How to make cash on slabbed recent sheet cut cards

Well this is just a observation.

I search Ebay for graded hockey cards in high grade all the time. I have seen some cards from a seller who is selling just one year of cards with super high grades. Example 197* OPC in a 9 graded condition. Yet when you look at there feedback you see that they only have one year of graded cards for sale.

These cards are not showing the typical ragged cut and are centered near perfect. No off centered cards, No duplicate numbered cards for sale. No tilted cut cards for sale. All of the cards for sale are graded by one company. When I first seen the sellers cards for sale. I thought WOW this guy must have gone thru 100's of cards to get the few cards for sale so far. Now that I have seen around a 100 cards graded 9. I'm getting the feeling that these maybe sheet cut cards graded. I sure hope they are not because this grading company guarantees they will not grade sheet cut cards. I would think if these were opened from wax there would be some duplicates or even if they were from a vending box I would expect to see some duplicates. But so far all I have seen is one of each card so far.

Anyone else see it the way I do?

Sounds very likely. Considering how flakey cards were cut in the 70's.

If its SGC or BVG they're pretty open to you calling and talking to them about such concerns. I don't have a repoire with anyone at PSA but they seem a little tougher to talk about that sort of thing.

PSA DOES NOT grade sheet cut cards ........

thats why sellers go the BVG route!!

PSA does not "knowingly" grade sheet cut cards. There is a big seller that has been selling PSA sheet cut cards. At one point the seller had some 68 OPCs. We were able to match a stain from one card to the next. The same two cards are right next to each other on the sheet. I think I have a photo somewhere.

Paul and I may be speaking of a different seller but I know of many 68, 69, 70, 71 and 72 OPCs that are now out there. I bought quite a few and you can tell the difference.

Rumor has it the Perreault PSA 10 that just sold for nearly 3k was from a sheet as well.

Who are the sellers on Ebay that you suspect are selling sheet cut PSA cards?

Only wheatlandviking fits the description. He's been selling psa 9 1974-75 OPC cards for the last month or so. Those 70's opc sets are so tough to find centered and pack fresh- I just assumed he was liquidating a registry set. If you buy a new-to-market high grade raw set, you'd be lucky if 20 of 400 would be psa 9 type centering.

Now there are TEN 10's on Ebay Again no dupes

Here we go again with maybe sheet cut cards. I would love to figure out a way to prove these are sheet cut cards. Ten 197* OPC cards up for auction now. Anyone feel there is a way to prove if these are sheet cut or not?
Thanks,
Paul

all i can say is --- once there slabbed by psa or any other company, the buyer is really on there own when purchasing these sheet cut cards. if you think about it,why should the seller be to blame? if the graded card companys do not do there job right then there is a big problem in this hobby of graded cards. look what happened to graded wax packs by gai,no one trusts those anymore as to many packs where found to be re-sealed in those graded holders.

its a shame that along with beckett grading that psa grading is also slabbing these sheet cut cards and letting them slip buy.

SGC grading rules!!!!!!!!!!!
RAW cards rule more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sheet Cuts

1974 OPC sheets are pretty prevalant if that is the year you are concerned about. Looking at some of the 10's for sale on ebay now, most of them were submitted at different times based on the cert #'s and while some definately look like they are sheet cuts some have slightly rough edges.

I believe PSA tries not to grade sheet cut cards. Based on my early experience with BGS crossovers they were pretty good at detecting sheet cut cards. That might have changed recently.

As an aside, no question BGS is the preferred grader of choice for sheet cut cards. As an example PSA has graded 5 GEM MINT Mark Messier rookies out of 848 cards graded. BGS has graded 52 GEM MINT or better Mark Messier rookies out of 544 graded. BGS really really hurt the modern market with the grading of sheet cut cards.

auction about 2004

July 15 2008, 9:34 PM

back a few years ago, I think it was Topps or OPC were clearing out a whole bunch of uncut sheets....I only recall the 1966 -69 sheets, but there were multiple copies of EACH year.....they sold off in lots (huge $$$$), and sure enuf, these perfect cards start showing up on ebay.....when each border is perfectly smooth, and centered, and the seller has 20 PSA 9's and PSA 10;s for sale....it defies common sense that these were cut back in the 60's....

this issue was re-hashed many times on the PSA boards a few years back....PSA has mistakenly graded many, but of course, since they don't make mistakes, they have never acknowledged the fact....

Further on this subject....if you see a dealer offering a whole bunch of suspicious cards, note the PSA cert number and do a search for cards that are in the same series run. Often you will see the odd card, noted as "trimmed" by PSA, and not graded....It's been a few years since I've seen these auctions in 69 OPC, so this may not be much help for other years.

note the 'perfect' borders and centering....
