even poor skaters
and it's very hard to make a dynasty team.

Toronto has won 14 cups- 3 cups you are missing- the St. Pats (1921-22), Toronto Arenas (1917-18), and the Toronto Blueshirts (1913-14).

Hey Joe, you just got lucky - should have been in 5 (or even in 4 considering shots ratio) LOL

Anyway one year ago someone from this forum told me that Detroit has too many Europeans on it's roster and that's exactly why they will never win the Stanley Cup.
