ebay.com now only one payment

thought i would give everyone the heads up about ebay.com now only takes paypal as there only payment option.

today i noticed that there was only one payment option on the USA ebay when doing my bobby orr search from sellers.

ebay.ca still has more options but will probably change soon too.

what do you guys think of this?

is it better or worse for everyone?

IMO i think it protects buyers even more and gets payments faster for sellers. BUT,it seems that ebay just has to figure ways to keep making money off of sellers with a standard of insertion fees/sellers % fee/paypal fees and if your canadian and transfer your money over to your canadian bank account which becomes canadian dollars, paypal gives you one of the worst exchange rates [linked image]

Paypal

I have only been a buyer on eBay. As such, I have mixed feelings about this change. I really like the convenience of paying via PayPal. However, I have to admit that items sold by buyers who didn't accept PayPal would generally sell for less, as some buyers avoided these sellers.

Ebay

Hi,

I also like the convenience of paying with paypal, but hate it as a seller. The thing with Paypal is that it protects the buyer but does nothing for the seller! Fees are exorbinant as it is and I am finding it harder and harder to bring myself to list anything on ebay as it is. This is just another minus for small time sellers! Very disappointing news IMO and not sure if this is a good stategy by ebay. I guess time will tell! They will probably have to raise fees higher to regain the revenue lost from people not listing items based on their policies!

IMO

PayPal

Wow, I can't believe that eBay is forcing us to use PayPal! I like PayPal for the convenience of it, but the fees really are too high!

Originally, PayPal was a private company that eBay accepted as a payment method. It made sense that they charged a fee for their service, but now eBay owns PayPal, so it doesn't make sense for them to charge a fee. Now that eBay is requiring PayPal for most purchases, they are actually charging 3 fees! A listing fee, a final value fee, and a PayPal fee. eBay is just taking advantage of us!

I love eBay and I wouldn't have many of my cards without eBay, but these fees are just getting crazy!

An exhaustive list of bloodsuckers...

Yep, here is an exhaustive list of costs and fees for
a $500 card bought on EBay from a medium volume US
seller to a canadian buyer (auction style format):

EBay Insertion fee $4.00
EBay Final Value fee $19.00
EBay various Upgrade and Picture fees $1.00

Paypal Payment fee $13.00
Paypal Currency Exchange fee $13.00

Packaging cost $3.00
Postal cost $2.00
Insurance cost $7.00

Canadian Customs taxes $50.00

Buying a $500 card could cost up to $112 in various fees for
the buyer and seller.

SICK!

fees and more fees

looks like ebay is using the airline's pricing models.....they had a good thing going, but now it looks like they are taking things a bit too far.

perhaps in the future, they will start withholding a portion of the final selling price to remit to the gov't directly? I'm just saying.....

Some advice needed here.

January 18 2009, 12:48 PM

I just recently sold a few cards over on EBay and was surprised
by a transaction which I need to claim by Accept the payment.

My Paypal Personal account shows I'm still well under the $500usd
monthly receiving limit and the remaining limit for Debit or Credit
Card is at 5 transaction.

I have a personal account and do not intend to sell more than 20
card per year. From the info I have on my Paypal account, I am
well below the two limits requiring to upgrade to a Premium/Business
account.

I wanted to know if by accepting the payment it would automatically
upgrade my account?

Why Paypal is forcing me to upgrade account if it shows I'm under those
limits?

I got a reply from a Paypal representative, 4 days after I sent a message
asking for their explanations, and from what he said it seems I need to
upgrade after only 1 credit card funded payment?? The rest of the reply
was a bit nasty:

If you accept PayPal as a payment method, you must accept all types
of payments. If you offer PayPal as a payment option on eBay, but do
not upgrade your account to accept a credit card payment, you run the
risk of a buyer reporting you as a Non-Selling Seller, and that will
result to:

-- Listing cancellation
-- Forfeiture of eBay fees on cancelled listing
-- Limits on account privileges
-- Loss of PowerSeller status
-- Account suspension

Refusal to accept a payment after the auction has ended falls under
eBay's Seller Non-Performance policy which can be found at
http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/seller-non-performance.html.

Sellers who offer PayPal as a payment option in their eBay listings
(either through logos or through text in the item description) must
accept card funded payments. Sellers must have a Premier or Business
PayPal account or be willing to upgrade from a Personal PayPal account
to a Premier or Business account upon receipt of a card funded payment.

Sellers may not communicate to buyers that they only accept account
balance or bank account funded payments, or will not accept card funded
payments.

Violations of this policy may result in a range of actions, including:

* Listing cancellation
* Forfeiture of eBay fees on cancelled listings
* Limits on account privileges
* Loss of PowerSeller status
* Account suspension

I hate to act under the menace....

Saw this coming...

I remember the good old days of eBay in the late 90's. You could contact anyone you wanted on eBay and many deals took place "under the table." You could send checks, money orders, I even received cash a few times. At least it was my choice!

I realize that eBay is here to make money, so I understood when they took away the option of contacting other bidders and other members. But the fee situation has been increasing rapidly over the years. PayPal has become the WalMart of payment options. They started off small and many people grew to love them, but now they have a monopoly going and we don't have any other choice but to use them.

I agree with Rob--I love eBay and without it I wouldn't have most of the cards that I have now. But it seems like they are taking their customers for granted. The listing fees, the final value fees, the PayPal fees! There really isn't a reason for PayPal to have a separate name for eBay purchases. It really is part of eBay, and that service should be part of using eBay without another fee!

I'm starting not to list things on eBay as much as I used to. You have to be sure that you can make some money on your item, or you will just lose money to all of the fees you have to pay. If I'm not sure if something will even sell, I don't list it since I don't want to pay a listing fee for nothing. Another thing that gets to me is the Reserve Price fee. Many times it just isn't worth listing some items anymore.

I don't know if eBay will ever decide that they have gone too far with this abundance of fees or not. If enough people do stay and utilize eBay, then the extra fees will make up for the losses from the people who decide not to sell there. I'm hoping that eventually eBay will get rid of the PayPal fee, since they are forcing us to utilize their services. eBay has changed a great deal over the years, so I'm hoping that there will be changes that will actually benefit the users and not just the company!

As per your question about having to upgrade your PayPal account, I would call them and address your question to a live person. From my experience, PayPal is very easy to deal with on the phone. The customer service reps I have dealt with were friendly and able to answer my question correctly.

I really appreciate good customer service, so I remember when I receive it. I have contacted PayPal by telephone a few times and I have always had my problem resolved.

Talk to a real person and explain your situation. They might be able to explain how you can keep your personal account and still do what you need to do on eBay. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of the personal account eventually so that they can charge more fees!

Re: ebay.com now only one payment

January 20 2009, 7:50 AM

Good day Earl,

As per your suggestion, I have called Paypal yesterday and talked to a representative.

The person was kind to listen my side of the story.

I just told her I wanted to know how many payments I have received that
was paid by a credit/debit card. She never gave the answer even if she
had the information on her computer screen.

I then told her I made a total of 5 sales on Ebay so I could not
have gone over the 5 cards payments described in the Paypal Term
of Service.

I then told her that linking the claim of a buyer's payment with the
upgrade from a Personal account to a Premium account was deceiving.

But the interesting (and rotten) thing here is the following:

Paypal limits do not apply to EBAY transactions!!!

I ended up telling her these treacherous business processes gave me
bad feelings about doing business with paypal. In reality, I was
quite pi$$ed off, but what's the use? Paypal has the monopoly on
EBay.

Just gobble the pill...
