Vlamir Konstantinov

Hey guys:This really doesn't have anything to do with vintage stuff but I'm just too happy about it not to share it with you. Check out E-bay item #310056524954. I know Earl will remember the fatal day after the Wings won the Stanley Cup in '97. Wanting to be able to celebrate without having to worry about operating a vehicle while driving impaired, Slava Fetisov, Vladimir Konstantinov and Sergei Mnatsokonov, who was the Wings masseur at the time, hired a limo to drive them around. Unfortunately the limo driver was impaired and a terrible accident resulted in permanent crippling injuries to Konstantinov and Mnatsokonov. I am convinced that had this accident never occurred that Nick Lidstrom's best competition for all the Norris Trophies he has won would have come from Vladimir Konstantinov. Anyway, after the accident many wonderful things happened to help Vlady and Sergei and their families. Steve Yzerman personally donated $1,000,000 and benefits were held all over Michigan and throughout North America. One of these benefits was a golf tournament at the Bay Harbor Golf Club in Harbor Springs, Michigan. The statue described in this E-bay listing is from that golf tournament. The mail lady just delivered it to me and I am amazed that I got it. The picture just doesn't do justice to it. I don't know if people didn't realize how big it was or were put off by it's size. I am proud to add it to my hockey memorabilia. It will have a place of distinction. GO WINGS! Cup #12 in 2009!

Konstantinov

Ted,

I sure do remember that terrible crash. It was very reminiscent of Ace Bailey, and I was very impressed with the way the Wings stepped up and took care of their teammates!

That's a great pick up, especially considering that it came from the Konstantinov benefit! In addition, Osgood just led the Wings to another Cup! What a great coincidence!

Thanks for sharing that with us Ted!

Sometimes it's hard to figure out why things like that happen or if they were meant to happen. Maybe they were sinners?

sinners? Ace Bailey?

One was an accident caused by a drunk driver, the other died in the 9/11 attacks by terrorists? They are not connected.

WTF are you other guys going on about? I Know I like to be sarcastic at times....

Bad things happen to good people...bad things also happen to bad people.

There is no grand plan.

Things just happen.

The egocentric person lives with a certain level of unconsciousness.

Weakening the ego will lift the veil of unconciousness, bring back the state of consciousness and see the positive aspects of life.

I also feel that Larry is a very unhappy person. His unhappyness is related to the
various filters his ego has built along with his experiences of life. These filters
amplify the negatives and diminish the positives.

The good news is it's fairly easy to change our way of thinking. Some reading and some personal
efforts will make it!

Gilles, where do I lay on the couch....

I think we all have some issues, considering we pay so much money for things made of ink on cardboard.

Common sense is not always so common.

"we pay so much money for things made of ink on cardboard"

Bobby, I'd rephrase it this way: "For things made of ink on cardboard we pay with so much paper with ink on it".

Common sense is not to speak badly about dead people (or who require full-time nursing, can't speak or walk) regardless of what kind of people they were.

Vladimir Konstantinov

Yo, guys:I've been a die hard Red Wing's fan since the early 60's so I'm no band-wagon fan. I've never heard a bad word about Vlady even before he was injured. He was a warrior on the ice and I have no doubt that he would have been a Hall of Fame defenseman. He wasn't that big but his heart was. When the Wings swept the Flyers in '97 they were supposed to be dominated by the Legion of Doom. Vlady put some hits on the Flyer forwards that had them keeping their heads up that whole series. I don't know why anyone would make the kind of negative comment that Larry made. You should be ashamed to make a statement like that Larry.

Ace Bailey

June 17 2008, 1:38 PM

Dan,

I'm confused--Which hockey player was killed in the 9/11 Terrorist Attack?

What I meant by the comparison between Ace Bailey and Konstantinov was that both were cut down in their prime and many players around the league did charitable work to raise money for each of them. It wasn't a perfect comparison, I realize.

I would comment on Larry's post, but a number of other people have already taken care of that. I can't really understand Larry, but I'm beginning to think that he make controversial posts just to get a reaction. Totally lame!

Earl

Garnet " ACE " Bailey

This is the ACE Bailey that was killed on 9/11. He was on flight 175 that crashed into the World Trade Centre.
He was 53 years old.

don't forget the little fact that it was a terrorist strike and they flew that plane into the building.....I believe Ace was part of the 1970 Stanley Cup winner Bruins team.
