Beckett Hockey Monthly R.I.P.

I guess this shows how out of touch I am with modern card collecting. It's hard to find a Hockey Beckett in any stores where I live. I happened to be out of town the other day and went to a large book store. I decided to look for a hockey Beckett since I haven't bought one in months. I found the Beckett Hockey Plus magazine, but not the monthly magazine. Then I saw something I didn't recognize--a Beckett monthly magazine that covered all 4 sports. I thumbed through it and saw that it was basically a total waste of paper! It only covered the last couple of years for each sport, so it was like a small version of Tuff Stuff.

This looks like a lose/lose for all collectors. Unless you collect multiple sports, you won't be happy with this 4 sport magazine, since most of the pages won't interest you. The Hockey Plus magazine is OK, but it only comes out every 2-3 months!

So what does everyone think about this? I don't read the Beckett very often, but I do enjoy some of the articles. (Not as many as it used to be.) Even though it wasn't a great magazine, at least it was about hockey cards!

Does anyone else have an opinion about this?

hey earl,interesting subject.

i agree that the multi sport issue is garbage for vintage hockey collectors but the beckett hockey card plus guide is the one to buy for hockey collectors.it comes out every two months and is the best guide for keeping up with the vintage card values from 1910 to 1989.it also has its traditional up and down arrows that the defuct monthly used to have.
i buy one maybe once or twice a year just to have a guide that i can use as a guide line when i do a lot of my buying. i also by the yearly hockey beckett that carries all the cards and many of the premuims.this year i did not buy the 17th yearly edition beckett when i found out they forgot to print most of the o-pee-chee issues but i will buy the 2009 18th issue if it has no screw ups.

Note: my comments and opinions are towards raw card views as i do not follow the graded card prices.

This is not really about Beckett but does anyone know what happend to the "Charlton Standard Catalouge - Hockey Cards"??

The last one that came out (2 years ago I think) was Volume 16 and it had a Patrick Roy Goalie Mask on the cover and then no more issues - so far.

I really liked the Carlton Guide as it covered so much and not just cards but Food Issues and more!!

It looks like they went bankrupt or something.

Any info would be great.

Thanks,
Paul

Beckett - Charlton

Looks like the internet has taken its toll with these mags. I stopped writing for both for many different reasons and I think these publications are too wide spread, there is a fine line between vintage collectors and modern collectors, few which cross over.

Baron Bedesky is no longer with CSM/Charlton, so I don't anticipate them ever doing another. Becketts last year as Donald said was as major screw up, I bought one and they wouldn't take them back and offered a free download of the missing pages, 52 pages!!

I Like the CSC alot better than beckett. Stories are better. For those Yanks who dont know about it here is the link. http://www.sportscollector.ca/

Hopefully Bobby will decide to start a bi-monthly mag someday.

That's too bad. I'm not suprised with the internet replacing the print magazines. At least I got to be featured a few years ago in a "Super collector of the month" article regarding my low end collection of Jewish hockey players.
